Breaking act: Mumford & sons

Who are they? A four-piece led by the singer/guitarist Marcus Mumford, M&S are part of the burgeoning London acoustica scene that also includes Noah and the Whale and Laura Marling, for whom Mumford often drums on tour. M&S make ghostly, haunting folk music, whose grainy purity never tips over into stifling heritage archiving, but instead communicates with a catch in its throat and an ambushing insidiousness. Fiddle, banjo and accordion beguile in a brush-stroking sort of way, and, just as you’re thinking how jolly soothing it all is, the band’s debut EP, Lend Me Your Eyes, shifts gear and sends shivers up your spine. Magical stuff.
