The Red Shoes (1948)

One of the most beloved films from the legendary writer-producer-director duo Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, The Red Shoes stars Moira Shearer as a ballerina torn between dancing and love.

Once neglected, this magical masterwork was critically rediscovered decades after release, partly thanks to endorsements by both Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. (133min)

Mystery Men (1999)

Ben Stiller dons the special underpants in this lively comedy about a gang of neurotic, second-division superheroes. Despite a patchy plot, there is some fine semi-improvised dialogue and an excellent ensemble cast including William H. Macy, Geoffrey Rush, Greg Kinnear and Eddie Izzard. (121min)

Derailed (2005)

Clive Owen and Jennifer Aniston star in this implausible thriller as adulterous Chicago commuters who are attacked and blackmailed by Vincent Cassel’s Euro-psycho, but dare not go to the police for fear of exposure. It’s all rather silly, but enjoyably so in parts, especially during Cassel’s comically overblown scenes. (107min)

Jackass: The Movie (2002)

The debut feature-length spin-off from MTV’s stunts-and-slapstick show is horribly compelling stuff, depending on your tolerance for watching grown men eat frozen urine or swim with killer sharks while smeared in seafood. Johnny Knoxville leads the cast of drunken daredevils and street-corner exhibitionists. (87min)

Quatermass and the Pit (1967)

Originally introduced to British audiences on live television in 1953, the writer Nigel Kneale’s rogue scientist Quatermass was a clear prototype for Doctor Who. Made by the classic British horror stable Hammer, Quatermass and the Pit is the best-loved and scariest of the three spin-off feature films from the TV series. Andrew Keir’s title character is summoned to investigate an alien spaceship buried for centuries under a Tube station. (97min)

Knocked Up (2007)

The hugely successful producer-director Judd Apatow’s biggest hit to date, Knocked Up stars Seth Rogen as an easygoing slacker and Katherine Heigl as the ambitious TV executive he impregnates during a drunken one-night stand. Mixing lowbrow laughs with syrupy observations on the joys of parenthood, this likeable male fantasy is essentially Woody Allen-lite, but with bawdy sex scenes instead of Ingmar Bergman homages. (129min)
