Pick up classic Hitchcock thrillers all this week, only in The Times
Channels have been the mainstay of viewing ever since television was invented. However, the widespread introduction of fibre optic could mark the end of BBC One and the 400-plus counterparts available on satellite - because it becomes possible for viewers, at a single click, to watch any programme on high definition, suitable for viewing on a large screen.
Already, the choice that is offered by the BBC iPlayer gives a taste of what is to come, although the tiny made-for-laptop picture size and reliablity of connection can make iPlayer frustrating to use.
The advance, though, may cost consumers extra.
Ian Livingston, BT's chief executive, said that to guarantee quality of service - an unbroken picture - could mean an extra few pounds a month on the internet bill. Many people who want to select BBC programmes only might balk at paying extra. After all, BBC programmes have already been paid for by the nation's licence-fee payers.

In the long run high speed internet is undoubtedly going to take over. However, as Keynes pointed out, in the long run we are all dead. Don't hold your breath for High Definition movies from BT to arrive tomorrow. Building reliable fiber optic connections countrywide will take several years.
