There is a delightful aroma of stake-building wafting from Coffeeheaven International, the Eastern European coffee shop chain.
It rose 5p to 42¼p amid strong volume driven by talk of bid interest. It is thought that a 55p price would seal a deal from the right predator. Starbucks and Whitbread, which owns Costa and is trying to expand in Poland, have been cited as likely contenders, but both use franchisees while Coffeeheaven manages its own shops. Gerry Ford, the Caffè Nero owner, is thought to be a more likely predator. He is thought to be keen to move into Poland.
Nord Anglia Education, which runs international schools for British ex-pats in China and Central Europe and conducts school inspections in Britain for Ofsted, jumped 81½p to 460p after agreeing a 460p-a-share bid from Baring Private Equity. Holders of nearly half the shares have agreed to accept the offer.
Focus Solutions, a provider of software to banks, was flat at 25½p despite Daniel Stewart, its house broker, saying that the agreed bid for Financial Objects, an industry rival, by Temenos, a much bigger, Swiss company in the same field, would make the outfit worth 42p at a comparable multiple to its earnings. It has a 57p target price. Portrait Software, up ¼p to 9.625p, is the only other listed firm supplying this niche.
Minorplanet Systems, which makes satellite location devices for companies with fleets of vans, fell 5p to 26p after it rebuffed a bid approach at 40p, saying that it was too low. Sepura, the maker of walkie-talkies for emergency services, rose 18½p to 73½p. It had fallen on Thursday amid rumours that it would issue a profit warning, but after the market closed it said that it knew of no reason for the drop.
