Twice as many mothers suffer from postnatal depression as previously realised, a survey for the Royal College of Midwives suggests.
One in ten mothers is generally accepted as suffering the condition but the new survey suggests that the true number is closer to one in five.
The survey, in which 500 mothers were questioned, suggested that there was a link between the condition and a difficult labour.
“Pregnancy is a wonderful, life-changing event for some women but the transition to motherhood can trigger anxiety, severe exhaustion and depression,” said Dame Karlene Davis, General Secretary of the Royal College of Midwives.
“This survey indicates that postnatal depression could be a lot higher than previously estimated and the reality is that the incidence could be even higher, as many women hide their symptoms and are too afraid to ask for help.”
While the survey could not be regarded as conclusive evidence, she said, it raised concerns that warrant further investigation.
The results also suggest that being in a “supportive relationship” could help to ward off PND. Only 18 per cent of married mothers said that they suffered PND compared with 25 per cent of single mothers and 27 per cent of those who were widowed, divorced or separated.
The survey was commissioned by the RCM to tie in with Midwifery Week, which starts today.
