Alexandra Blair, the Times Education Correspondent, has been getting by on just a few hours’ sleep a night since her daughter, Martha, was born a little over a week ago. But she is daunted by the thought that it could go on for another four months.
“I understand that babies this young are like little animals and like to feed regularly through the night. Last night she didn’t sleep at all between 11pm and 2.15am, then woke up again at 4am until 6am and then was awake again at 7.30am. I’m listening to a lot of the BBC World Service so am quite expert on foreign policy and the General Petraeus testimonies,” she said.
“I would be really quite concerned if I thought it was going to go on like this for more than six or seven weeks.
I’m 38 and I think older mothers are less capable of keeping going on a few hours’ sleep. I know Margaret Thatcher ran the country on four hours’ sleep but I need a bit more.”
She said all the gadgets and information on baby rearing has made parents “completely terrified”. “I already feel anxious about doing the wrong thing. The number of different monitors and accessories available to ensure your baby is fine plays on your fears. You feel guilty if you don’t have them. I hope as we go on I can take all the advice with a pinch of salt,” she said.
However, she does not think that she would be able to sleep peacefully if Martha were crying. “I know our mothers’ generation were happy to let babies cry but I can’t imagine that’s easy. I think it would go against my instincts.”

i have had eight children and if you go with the flow of the baby and rest when you can, as well as provide a gradual structure for the child all seems to smooth out. you cannot expect to have the life you had before having the baby, it is just a case of adjusting. I stll try and catch a cat-nap when i can...my oldest is 24 and my youngest is 6.

It is a complete myth that Thatcher managed on only four hours sleep a night. The lack of sleep didn't turn her into Mad Maggie she always had a screw loose.

Why still go on about Thatchers four hours,? I have never slept any longer than four hours and it doesn't bother me.
And where did you get the stupid Idea all older mums allowed babies to cry,? my three children received the best attention and I worked for them; which is much more than many single mums do today.

As a mother of a 9 and 13 year old, I can still remember the baby stage. Stop reading the conflicting advice, talk to a mother who has just gone through this stage for practical and livable advice. Accept that the baby has changed your life and sleep when the baby does, ie during the day. Move the baby into another room and you will learn what the different cries mean and when to go in.
Enjoy motherhood, it will pass by so quickly, motherhood is as much as a career as anything else, just unpaid and you need to accept that it take time and effort and is a continuous learning curve.
You can juggle responsibilties just don't take too many on at any one time. Parenting has wonderful rewards just don't expect them all in the same week, its ok not to be perfect.
