SYDNEY A lesbian couple are seeking damages from their doctor after one gave birth to twins after fertility treatment, rather than a single baby.
The women, who cannot be named, are suing Robert Armellin for more than A$400,000 (£167,000) to cover the cost of raising one of the twin girls until the age of 21.
The birth-mother of the girls, who are now aged 3, told the Supreme Court in Canberra that Dr Armellin implanted two embryos, when she had told him minutes before the IVF procedure in November 2003 that she only wanted one.
The woman said that she and her partner briefly considered putting one of the babies up for adoption but dismissed the idea, deciding that it would be unfair to both twins, who are nonidentical.
The couple want A$398,000 to cover the costs of raising one of the girls, including private school fees, about A$15,000 to compensate them for time off work, plus an additional amount for medical expenses. (AFP)

If anything, then this is a sign of times that have gone totally selfish. A: if you are, by biological circumstance, removed from your original sex, you are removed from the reproductive circle. B. if you are fertile, you can only be that in your original sex - i.e. your gender-choice of homosexuality means that you have removed yourself from the said circle. You should decide what you are: a woman may need a man as much as a fish needs a bicycle, but a woman who can't ride one can't have a child.
In short: The doctor should not assist in such an unnatural procedure. And two women who wish to have children should ask themselves three questions:
Without a man and his sperm, I cannot have a child. I could, of course, go to a sperm bank and by some. But:
1. is a child the same as a car that I buy? Or
2. am I a woman - who needs a man to be that half of our species or am I an "it"?
3. does a child need parents or just a production machine?
Decide - but think before

I hope they will manage later to keep the trial secret before their child. Obviously they do not love it - how awful for the child should it ever find out. The good thing about IVF is the chance that doctors would get an idea of how much one wanted a child and whether they would look after it. Seems someone passed up that chance and/or went ahead anyway for commercial benefit.
If I got a cat from the local animal shelter there would be more concern about whether I am a fit and responsible 'mother'.

Firstly, in reply to Sophie's comment, it doesn't matter how much you love your child, if you cannot aford to support it then the child will not flourish, irrespective of whether you appreciate the joys of parenthood or not. It is perfectly reasonable for a couple who have assessed the pros and cons of having a child, including the financial costs, to be shocked and feel overwhelmed by the outcome of having to cater for two children. Whether the doctor is responsible for the twin birth as opposed to the process of fertility treatment which I am sure they were briefed on is another question.
Secondly, top marks to janda for making me laugh out loud in a stuffy wednesday afternoon office...

What kind of person expects no glitches in life? Someone to incapable of adapting to be able to cope with all the changes even one child provides. If these two "adults" can or will not change their expectations of their "perfect" lives, I have sympathy and fear for their girls, who will be unable to meet these women's demands.
elena, Orono, ME
Am I alone at thinking that these people are barking? They are lesbians and hence not predisposed to conceiving in the normal manner so use IVF, something that isn't cheap to start with, the chances of having a kid being low by this method. they then expect someone to pay to bring up the child for not acknowledging a change of mind communicated minutes before the procedure. They wanted a child, they got two and are unhappy? Well, sorry to say but will these two make decent parents? I feel sorry for the kids involved. There is one term for these two - selfish.

here, we have one selfish couple looking for a free ride. This is a frivilous lawsuit.

The doctor was supposed to implant one embryo. He implanted two. So he was wrong. The end.
starling, Lancaster,
They should be grateful to have any children under the circumstances. Pay them the money â minus the cost of IVF development over the years for the benefit of normal families I think they should pay for the privilege of having the treatment. As Ingrid from Feltham said GET A LIFE.
A Father, Cardiff, UK
Why on earth did they decide to have a child in the first place if the cost of rearing one so far outweighs the joys of parenthood? It seems adoption by parents who actually value them may well be in best interest of both of the twins.
Sophie Ibbotson, Salisbury, UK
Perhaps they should consider that their joys rather than their expenses are doubled . It seems that they are driven by an immature need to play with a live 'dolly' rather than any real emotional attachment to the childen. One can only hope that the legal system is not daft enough to give way to their selfish demands.
Bill Quirke, Derby,
What a farce! Doean't merit comment - a pair of muscle-bound sheilas who are obviously so obnoxious they can't get impregnated by even an ugly drunk male ......
janda, KL, Malaysia
This is crazy! This was an IVF procedure. Had she not fallen pregnant she would have moaned that she didnt have a kid. Get a life!
Ingrid Temmerman, Feltham, UK
This should never have even got to court complete twaddle!
Ami, blandford,
Daft, the doctor should ask for both babies back - complete satisfaction guaranteed or your money back.
sam, london,
After reading this story about the lesbian couple suing the doctor over having unwanted twins, all I can say is they must be two of the most selfish, greedy people I have ever heard of. $400,000 for the cost of sending the other child to a private school and raising her until 21? Are they kidding? plus they want money for time lost from work. Arent they going to take time off work anyway to care for the other girl?
There are plenty of women, and couple out there who would dearly love to have a child and cant, and try many time and fail,or go through the pain of miscarrying, yet these women have 2 children, and are doing nothing but moaning and complaining.
Did they only just realise that they would be having twins or did they know all along?
Nice way to start your life for the unwanted twin isnt it? hey kid, we didnt want you so we sued the doctor. They should be ashamed of themselves.
