Helmut Newton was reputed to be one of the most expensive photographers ever, demanding £100,000 to £200,000 per day, plus expenses.
But it's the Newton Machine, an invention that gave shutter control to his models, that has been recreated in the modern-day setting of Topshop's Oxford Street store.
The invention puts the model in front of the camera and a mirror, allows them to check their pose and then capture their own image using a remote trigger. The bespoke in-store studio was recreated with the help of Newton's agent Tiggy Maconochie and assistant Fifi, in order to get a set up closest to the original as possible.
Newton created the machine in the early Seventies to prove that models took better pictures than their photographer boyfriends. This time around, Topshop says it hopes that the models, customers who can choose from a range of accessories and make-up touch-ups before they get in, will upload their pictures onto Facebook.
Topshop expects around 300 customers to make their way through the 'machine' every day. They'll be able to admire their own poses, along with those of others in the in-store Gallery Wall or online at newtonmachinetopshop.com.
- The machine will stay in the Oxford Circus store until June 15, and is then recreated in Manchester and Dublin simultaneously from June 17-22.
