Even among the few peacocks that still strut around Soho it is not hard to miss Daisuke Sakaguchi. Sporting an almost cartoonish quiff with a rakish brown stripe, he’s sitting in a café behind Carnaby Street. It seems a fitting place to meet the young designer whose eye-catching graffiti-inspired jewellery has him poised to move from fashion’s fringes to mainstream success.
A Londoner with Japanese parents, Daisuke studied a foundation course in metalwork at Camberwell College of Art before going to Central Saint Martin’s College of Art, graduating in 2003. It was after the foundation course at Camberwell that he realised he could mould together his love of fashion and graffiti.
"I’d always been into modelling as a kid. When I was building model cars, I would only follow the instruction so far before doing my own thing. Then when I was growing up I got into graffiti, hip hop art and fashion, so doing what I do now is just being able to combine all my loves and hobbies."
His look may draw attention, but his personality is more unassuming than his bold appearance. "There’s the idea in graffiti that it’s important that people see your work. It’s just the same with fashion and car designers, having an audience. As well as the look of my jewellery, it’s one of the things that is similar to doing graffiti, the exhibition side of things."
If that is one of the principles behind his work, it is shown in the chunky street look of his jewellery. There is a fine eye for detail in it as well as the bling - his sterling silver cufflinks have little aerosol cans designed as the pins. His work has already attracted the attention of celebrities who aren’t known for shunning the limelight, including Elton John, David Furnish and even David Beckham.
"Some of my stock was being sold in Comme des Garçons and on the first day it was there both Elton and David Furnish came in. I ended up getting a commission from them to make a belt buckle and a bracelet. David and Victoria asked for pendants for Brooklyn and Romeo, as christening presents I think, so they could use them as they grow up."
Despite his brush with England’s first family, his feet are still on the ground and he’s interested in doing more than providing a bespoke service for spendthrift millionaires.
"Doing the high end commissions is great but I don’t just want to make pieces for big names or be know for just doing that - although if I could work with anyone, I’d love to work with Marilyn Manson and Dita von Teese. The big name stuff is good for spreading my own name, but I’ll still make a range that will be more affordable, with pieces such as cufflinks, earrings and pendants."
His pieces are stocked at Savile Row shop Oki Ni among other London stores as well as in boutiques in Japan. He also worked with Adidas for a Run DMC exhibition in 2005, been invited to present a catwalk show in Tokyo later this year and recently worked with Vauxhall as part of the VX Collective (a Vauxhall sponsored group of designers and creative types).
So how much further can he go with his designs?
"Versatility is important and I have a number of aims for the year. I’m interested in the crossover between different areas of design and fashion. I’m hoping to make it to London Fashion Week next year, and I’d really like to make it Tokyo Motor Show as an extension of the jewellery catwalk show I’m doing for Tokyo Fashion Week. I’ve always been into cars, which was one of the reasons it was fun to be in the VX Collective."
Banish those images of b-boys wearing VW badges, with a business approach inspired by Paul Smith, Daisuke’s creative energies could see him add his touch to anything from alloy wheels to mobile phone straps before he’s burnt out.
