She doesn’t know why she’s so opinionated. I say, well, her dad is known for getting angry and thumping the table. “Right,” she says, “he’s an angry Irishman.” Is he actually like that? “He can be when he gets angry, it can be quite scary. But most of the time it’s pretty boring at home, to be honest. He’s not like wild crazy man, give us your money. I don’t think it’s nature, I think it’s nurture. I form my opinions by reading and watching the news and if I feel strongly about stuff I say it.”
Peaches is keen I don’t run away with the idea she is “some posh girl who hangs around Chelsea”, or that she doesn’t have a social conscience. “If somebody takes my phone,” she says, “I’m angry that I’ve lost all my numbers and, like, ‘ohmigod, my dad is going to kill me’, he always thinks I’ve lost it, which isn’t true, but I don’t feel anger for the people who took it. I feel sorry for them because it’s a small rebellion against the state. It’s just,” she continues, with the impeccably misplaced guilt of the young and well-off, “because of the culturally politically disenfranchised state that we live in! Because people are depressed and they have nowhere to turn and they need money so they take people’s phones and it’s not their fault, it’s the fault of the government!”
Her school, she explains, is very liberal, with no uniform. “You have, like, posh twats who just read Tatler and go horse-riding on daddy’s estate, but I don’t know anybody like that and I’m glad I don’t.” She also says, though, “there is that whole culture of people looking down on chavs, but that’s just a bit of fun… I don’t really associate with Harrow boys or Etonian boys who have those really conservative views.”
One Etonian boy she is impressed by, however, is David Cameron, whom she is soon to interview. She’s hoping for a scoop, not least “because he’s bessie mates with my dad right now. I saw his number on my dad’s phone, I was so excited.” If she could vote, she says, she would “vote Labour, but I think Cameron’s a bit of a hottie to be honest – cheeky grin, very charismatic. I think at the moment the Tories are a bit too right for me, but if Cameron brings them into the future then I’ll vote for them, but right now I think Tony’s a cool guy.” And what if Brown were Labour leader, as he will be by the time she actually can vote, at the next election? “No, I wouldn’t go for Labour if Brown were leader, he’s really, like, a socialist?” If I were Gordon, that verdict would worry me a bit. She may not want to be the voice of her generation, but she’s probably the closest thing there is to one at the moment. And it’s a loud voice, and a clear one, and set, I think, to become more influential as the years pass.
