Located somewhat unglamorously outside the railway station in Liverpool, Barbara Daley Hair and Beauty (0151-709 7974) is nevertheless one of the city’s premier league salons. It recently consolidated its WAG status when Coleen employed the services of top stylist Charlie for her 21st birthday bash. Such aspirations are reflected in the prices, which are decidedly toppy.

Atmosphere and Staff: The outside is downright ugly. Inside, however, the salon is airy, clean, comfortable and unpretentious. The staff are mostly young Liverpudlian fashionistas: polite, friendly and professional. The beauty therapists are especially good, although the treatment rooms in the basement are disappointingly basic – no extra-wide beds, fluffy towels or scented candles here.

Treatments: A St Tropez spray tan (£32) was described as “fabulous”, no streaks and very thorough. Our spy specifically requested a light colour, which she got. An eyebrow shape and tint (£29) was equally successful, done just so and to the spy’s specifications. The Algomask Facial (£52) was marred only by the product hard sell at the end; and a head of highlights and cut at £152 was felt to be a little pricey, but ultimately worth it.

Top of the league for: Professionalism, expertise.

Relegation for: Hard sell on products; expensive.

Final whistle: Three out of five.
