Dr Hauschka, £7-£32 (01386 792624)
They say: A holistic range to maintain skin’s natural balance.
We say: Easy to use and pleasant smelling – helped to calm and balance.
The mask was particularly good. However, the tubes cracked easily and
spurted cream. Only bottles could be recycled.

Stella McCartney, £29-£49 (01444 255700)
They say: Truly organic products “to give your skin everything it needs
and nothing it doesn’t”. They do not contain animal-derived ingredients and
are not tested on animals.
We say: The elixir left the skin feeling dry, but the cleanser was soft
and soothing, and skin felt smooth. Products all smelt of rose, but the
packaging was over the top – cellophane around the cartons diminished the
“ethical” effect.

Spiezia, £8.75-£41.50 (0870 8508851)
They say: Handmade using herbs, flowers, oils. Certified by British
Soil Association.
We say: Skin is glowing. Products did not irritate skin around the eye
area, which is prone to eczema. The wax-based cleanser is taken off with a
gentle floral toner. Expensive but lasts a long time. Minimal packaging –
bottles made from recycled glass.

Neal’s Yard Remedies, £3-£35 (0845 2623145)
They say: Fragranced with pure essential oils. The first company to
achieve British Soil Association certification for nonfood products.
We say: A mixed bag. The scrubs and masks were great. They didn’t feel
too abrasive and left skin shiny and smooth, although the daily products
(cleanser, moisturiser) were too oily. Overall, a slight disappointment.
Economically packaged with clear labelling.

Jurlique, £9-£84 (0870 7700980)
They say: Natural antioxidants and plant-based ingredients to enliven,
nurture and hydrate.
We say: The Day Care Face Lotion, the Herbal Recovery Gel and the Face
Wash Cream are outstanding products that improved the complexion
significantly. Smelt gorgeous and the packaging wasn’t excessive. However,
the cleanser was rather heavy.

Organic Pharmacy, £24-£105 (020-7351 2232)
They say: The only pharmacy in the world dedicated to using organic
products and treatments.
We say: Lovely to use. Skin felt very soft and didn’t suffer from
monthly break-out. Quite pricey but would last at least six months. The
majority of packaging could be recycled.

Alexandra Soveral, £9.50-£70 (020-7266 3577)
They say: Pure organic products made from a high grade of essential
oils. Does not include animal products, synthetic or harmful chemicals.
We say: Several stages of cleansing and moisturising were daunting at
first, but worth it. Skin was smoother, firmer and contours more defined (a
colleague asked if “work” had been done). The labelling was clear, the
packaging not excessive and recyclable.
