They say Rich in essential fatty acids, which help to restore the nails and protect against splitting and breaking.

We say The biggest culprit of dry and brittle nails is frequent manicuring. The cuticle acts as a waterproof barrier, says Tamara Griffiths, a dermatologist from the British Skin Foundation, and frequent trimming or pushing can harm its function, as can a lot of handwashing. Moisturising may help to restore it, she says, but will not necessarily strengthen or harden the nail.

As for almond oil, a study published this year suggested that it is an efficient moisturiser but that Vaseline is better at locking in moisture.

Feel-good factor The oil gives a nice sheen, but the applicator brush can drip, so mind your clothes. Smells like sweets.

Worth it? A nifty gadget, but if you really want to save money, try a small tub of Vaseline.
