I have fine hair that really dries out in winter, leading to split ends. What can I do?
Just like your skin, hair dries out in cold weather, and our addiction to hairdryers and straighteners exacerbates the problem. To stop ends splitting and to replenish the moisture in your hair, use a treatment masque. After shampooing, apply and leave on for up to 15 minutes before rinsing thoroughly. Kérastase Nutritive Masquintense (£25, 0800 3164400) for fine hair is ideal. Glucose provides the root with essential nutrition, while proteins nourish the hair’s fibre. Immediate relief comes from lipids which coat the hair’s surface – not only do they smooth follicles, they also act as a barrier to protect hair from the elements.
John Frieda Frizz-Ease Overnight Repair Crème Serum (£15, from Boots) is also fabulous. Applied before bed, it’s a lightweight treatment so won’t mark your pillowcases. Given eight hours (in an ideal world) to work, silicones seal the hair while a softening complex conditions it. Used regularly, you will find the condition of your hair improves markedly.

Neals's Yard sandalwood and rosemary hair treatment oil works wonders!

I have the same problem but all the products in the shops I've tried (including Kerastase and the Frieda Serum) are just too heavy. Lovely sleekness, but flat as a pancake and any natural body that may have existed is lost, so looks like I've got even less hair than before.

White Rain Shampoo and White Rain Conditioner (each cost about $1.00 US) do a fabulous job for fine hair and leave it with lots of body. I read about it years ago in Consumer Reports.

Another remedy is jojoba oil which resembles the skin's natural oil (Sebum). I prefer this to other oil treatments as jojoba is actually absorbed by the hair not just coats the hair like other oils. I must also say that Philip Kingsleys' products are great - find them on the web/John Lewis

Thanks for the tip Rita. I have the same problem and am going straight home to try the olive oil!
Saskia, London,
I have had three surgeries in ten days due to complications and my hair is very dry and has started to thin and fall out. I have found using simple Olive Oil (heated in the Microwave for about 30 SECONDS) rubbed into the hair and scalp leave for about three hours. It is cheap and it works!
