Essie’s array of nail polishes is so extensive – ranging from Moon Struck (a pearly white) to Aruba Blue (a vibrant sapphire) and everything in-between – that there’s a colour for almost every occasion. Secret Stash (£8.50, www.nailsbymail.co.uk) is a bright, candy pink that works as well in winter as it does in summer.

Ruby & Millie’s Face Gloss in Fire (£12, www.boots.com) is a glycerine-based, wax-free blusher that helps skin retain moisture, offering cheeks the perfect protection against harsh winter winds. The sheer, subtle shade brings a feminine flush to the face. Use a brush and apply it to lips, too, for a hint of colour and sheen.

Perfectly aligned, Tweezerman’s Slanted Tweezers (£16, 0845 2621731) are hand-sharpened to ensure that every last stray hair is removed with the least pain. Start by opening pores using a warm flannel and always pluck hair in the direction of growth.

The thought of hot pink in winter may make you baulk, but think again. It’s a universally flattering colour, looks fantastic with an LBD for the party season, and is a good deal more playful than the Gothic make-up that’s in vogue at the moment.
