As Baz Luhrman's £86 million epic, Australia, finally reaches cinema screens, all eyes are on the movie's star, the 41-year-old actress Nicole Kidman. Here she is at a Sydney press conference, looking her usual inscrutable self.
Kidman has a cruel kind of beauty, undeniable yet distant. For a girl who was born in sunny Honolulu, she cuts a startlingly glacial figure. She is in great shape - but rather like Madonna, her extreme perfection renders her strangely unsexy. In strong sunlight her fair skin and honey-red hair can take on an almost ethereal quality, inaccurately making her look fragile and vulnerable.
Like her legendary professionalism, her beauty regimen is uncompromising: nothing is left to chance. Her perfection borders on the artificial, and her make-up is too harsh for her elegant, delicate features. There is no softness, there are no fuzzy lines. Her skin has been smoothed and buffed to shiny perfection, to the point where it reflects light like a looking-glass. By contrast, her hair seems frizzy and brittle - and much lighter than her eyebrows, which are too dark for her skin tone.
She is also, of course, too thin. A little bit of flesh is not just natural on a woman of her age (especially one who had a baby in July), it is also desirable. Kidman could easily afford to gain half a stone. I suggest the occasional Mars Bar - great for breast-feeding, too.
New mothers often encounter problems with their hair and skin, so it helps to replenish lost nutrients from within. Perfectil Platinum (£39.49 for 60 tablets) is one of a number of beauty supplements around. This one contains a cocktail of boosting ingredients, including high-grade marine collagen, pine-bark extract, blackcurrant seed oil, lycopene and alpha-lipoic acid. And since Kidman looks slightly anaemic (again, a common post-pregnancy problem) a gentle, easy-to-absorb iron complex should help. HealthAid's excellent Iron Bisglycinate (£4.99 from victoriahealth.co.uk) contains vitamin C to aid absorption and will not irritate the stomach.
Make-up-wise, a softer lip colour is in order, and perhaps something a little more lively on the cheeks. By Terry Tinted Replenishing Lip Care SPF 15, £26 at Space NK (020-8740 2085), is both flattering and nourishing; and Nars Super Orgasm blush, £18.50 (narscosmetics.co.uk) will bring a bit of real passion to the face.

I think she is incredibly stunning, especially for someone her age that has recently had a child. As Tara said....jealous much?
Carly Naughton, Brisbane, Australia
She is only famous 'cause she married Tom Cruise. Think about that! She has definately gone the 'Hollywood' route of trying to look different. She looked good before with that gorgeous red hair and that natural face. Now she really does look like an expressionless zombie and especially in her films.
Samantha, Tasmania, Australia
I thoroughly agree with Jay, Debbie, Gemma and Mr T. This kind of pointless criticism is disheartening and cruel.
Alice, Edinburgh,
Obviously Nicole Kidman is gorgeous, duh.
But I do think that it seems like Nicole is falling into the plastic surgery trap! She is starting to look like a page out of 'paint by numbers'.
And I miss her beautifully striking red hair! Blonde = no.
And the author.. jealous much?
Tara, Philadelphia,
I am just glad I am not that baby trying to growth in her belly!
Lisa Sears, Toddville Md, usa
Oh yeah, I wish I looked as "bad" as Nicole Kidman.
marcy, liverpool, UK
I agree with the author..Kidman looks harsh. A Meg Ryan lookalike; those lips are so overdone. Bad hair, bad makeup, bad acting and totally overrated. I have never understood why she gets so much praise...her accents are woeful, and movies are forgettable; albeit Dead Calm. Eat Nicole, eat!
K, Brisbane, Australia
I agree with this article. Nicole could do with an update. A softer, more natural look would be more flattering and modern. I don't know what the men who are posting here are on about - there is nothing wrong with having a make over and everyone likes to look as good as possible!
skandy, London, UK
I agree with the others. Nicole Kidman is beautiful and successful, yet still not good enough - if she needs a makeover, how about the rest of us? How terrible that even when her only flaw is being too 'perfect', she is ripped apart in this way.
Debbie Monteith, Perth, Scotland
Let's see a pic of the author - perhaps we could all assess her looks and point out where she's going wrong. That would be constructive wouldn't it! This is how Nicole chooses to look - who are you to decide that's wrong! She looks great anyway - I'd be over the moon with skin like that!
Gemma, Burton-on-Trent,
Sounds like you've got your claws out.
You send a great message to young girls and women across the world. If they're beautiful, they're probably still ugly. And if they're ugly there's always make-up to use until the day they throw themself off a bridge because they're so hideous to look at.
Mr T, Dudley,
How does anyone benefit from this cruel and pointless 'deconstruction of a beautiful woman? She looks great, not "anaemic", "too thin", "harsh". Enough with the petty jealousy: we women shouldn't need to knock other women for our own entertainment. The Times can do better.
Jay, London,
