Atmosphere: Penge is not immediately synonymous with glamour, so the smart little oasis that is Ego is a great find. Sumptuous red flock feature walls are lit by industrial, Philippe Starck-style lights in maximalist-meets-minimalist mode, and the mood and music are young and upbeat.

Staff: This is owner Andy Loizou’s flagship salon (his second is across the Thames, in Queen’s Park). He was as expert at listening to and interpreting our spy’s vague notion of her desired style as he was at delivering it. Her hair – including the oft-missed nape – was competently washed by a junior stylist, and refreshments promptly delivered.

Products and treatments: Our spy’s dull bob was transformed with skilful under-cutting and texturing, and her bottle blonde given a gorgeous golden glint with Kérastase Bain Chroma Riche Shampoo and Conditioner Masque (£13 and £24 respectively to take away). Andy applied Kérastase Ciment Thermique (£16.50) before blow-drying and straightening, lending her locks heat-activated protection and an impressive sheen. Cuts from £25.

Highs: West End skill at South London prices.

Lows: Saturday staff who are keen but green.

Marks out of five: Four and a half.
