BREATHING technique, a central component of yoga, can also be used to improve a golfer’s game, according to Ailon Freedman, an instructor. “We teach golfers how to breathe in as they take the club back and out as they recoil,” he said. “Many hold their breath while taking a shot, which just increases the level of any tension they might be holding in their body and makes the shot less fluid.”

In his workshops at golf clubs, Freedman aims also to increase the players’ sensitivity, in particular with regard to playing chip shots, bunker shots and putting. “In order to have a feel for the shot in your hands and wrists, you need to be very calm and withdraw the power you might just have used for the tee-shot,” he said. “You learn how to get into this state of calmness doing yoga poses and can then play shots from that neutral place.”

EXERCISE

Floor twist (For the lower back, waist and abdomen)
Lie on your back and draw your knees up and into your chest, placing your arms straight out on the floor in the "crucifix" position. Now lower your knees togethre. Turn your head to the left. Breathe deeply and feel the stretch on the left side of your body. If you rae able, straighten your legs and point the toes up towards your right hand. Hold for at least one minute, then repeat on the other side.
