Beverley Glock presents farm-fresh food to make with your kids. Three-year-olds can make this with an adult

The hedgerows are full of plump blackberries for you and the kids to pick. Make sure that you soak the berries in cold water for 30 minutes first to oust any bugs.

Prep time: 35min; cooking time: 30min; makes 9 flapjacks

120g butter
80g Demerara sugar
2 tbsp golden syrup
250g rolled oats
1 Bramley apple, grated
250g blackberries, washed

Preheat the oven to 180C/ 350F/gas mark 5. Melt the butter, sugar and golden syrup in a saucepan. When melted, mix in the oats and grated apple. Mash the blackberries with a fork. Grease a 20cm cake tin and line with baking parchment. Press half the flapjack mix into the base of the tin, smear the mashed blackberries gently over the top and top with the rest of the flapjack mix. Bake in the centre of the oven for 25-30 minutes until nicely browned. This will take longer to cook than normal flapjack because of the moistness of the added fruit. www.splatcooking.net
