You're the Alaskan stars of The Discovery Channel's Deadliest Catch. Any brotherly power struggles as co-cap'ns of your crab fishing boat The Time Bandit?
Johnathan No. We take it in turns. We built the boat and we're partners in the boat.
Day in the life of a crab fisherman?
Andy We go out for months at a time. We set pots to catch the crabs, then bring them back and make a lot of money. It takes seven days to get to them, so we're in the middle of nowhere.
Take a while to get your sea legs?
Johnathan I throw up once every trip. Seasickness is the most miserable thing in the world. It's like being a spinning-head drunk, trying to hold the cold toilet. Then you put yourself on a merry-go-round with your puke. There are no cry babies in this business, so you gotta work while you're sick. Ginger helps. Conventional stuff just makes you sleepy.
Need to be in shape?
Andy There isn't really anything you can do to prepare... you just get out there and start.
Johnathan You burn a tremendous amount of calories. None of our pants fits us when we come home. You get lean; lean and mean.
Five-a-day to keep scurvy away?
Johnathan We have a roast, and throw potatoes, carrots, cabbage in a big pot. Any chance you get, you drink or snack, so we have a microwave on deck too. We probably eat 8,000 to 10,000 calories a day.
Get much kip?
Andy Four hours every 24 if you're lucky. Sometimes you fall down on the deck and wake up with everyone laughing at you. You can't show weakness or you'll be eaten alive. We're all going through the same misery so that's why we don't whine about it.
Ever fancy a nice, dry office job?
Andy Sometimes, but this is the one thing we know how to do really well. Our Dad was a fisherman so we grew up fishing. We make $30,000-$40,000 each a month, which makes all the misery worthwhile.
The misery?
Andy It's not miserable the whole time. We see stuff that nobody will ever see in their life ... whales, dolphins, porpoises, crab. There are only 70 of us in the world who do this.
Bit of a thrillseeker?
Andy We love the adrenalin part of it. If you went up a 40ft wave and came flying down the other side, you'd get a thrill too.
Feel the fear?
Johnathan When you're two and a half days from land, and you hear that there's a storm coming, and there's nowhere to run, it's the longest night of your life. Then it hits, and you're in the middle of 100ft waves with 30ft white-water breakers on top.
The perfect storm...
Johnathan If you get washed over, or the boat catches fire, you can only live two or three minutes in 34F water.
Ever lost anyone?
Johnathan It's the most dangerous job in the world and you know that someone's going to die every season.
Stress ever get too much?
Andy We're not very stressful guys.
Johnathan We'd be happy even if we had jobs in a hamburger joint. We'd be playing hockey with the muffins, playing pranks on the French fries guy, throwing hot chicken nuggets down someone's pants.
Spiritual in any way?
Johnathan More spiritual than religious. You can't go out into the ocean and think that you're the centre of the Universe.
Andy Everybody prays for us. We just take care of the boat.
How do you recover when you get back?
Andy We offload and have a few drinks.
Johnathan That's why you hear all the drunk fishermen stories. When they're on land they drink, and then they fight because they've been months without a drink.
Married to the sea?
Andy I have a wife of 24 years with two grown-up girls. Johnathan has two kids too.
Settling down on land any time soon?
Johnathan Five years maybe. We're going to quit doing winter fishing because it can be -45F out there. We're going to start moving round catching big game, hunting...stuff like that.
Any regrets?
Johnathan I wished I'd spent more money on whiskey and women.
