Paris Hilton was summoned to appear in court today and faces being sent back to jail after her early release provoked outrage and allegations of favouritism.
The socialite was freed from a Los Angeles County jail yesterday morning and allowed to spend the rest of her sentence at home, amid fears that she was on the brink of a nervous breakdown. The 26-year-old hotel heiress who has made a career out of being empty-headed, had served fewer than five days of the 45-day prison term given to her by courts.
The decision to allow her to go home was condemned as an example of “double standards” by the Rev Al Sharpton, the black civil rights campaigner.
“This early release gives all of the appearances of economic and racial favouritism that is constantly cited by poor people and people of colour,” he said. “There are any number of cases of people who handle being incarcerated badly and even have health conditions that are not released.”
The decision to release her early was made by the sheriff on undisclosed medical grounds. “I can’t talk about the medical situation other than to say that, yes, it played a part. This is certainly not unprecedented and happens from time to time.” Steve Whitmore, the sheriff’s spokesman, said. He explained that she would be confined to home for another 40 days and required to wear an electronic ankle tag.
“I have directed my criminal branch to immediately explore all possible legal options to ensure that the law is being applied equally and justly in this case,” said Rocky Delgadillo, the Los Angeles City Attorney.
Later, a “The city attorney filed a petition for an order to show cause why the sheriff should not be held in contempt for releasing Ms. Hilton, and demanded that she be held in custody,” Superior Court spokesman Allan Parachini said late Thursday afternoon.
In January Hilton pleaded guilty to charges of reckless driving and was sentenced to 36 months probation. She was then stopped while driving on a suspended licence twice more — on January 15 and February 27 — before being charged with violating probation. She had checked into the jail on Sunday night, after a surprise appearance at the MTV Movie Awards. “I am trying to be strong right now,” she said. “I’m ready to face my sentence. Even though this is a really hard time.”
In her short stay Hilton was housed in the “special needs” unit, which is separated from other inmates and is reserved for police officers, public officials, celebrities and other high-profile inmates. She did not have a cellmate.
Richard Hutton, her lawyer, said this week that his client had been doing well in jail. “She’s using this time to reflect on her life, to see what she can do to make the world better and hopefully, in my opinion, to change the attitudes that exist about her among many people,” he said.
There were reports last night that Hilton had been suffering from psychological trauma and refusing to eat prison food, and that doctors had been advising prison staff that she was on the verge of a breakdown.

They should make her go to college and make her achieve some intellect, punishment isn't going to do a GOD DAMN THING!!! Her celebrity and background and her circles empower her far too much to pay attention to a judge. Force her to get a college degree in philosophy or something useful.
Sergio, Mount Kisco, USA
treated like US? You obviously aren't a person of color, and definitley not a black man or woman. Deny it if you want, but its the TRUTH. "Hatin"? No, just wanting the justice system to be FAIR. And Clearly its not.
PC, Atlanta, ga
The judge should revoke her probation and send back to prison to serve the full three years....then send her to a halfway house for 6months with a seven PM cerfew, Oh yes he should make those three years in a general population cell area...
randolph, DANBURY, US
Obviously Paris has some mental issues. Adjustment disorder is likely one of them. Also from what I'm reading she is also refusing to eat or drink. Not sure how long she can keep that up but dehydration will kill someone probably after a week. Either they should have her be on IV nutritional feeding, or be sent to a mental hospital.
I've seen people being given ECT because of refusal to eat or drink, refusal to get out of bed. ECT by the way is electro convulsive therapy. And yes, it's still use, though nowadays they give the patient anaesthetic and muscle relaxants so that it's "gentler".
I've no issue with ECT myself, as I've seen it work before on someone who was at the hospital the same time as me. Maybe that's next for Paris?
astra, Tor, Can
You all should be ashamed. The fact of the matter is that very few people go to jail for driving on a suspended license. She was singled out because she is rich. She was picked on because she is beautiful. She was maltreated because she's everything you people are not. I am tired of hearing you talk about how Paris deserves to be treated like this, when we all know that you are just hatin'.
C, San Antonio, tx
The Hiltons,of all people, should know the rules of 'Monopoly' :if the 'Chance' card (the legal system)so decrees, then 'Go to jail' (for the duration of the sentence, not part of it);'Go directly to jail' (don't stop off at the local beauty salon or at your exotic mansion);'Do not pass 'Go' '(the entrance to daddy's bank);'Do not collect £200 salary '(a million dollars a week spending money).Do not throw a tantrum if your lawyers or your psychiatrist can't throw two sixes to get you out.Remember that there is only one 'Get out of jail free' card in the pack, and don't complain if you haven't got it.
Robin Kempster, Brighouse, England
Imagine climbing out of your car after being rear ended at a red light and seeing Paris Hilton stumbling out of her Bentley... It would be like winning the Lotto!!! Free Paris now and toss her the car keys!!!
Doktor Jimmy, West Hollywood, California
I resent the Canadian who feels that it's possible to leave race out of anything. Obviously, he is white. If a person of color, in addition to lacking the financial means, had violated these same crimes (repeatedly) the situation would not be equal. This is blatant classism and racism! Hilton thought she'd have quiet time to reflect her constant disregard for American laws and make the world a prettier place. I guess she was shocked upon the discovery that jail is not a happy place. I'm sure the majority of people who enter prisons have potential or ACTUAL nervous breakdowns; that is the point! If you cannot abide by and respect the laws generated to keep us safe, you must face the appropriate consequences. Im disgusted by our legal system and appalled by people who cannot decipher the inequality represented here. I'm sure Paris will suffer greatly in her multi-million dollar home with her rhinestone-covered ankle bracelet.
Karin, San Francisco, CA
I would volunteer to spend 45 days in the Hilton house. Why is living in a mansion with people to serve her, considered punishment. It makes me sick to my stomach to see such a spoiled, disrespectfull, drain on morals and society be able to get out of jail for being a celebrity. I feel sorry for anyone who has even a little bit of empathy for that waste of space, and tv film.
jonnyd, kansas city, mo
I would love to see Paris Hilton back in jail....let her know what kind of bad choices she's been making.....you know when ever you have so, so many younger children looking up to you...it's going to make you wonder what and where did I go wrong...I don't think that any parent would want to ever go get their son/daughter out of jail....I'd like to tell you this though you have all the money in the world and you end up where? Maybe this will give her time to realize what and where she's going to do.
You need to woman up and start making positive choices.....If you keeping on doing what you do it is only going to get worst.
hdean, DaVille , USA SD
ooh please, anyone of a number of nameless faceless inmates are doing the time. Why can't she. The prison system is more then equipt to put up with her childish antics. Through into general population with other inmates. She'll be juuuuuust fine. mmm mmm mmmmmm.
By the way. I really dont care.
jules, dallas, texas
If she wasn't famous people wouldn't have even heard that she had got early release so isn't this
"an example of double standards by the Rev Al Sharpton, the black civil rights campaigner.

Why is Paris better than anyone else. If a poor or even middle-class person had been charged for the same thing, they have received more time in jail for probation violation.
Originally sentenced to 36 months probation in January. Then, in January and February she is violates her probation. For anyone else, probation revoked and sent to jail under the original sentence of 36 months; would have to spent more than 45 days in jail before considered for release and would have been placed on probation for the rest of the 36 months, had to attend alcohol/drug class, pay probation fees, and report in person daily, weekly or monthly (whichever the courts decided). But of course, she is PARIS HILTON, heiress to the HILTON fortune. So, naturally she gets her hands slapped and feigns illness to forgo incarceration. She is sent back to 4,000+ square feet mansion to suffer. Send the next person convicted of a DUI to her home with a monitoring device to serve their time. Seems fair to me.
Sheila, Tempe, United States / AZ
Not once but twice caught with a suspended license! I guess she got off the first time without much incidence. Looks like she gets and is used to getting alot of breaks. This should now be a wake up call. Must we stop her only after her car's front wheel is on some poor souls chest?
James, West Orange, NJ
Paris Hilton, like other international celebrities, are perceived and treated as gods who have power that far exceeds that of the average citizen. They are bigger and more important than the law. It will be nice to see if, for a change, this celebrity goes back to jail for all or most of her sentence, and justice-not celebrity-will rule this time.
anita, Santa Monica, California
She needs to serve her full sentence in jail. If I were in her situation as a white average american I would not get any special treatment. People with money should not be above the law or other human beings. Sounds like a remake of Animal Farm Hilton Style to me.
C, San Francisco, CA
Scott from Toronto, Canada said exactly what I was about to say!!!! I agree totally!!!

I served over 10 years in prison for possession of an ounce of marijuana. I have crippling migrane headaches, from a gun shot wound to the head years earlier, while in The Marine Corps. I am a 100% disabled veteran and require regular medical assistance, & must use either crutches or a wheelchair (depending on how far I have to go), but... that didn't prevent me having to do my time. But then again, I'm not a cute, multi-millionaire, heiress who can afford the best attorney. I'm just a beat up old veteran who had to accept a 'public defender'. ("Public Defenders" work in the same office as prosecutors & get their checks from the same place). This is a classic example: "For those who can afford it, there is "JUSTICE", for those who can't.. there is "THE LAW". That's just the way it is... deal with it. She needs to do her time on "the inside" like everyone else does. Perhaps it might even make her a little more human, a little less 'special', like the rest of us.
Dale "Mad Dog" Messmer, Cape Fair, MO
It's only a drunk driving charge??? I'm more likely to get killed by half of LA? Hey, Eric (Harrogate, UK), no one in LA has ever harmed me or anyone in my family. But a drunk driver -- who was driving on a suspended license, violating his probation -- killed my son. For those who think drunk driving is a "non-violent" crime have no idea what that decision -- and it's a decision a person makes to drive drunk -- can do. Not only do I think 45 days is NOT enough, I think she should be completing community service.
Patricia, Overland Park, USA
I think that this is completely unfair! If it was anyone else, they would serve their full sentence. Her time was reduced twice and she was let out after 3 days on a 45 day sentence. It outrages me that because she is Paris Hilton, she gets to not serve her sentence. Who cares if she is on probation? It is not the same thing as jail!
Kristen, Chandler, USA
I'm surprised noone has yet said George Bush' administration set this up to divert attention from the botched war which I would probably agree with :), but seriously it doesn't matter how it looks to people of any socioeconomic status, the law is just that. She got sentenced to jail time she should be in jail. When she gets out then she can deal with the fallout. Lindsey Lohan will probably get her butt kicked by everyone under 21 trying to get in a bar even with celebrity :) you get what you deserve
Alex, Albuquerque, New Mexico
It's unfortunate that our society allows this type of injustice to happen, but it does. Money will always find a way to interpret the laws of the land. Hilton money found the solution for their daughters freedom. The question is not that the solution if evident will the law be upheld for other inmates in her situation?
Beverly, Atlanta,
What was Paris Hilton's real crime? She did nobody any harm. This was not an objective crime..It was a political "crime" of "failure to obey the government"...George Washington - Paris Hilton, what's the difference? Besides the obvious that is.
Frank, Virginia, USA
If she was reportedly on the brink of a mental breakdown don't send her home to isolation. Send her the appropriate psychiatric facility for treatment/evaluation like any other inmate. She has histrionic personality disorder, also know as attention seekers, they are quite manipulative. She should have to do the full 45 days. The whole thing is a farce.
SJ, Charleston,
Theres a protocol for these types of issues. I did 3 months in jail and I trusteed the infirmary. Ive seen people with aids that were very sick. I saw cases of Pneumonia. None of these people were sent home. A few where sent to the hospital and had a guard 24 hrs a day. No visitors. This is an outrage. I dont blame Paris....I blame the Sheriff.
They should give her a blood test when She gets there. If Shes had a drop of booze...She should have to do the full sentence. I heard She had people over to "celebrate" Her freedom. I wonder if Ms. Richie is starting to sweat?
john debruhl, Panama City Beach, Fl
What is an excuse any welthy person who has enough money to buy a mercedes maybach or rolls phantom, and pay a driver to drive under influence ? Maybe they dont have a enough money for a taxi when they go out because drink and food are too expensive when you go out ? Maybe someone could make me understand , everyone of them should get a maximum sentence cause i dont see an excuse. Let chauffers make ,,some'' money . Many others celebritys know better and they pay driver well ,very well, as they should thats a person you trusting with your life .
peter , miami, fl
It's my understanding anybody can go to jail. Since when do you get out of it by being sick or having a breakdown? You think people getting 20 to life or anything over a 4 year sentence are not having nervous breakdowns behind it? I admit jail life is extremely hard to deal with, and difficult to adjust to. People who are locked-up are there for a reason, usually for breaking the law. So I think she should suck it up, its only 45 days (30 with good behavior). Do your time and see what you can learn about yourself. If she's that scared she should go into the PC. That's for snitches, witnesses or anyone who doesn't want to be in regular population. You're locked in your 6x8 cell for 22hrs aday and you get 1hr for recreation by yourself and 1 hr to shower, use the phone and watch tv alone. This is availible for all inmates regardless of class, race, or sex or financial status.
DB, New York, NY
What a load of rubbish everyone is entitled to good legal representation if her lawyers managed to reduce her sentence then that is what she is paying money for, people get out of cases every day while people with no funds get thrown in jail for crimes they have not even commited due to city attornies making cases to economicaly expensive for them to fight..
Her lawyers fought for her and won jesus christ leave her alone she is not even a bad person!
J, Studio City,
This issue is based entirely on color: In this case green. Hiltons family has the clout, the California judicial sysytem is a sham [think OJ] and I'm shocked that so many people across the world didn't see this coming.
No matter the outcome of her 'travails in hell', Hilton will make more money than Midas off this farce. And the only ones responsible are the fans who live to hear her every shallow, incipiant thought, or cut her photos from the gossip rags.
DRB, Boston, MA USA
this is the most bunch of bull I have ever read. ANYONE CAN CLAIM THEY ARE HAVING A BREAKDOWN! Look at Lohan. She knew she was going to get in trouble and what did she do? Checked herself into Rehab. Celeb especially white celebs get the better deal of things. Rappers have to face full sentences so brats like Hilton and Lohan should too. So what if she doesn't want to eat prison food, let her starve. I am sure there are others in there that dont want to eat it too but they suck it up and do it anyways and loads of them are in there for a longer time than her.
Jmarie, stafford, va
Let's get real. No one serves 45 days for a parole violation. Everyone is yelling "She should be treated like everyone else!" If she were anyone else, she'd get a week in jail, or house arrest. She got a bad deal because she's Paris and we all hate her.
david, oc, usa
Oh and one more thing. I don't feel bad for Paris that she has found herself in this situation, she alone is responsible for the decisions she has made leading up to this point. But I do pity the fact that she did not grow up with parents who had the foresight to set limits and boundaries that might have enabled her to function in the real world. Her parents bear much responsibility for the spectacle this is Paris Hilton. I guess it just goes to show that money can' t buy everything. So many intangible things like morals, character, and pride are priceless.
Donia , Sacramento,
There are those who paint Paris as a victim of her privilege, but I say, "With great privilege comes great responsibility. There is no double standard going on here. The average person might have just been given community service, but lets be honest, Paris is no average person. She is a woman born to privilege who has taken zero responsibility for anything. She is a hideous example to the young women of this country and one who, though being afforded EVERY opportunity in life, has only managed to make a spectacle of herself. And whether it is because we love her or because we hate her, the fact is we almost all of us think about her. All this to say three things: 1) Paris should stay in jail, maybe a mental breakdown could actually transform her into a valuable member of society, 2) This entire fiasco is making the U.S. a laughing-stock and 3) Paris is just like the rest of us-a person who makes mistakes, but who will learn NOTHING if not allowed to live out the ramifications.
Donia, Sacramento,
Let's make a deal...Paris gets to serve out the rest of her sentence at home, on the condition that her anything having to do with her is forbidden from appearing in print or electronic format anywhere. You think she had a nervous breakdown before while in jail? Just wait until she's no appearing in the media any more! That's real punishment for her. And it would be a welcome break for the rest of us, too.
Jerry, Syracuse, New York
She has has so many opportunities and she violated them all. Now Nichole Richie's case is about to be reviewed too. Because she got stopped with a suspended licence twice and no charges were there against her. They should just do the time. Hilton had said that she wanted to be an example to young people. Well here is her chance.
Karina, Brooklyn, NY
For goodness sakes people, leave the girl alone!!! Do you really want law enforcement focussing on this, or would you rather your families were protected from murderers and rapists??? Clearly there are more important issues to concern yourselves with. If the cameras were pointed at you 7-24, what would they catch you doing???
anonomous, Ottawa, Canada
I guess if you have money you can get away with anything.
Paris, Brittany, Lindsey, they all have major problems
Barbara Mead, Orange County , CA/USA
I think that if the law on the books for DUI includes 45 days, she should expect to have to spend that long. What Paris needs more than anything else is some real life experience; some exposure to the real world to show her that there is more to life than partying, drinking, shopping ad nauseum, sleeping around, and getting your face seen. Paris is 26 years old and has less maturity than some 11 year olds I know. "I'm so hot" could very well summarize how important she is to the media, because she does not contribute anything else to American society than a constant source of ditzy, airhead blonde entertainment. Paris says she wants to do waht is asked of her to be a good example to the people watching her. Well, a good start would by serving her time without nervous breakdowns, appeals to the governor, and making her last meal before prison a national treasure. Paris is definitely an influence, one that America does need.
Grow up Paris!
Nick Hard, Minneapolis Suburbs , MN
It is so obvious that the prosecutors in this case are using the Paris publicity machine to gain publicity for themselves. I agree with an earlier comment: with so many urban problems including murder (by the way, I don't think LA is the murder capital of America), illegal aliens, security issues, tax evasion, drugs one would think the police departments and the Attorneys General of the city would be occupied with a little more like: tackling police abuse and corruption. It doesn't matter if I think Paris' behaviour represents a feckless, worthless, vapid example of what the American Empire produces, entitles, and rewards -- for once, she is the victim. (did I say that?)
j, boston, MA
It is not fair that some people get special treatment. We middle income people get in trouble for the least little thing, we get the book thrown at us. But people of her standards gets a slap on the wrist. Tell me is this Justice System fair!
Mistie, Cullman, AL
The sad truth is, we have no one to blame but ourselves. Society's fascination with the rich, and subsequent coddling, gives people like Paris Hilton license to do whatever they please, as they know that there will be no consequence for their actions. Hopefully, when Hilton kills someone on one of her drunken journeys, they will charge the sheriff who released her with being an accessory to murder, and toss him into jail.
Rob, Redwood City, Ca , USA
I'd like to see her serve her time like anyone else would have to! Perhaps housed seperately, but not fed seperately or otherwise coddled. She's a blight on Hollywood.
amal albadr, California Coast, USA
In the United States its not uncommon for someone on a parole violation for an alcohol related infraction to be given the maximum committed sentence for that level of crime (generally 45 days, sometimes 180 days) however its also very usual that the violator is released within a few days. This is a tactic employed by many judges to show someone the seriousness of court compliance, of which Ms. Hilton was not. Also being incredibly wealthy and famous doesnt hurt.
Jeff, Salt Lake City, United States
No, this wasn't about DUI, it was about a parole violation. I think people that promise the courts to take a course of action to avoid jail time and break the same law again deserves to be in jail. I think's it ridiculous that she has been released after a few days, it's not like she was sentenced for very long. Better people get thrown in jail for 90 or more days for getting caught drunk once. So now what's her punishment? Oh, you're grounded, but she can drink and do whatever she wants as long as it's in her house, that's not how most parole violators are treated. Put her back in jail!!!!!!1
Patrick, spokane, wa
Oh poor Paris didn't enjoy her 5 days in jail... Last I checked nervous break downs and medical issues were not reasons to be released from prison... and 5 days? this is an outrage against the american judicial system. If I was into conspiracy theories I would say the sheriff got paid off.
Lisa Winters, Wooler, Ontario
Leave it to good old Al Sharpton to make a racial thing out of this. It is double standard and is wrong no doubt. I wonder if it were Nicole Richie or Beyonce instead of Paris if we would have heard anything from good old Al??!
timothy, boston,
The whole world is watching as we make a mockery of the justice system that we go to war to protect. Shame on the Los Angeles Mayor, District Attorney and the Sheriff's Department. Paris Hilton defines "Ugly American".
Nanci, West Hollywood, CA
I agree with the comment that this is about popularity favoritism and not racism. You don't hear Sharpton complaining about OJ getting off, and everyone knows he did it!
Back to Paris- A "mental breakdown" is no excuse for getting house arrest...try explaining her release to those poor guys that are getting butt-raped in the slammer right now. I mean, God forbid she has to spend a few weeks in her mansion watching her big-screen TV and being waited on by servants.
Mike G, Tallahassee, FL
How silly. I went into jail once for a short term for a similiar mistake, and at the time I was on medication for anxiety attacks/anxiety disorder. The medicine was denied me, I suffered from anxiety attacks almost constantly the first few days. The food was the worst- just freaking awful- and here I am this pretty blond vegan. Well, I had to eat, so I did. No special concessions for me. I got through anxiety attacks and learned more about handling them while I was in jail than from any doctor I'd seen. I had to deal with it, so I did. Without meds. Jail is frightening & REALLY COLD, but there's nothing to wake your butt up about being a punk than being trapped behind concrete and 2 inch thick glass - and no one is coming to save your ass. They could have cared less about my anxiety attacks or meds withdrawal- I managed an extra blanket until someone tattled on me for that. But hey- that's 8 years ago and it straightened me out forever. Let Paris do the time. She'll get the message.
The Poet, Palm Beach Gardens, FL, USA
I can appreciate the opinion that there are worse things to worry about than drunk driving charges. I do not think that because there are worse things, we no longer worry about any of the smaller things. That being said, there are many people who believe that drunk driving is no small offense. The point is that she should have to pay the price for what she did and she got out of it easy. Anyone who is irritated by people like Hilton has a right to be disgusted that the sheriff was influenced by this twit and her money. If it were a regular person who was having a "nervous breakdown" in prison would still be sitting there.
Carrie Ann, St. Louis, MO
I must admit, you make a convincing argument Eric Campbell, (Harrogate, UK).
You're right, Los Angeles IS the murder capital of the world! What a bloodbath! Just recently I saw an old interview with one of the Manson "family" and it sent shivers down my spine! And before people play the "race" card too strongly, please remember that OJ got let off completely!
But you know, maybe if things were more balanced in a place like LA, people like the Manson family, who were obsessed with bumping off the privileged, wouldn't be so full of hate? Not AT ALL making excuses for them, but it seems there are big differences between the "have's" and "have nots" in that city (perhaps in the whole of the USA?), it it fills many people with rage.
The fact is, Hilton broke the law again and again and endangered people's lives by driving drunk. And I think if she gets let off Scott-free, it's only going to enrage the population, particularly of LA, even further.
Miss LIzzy, Sydney, Australia
This makes the American law service the laughing stock of the world!
Mike Jones, Farnborough, Hampshire
It will be interesting to see how the Judge views the Sheriff's actions. Apparently the Sheriff considers himself above the whole legal system. Paris Hilton, at this point is irrelevent. The Judge should send her back to serve the remainder of her sentence. He should then hold the Sherriff in contempt and jail him along side Paris. The Sherriff should be fired by the City and stripped of any and all benefits. He should be fined heavily and treated as a pariah in our society. If the Judge does not do this, or something similar, then the road to chaos is at hand.
John Bates, Dallas, TX
Drunk driving; suspended license, then driving illegally THREE times .. this girl has no sense of reality or proportion! I wonder what we'd be saying right now if she had killed somebody while driving drunk?
A decent spell of losing her privileges in jail may just wake her up to the realities of life (even though she will be kept safely away from all the "yucky" people there and given her own private bath and recreation rooms).
Let's face it, if it were you or I, we'd be in there .. so why not her?
MIss LIzzy, Sydney, Australia
No matter what the crime is or who committed it, she should stay in jail and do her time. Paris needs to be taught a lesson, that money can't buy everything!!!!!!
Tricia, richmond, va
People get anxiety from being in jail all the time. Maybe Paris having an anxiety breakdown will teach her how lucky she is to have been born into the world of the wealthy.
kit, somerville, America
This whole silly affair shows how bloody stupid we are.She should never have gone to jail, she should have been made to pay a fine commensurate with her wealth, the proceeds to be put towards helping other inmates in prison to build useful lives.
Michael J Rigby, Blackburn, England
she BELONGS LOCKED UP to learn the lesson: NO DUI
before she pulls a "Brandie" and kills a mother and kids and gets away scott-free
However she does have a mysterious illness and it's called HPD: In psychiatry, histrionic personality disorder (HPD), or hysterical personality disorder, is a personality disorder which involves a pattern of excessive emotional expression and attention-seeking, including an excessive need for approval and inappropriate seductiveness, that usually begins in early adulthood.
LX, Montreal, Canada
If Paris Hilton is claiming to be near a nervous breakdown, put her in the psych ward, like you would any other person. Just because her last name is "Hilton", she thinks the rules of government don't appy to her. That young lady needs to be taught respect to the laws of the land. Anyone else that disobeys them is subject to the same laws, and pays for it. Why shouldn't she?
Jenna, Wolfforth, TX
Can you say damage control. Now lets make a scapegoat of the sheriffs dept. Give the woman a break..
John Boy, Atlanta, GA
re:rs from jerusalem
3 hours is a slap on the wrist. Anyone else with a violation probation, and yes, just driving on a suspended license once would spend 10 days, MINIMUM.
The fact that she did it twice, involving alcohol, is even worse. And hello, sentenceing her to stay at home (where she can have friends over to party, she just can't leave) in her PALACE is no punishment or incarceration. 99% of americans would call that an expensive VACATION.
If she's hungry, she'll eat. If she refuses.. then they can put her on an IV drip.

Paris who ?
Swilly Tisher, Loch Maree, Scotland
It's not about who's the greater criminal threat, it's about doing what's right. Should we as a society show preference for one class of citizen then the very fabric that was the American dream will be torn asunder. Shall we become Orwell's _Animal Farm_, in which some are more equal than others? The message the DA is sending is quite simple -- if the judge says no early release, no house arrest, then the sheriff cannot circumvent the judicial order. We should all endeavor to do what is right.
And while the number of crimes in the US seems high in comparison to the UK, that is a factor of the larger population. According to NationMaster, the UK is actually ranked higher than the US in the number of crimes per capita.
Kathryn Wood, San Jose, California
There is a reason they have a 3 strikes your out rule in our legal system. Paris Hilton just like any other Jane Smith should suffer the same consequences of someone who gained all 3 STRIKES. I'm so tired of Paris Hilton and all other celebrities girls who make a fool of themselves on a daily basis. She's refusing to eat Prison food, that's not a medical problem that's her being SPOILED. She can't call and have sushi or gourmet food delivered to her behind bars. I mean prison is supposed to be uncomfortable so you DON'T want to be there. Also this alledged "life change" she's had. PLEASE she's been there 3 days, what could she have really reflected on and changed? She's a spoiled brat who once again got the easy way out. Last, anyone who says poor Paris is on house arrest, cry me a river. I've work with kids who've been on house arrest and they don't even live near a mansion or have maids, pools, or the ability to get anything they want on a whim. She needs to GROW UP & GET OVER HERSELF
AB, Valpo/IN, USA
i think that it's a good thing that she was released, though not for the reasons stated. drunk driving is not a real crime, because it has no victim. it is only a real crime when someone gets hurt. it's simply someone's opinion forced on society at the point of a government gun that the risk of an arbitrarily established "intoxication level" is too much risk to be taken by drivers. there is no real basis for it. if arbitrary risk levels are to be made intolerable, who's to say that the act of driving in any condition shouldn't be outlawed? it is a dangerous activity regardless. it's simple, no victim, no crime. let people on both sides determine what is the correct amount of risk to assume. a market based road system would completely fix the problem by allowing companies to set risk levels without destroying freedom.
brian, lakeland, florida
I hope she goes back to jail should have neve got out. Plus I hope the judge tacks on more time for not showing up in court and she should spend it all in jail not at home. Yes the sherriff should be held accountable. I wonder how much money he got for his next campain.
g.b. collins, gautier, mississippi
I'm a grandmother who is angered and appalled by the way Paris Hilton is being treated. Paris didn't create this system we live in where one person has so much more than another that the average citizen is compelled to prey on the wealthy. We need to stop and think about the social ills this imbalance has created. Paris is a victim of it, and no matter how much money she has, she didn't create it, and she can't make it go away. Being in a perpetual state of running scared and fleeing from the world would adversely affect even the most mature minds. Further, it really is disgusting the way media people are lined up in front of her home, and how they're lined up waiting for her at the courthouse. Brings to mind the bread lines of the 1940's my mother used to talk about. So, in light of these things considered, we need to get over it, and accept that some people are priviliged out of necessity.
Grammy, Sacramento, California
Perhaps it would be better if, instead of putting her back in and giving her more "coverage" later, the authorities took a rapid and sympathetic look at the circumstances of all the other inmates!
MikeM, St. Albans, England
Send her back. Why should she be treated any differently to others? When you commit a crime you should not be allowed to buy your way out of prison. This is not Monopoly.
Dick, Southampton,
Perhaps a one room house in cheapside would be better. Anything where she is restricted from any and all visitors except her immediate family and lawyer. No friends, no cameras, no people selling her things by bringing everything she wants to her. That's what jail means. I don't care if it is a slum or a multimillion dollar home. She needs to be restricted from the rest of the world for her full sentence.
Of course a 8x12 jail cell would have a more lasting impression.
The point is to show her that if she continues breaking the law, she loses everything and spends the rest of her life thinking about it. 3 days is nothing, two weeks would have been 66% of her reduced sentence.
Throw the little tramp back in jail.
c, bloomington,
Why are we paying so much attention to this case?It is really what Paris Hilton desires."No matter what they say, what matters is they say it about me".Isn't this her motto? We should just take her money. We are only helping her in her"career",and it is exactly what she wants.Though the breakdown...
chiara, milan, italy
I think it is outragous!!! How dare that spoiled brat get out of jail because she has money. Who ever was in on getting her freed better watch out... because if that airhead gets behind the wheel again drunk and kills a kid or someone else, There will be hell to pay from the American public. I hope the judge orders her back to jail.
DD
Diane, sacramento, USA
I think if an investigator would watch the bank account of the sherriff in LA county, it would become obvious why he released her to her mansion!
Norm Watson, Ozark, USA/AL
With all due respect to RS in Jerusalem, poor little Paris should go back to serve out her sentence in jail as any "commoner" would have to do. RS, do you REALLY think she'd be suffering at home? HINT: It's like spending time at a resort for most people. Do you really think she would learn any lesson from that? NO, she received more than her share of chances to avoid paying the penalty for her misdeeds and proceeded to continue violating the law. Paris obviously needs to learn things the hard way, and it's time she learns there really are consequences for her actions.
Rick Derrig, Iowa City, Iowa/USA
So what do we do disobey the Judge's orders? Is that normal? NOT!!! Why not send Paris' attorney and the Sheriff that released her to jail. Maybe that will get the Justice system back on track!!! Hello
rudy, roswell, nm
I disagree with Scott from Toronto. This is the United States of America not Canada Scott. In the USA it is always about race. There are no non-racial issues. There is a double standard when dealing with class and race in the USA, Europe and I'm sure in Canada as well. So once again a person of Scott from Toronto's hue deflects the real issue of Paris Hilton's non accountability into a romp against a black making mention of race. Scott from Toronto can't you now see how someone of my hue can see youtotally willingness to dismiss race as an issue as racist in itself. The USA has a black prison population of around 50% while blacks roughly only make up 14% of general population. So please tell me how a white women being let out for bogus reasons on a a jail sentence that was already cut in half has nothing to do with race? Maybe the Sheriff had financial and racial reasons to let Paris out of jail? Do you know the reason for sure? You have no authority to argue whether race is an issue!
TheRealScott, NYC,
Get a life folks!! If we spent more time perfecting our own lives and less time worrying about the plight of the "celebrity of the moment", we would all be more prosperous. Paris Hilton made a stupid decision by choosing to drive without a license, but I don't believe jail time was warranted. There are plenty of violent, hard core criminals running around in society who should be locked up.
I hope she learns from this experience and grows up.
W Chamb, Riverside,
The american legal system should show that they truly are just.. Send her back in jail, make it clear that money should not enter into the punishment.
IF a rich kid breaks the law, he or she should serve the time just as everyone else.
Charles Bukowski, noen, Norway
Paris Hilton was spoilt when she was little and expects the world to treat her like a princess which she is not. Why should celebrities be treated special when we as normal people have to abide by the law. If we don't we pay the price. Please jail her in South Africa? Maybe then only will she realise that life is not one ongoing party. What about all our normal working people? I did not read about anyone else recieving special treatment for going to jail. Who does she think she is, the next American President?
Annalize, Middelburg, SouthAfrica
Why should Paris be let out of jail, she should serve her time just like everyone else would have. She's a spoiled brat that thinks she can do anything she wants and get away with it. Not only was she caught driving with a suspended license once, but twice while on probation; come on if she was a poor or middle class person there's no way she would be getting off that easy.
I agree that the racial card is used too often, but in this case everyone in the world that watches Paris Hilton on TV knows she can manipulate any male figure. Lil Kim did her time, Paris should do her time also.
Monique, Calgary, Alberta, Canada
Everyone has to learn and grow and by letting her out without learning life's lessons she will break the law again. She should be brave and serve the sentence and the law should not allow her position to mock the Law.
simone, kent, uk
I think she should be sent back to jail. Their are people in jail with all type of problems and illnesses. Everyone should be treated the same. If you do the crime do the time. This was after several probation violations that she was convicted so she had chances. She doesn't have to go out to party. I'm pretty sure she has everything she needs to do that at home. She can have as many people over she wants while people in jail can not. What a slap on the wrist
Rhonda, Pittsburgh, PA
What about martha stewart and lil kim they were high end celebrities and they had to there time just like "normal people" and they did not get to go home after 5 days. One of those women where white and one was not so it is not about race it is about having favortism for Paris and it is time that she pay for her decisions. Medical condition or not she has to learn that she has to follow the rules like every other american. I hope she goes back to jail and maybe the younger celeberties will understand that we won't put up with them anymore just because they have money or what their names are. You do the crime and you'll have to do the time.
cecilia, lakeside, arizone
Many "regular people" wish it was so easy to get out of jail. I am sure most have "complained about their pillows and blankets" and "sobbed through the night" in vain!
The Sheriff is making an outrageous statement regarding equal justice!
If HIlton walks, let 'em ALL walk!
Doug LaPlante, Spokane, WA
To be young, ungifted, and rich is only way to get an out of jail card. I think all prisioners should chose her strategy for early release. The real question is, " How much did the sheriff get paid from the Hilton family ". Hope it was worth his career.
Al Conner, Springfield , USA / MA
I dont get how justice works. If she can get out of jail then why can't others with similar problems? I mean if her case will make everyone's cases more liberal then sure.
I was driving over speed limit on interstate freeway and they almost sentenced me to a year in prison. Driving over speed limit on an empty road for miles as far as the horizon.
And this lady breaks laws over and over, drives on suspended license and all she gets to do is sit at home for 40 days. Great justice we have! - aka for those who can afford it. Again I would not mind it if we all got the same treatment.
Chris, Los Angeles, USA / CA
Is she a citizen of this country or not, governed by the same laws as the rest of the people. WHAT IS GOING ON no one likes being in jail, much less the food, but that does'nt mean you get to go home. She lives in a mansion what kind of punishment is that. The Sheriff that let her go should be brought up on charges, was he bribed?
Paris is a whinner, if you break the law you should pay the price, and no Paris I don't mean with money.
Celebrities are not above the law nor are the rich, just like anyone else they have to live by the same laws as the rest of us. And if the Judicial System treats them differently maybe they need to be replaced.
What does the Govenor of the state have to say about his states treatment of it's residents no matter who they are or how much money they have.
If she gets off all the criminals from all over the world should move here so that they to can go home if they don't like being in jail.
Phillip Hurt, Munford, Al.
There is absolutely nothing to be gained by sending Paris Hilton to jail. She broke her probation - so what? There are thousands of violent criminals and child molesters who were freed from their sentences early for one reason or another. Because of her status, Paris Hilton is not safe in prison, I don't care how much you isolate her. Those that run the prison don't need the distraction and the liability for her well being. Those that insist she return to jail just have an axe to grind with the wealthy famous.
Sorry to say it, but there is a difference between Paris Hilton and the dregs of society that SHOULD be in a jail cell.
Steve, Dripping Springs, TX
One can only hope (well I don't wish harm on anyone) but, if and when she mows someone down in the street, because there are clearly no consequences for crimes of high profiles, that its someone of high profile or maybe someone close to those who keep letting people off because of their public status. Maybe then someone would think twice about giving light sentences and then not upholding them.
Dan, Sturgeon Bay, WI
This goes to show that there are two separate laws in the U.S. Those who have and those who have not. I am sure there are many in the prison systems who suffer much greater trauma. As far as eating prison food ....... give it up. She will eat when she gets hungry. This has nothing to do with colour as Mr. Sharpton claims, but being spoiled to a fault.
E Maxwell , Dallas,Tx
Ed Maxwell, Dallas, Texas
About the only only thing I have ever respected Hilton for was the fact she went to face her punishment but I guess thats gone now, what an utter joke.
D. Ambrose, Erie, PA
Haha what a legend - she makes me laugh, it's all just one publicity stunt really. She's got no brain, the poor girl, isn't that punishment enough? Haha.
Anthony, Hertfordshire,
Im a Brit Living in the US, this is an outrage!!
whoever thinks she should get house arrest is soft in the head, the legal system here tries very hard to do the right thing, it is just totally swamped with eronious nonsense cases liek this.
Its time Ms. Hilton started acting like an adult, not a spoiled nasty child. If anyone else got caught doing this, they would not be so lucky as to get into a "country club " prison,
she should not only do the time, but also lose her licesnse for a year, the same way that anyone would in England for repeated violations- Do the crime, Do the time!
no special treatment for air head celebs like her. She gives all of the other celebs a bad name and abuses her priveleges.
If she doesnt like the food perhaps they could bring her some sushi !!!, or Lindsey Lohan could bring a cake with a file in it!
matthew fairy, Weston, Connecticut USA
Seem like if you are in California or in the U.S, most of your comments are against about Hilton's released early. If you are in the U.K, most of you would blame on the U.S legal system or attack our city attorneys were so lame to arrest Hilton. I agree that our system isn't perfect but she got out after 3 days from the original 45 days, then later 23 days, it wasn't right. It's not about youre an elite in the socitety or not, you should be treated like any normal person. The point here is she made mistakes. If she has a lot of money and not too worry about find a job due to her history spend some time in jail, so why make things worst.
Just do her sentense and get out clean and fair. It would show that she is mature and willing to take her own responsibility.
Brandon Woods, Sacramento, California, US
I have to disagree with Eric Campbell of Harrogate, UK. As a native Angeleno I have to admit that I am tired of this double standard with Hollywood celebs. Eric is so blinded by the LA stereotype that he is now just making generalizations. NOT EVERYONE IN LA IS TRYING TO GET IN THE BIZ!!! This isn't about being on TV or getting your 15 minutes of fame...this is about rich people in Hollywood buying their way out of serious trouble. Anyone else in LA would have served the full sentence without being let out on house arrest.
SEND HER BACK TO JAIL!!! If she doesn't due the time she'll be back on the road with her bimbo of a friend Nicole Richie...drunk going the wrong way on the freeway.
Jesse, Los Angeles, USA
She should never have been sent to jail. The judge was not acting as a judge, he just wanted to hurt a rich girl. If he sends her back and she is injured by the excessive shock of the jail I hope her family sues California for all the money in the world. This whole thing makes America a laughingstock. How did we get to be a nation that locks people up for non violent crimes and lets the violent off with parole?
Stump, Wilmington,
she was ask 3 times to stop breaking the law, but she know she above the law, she should be thankful they have a special cell for her kind. I say 45 days in your special cell or 17 day in a real world jail cell.
Mark, Santa ana, CA
I feel that anyone who is to serve jail time should follow their sentense, no matter what, no matter who, no matter the financial level a person is or how well the person is know. This don't matter. The law is always the law and no body is above the law. I like Paris Hilton very much and have nothing against her, but when someone is caught breaking the law, I am with the law. Because the law was made by the American people of all gender and color. And the law should be honored.
Tom, Chicago, USA, IL
I think that Paris Hilton's sentence was rather harsh, and it is obvious that Miss Hilton is being picked on by Jay Leno,
Conan Obrian, and many other talk show hosts. Why? think
about if...Just because she was born of wealth? Whats worst, now they are contemplating the pardon of Scooter Libby, his crime placed Cia officials in danger. There are so
very many political pardons, and of Crimes much worse then that of Miss Hilton, whats wrong with this picture? Perhaps sending Paris Hilton to a school for trafic violators
would be more appropriate.
Edward, FT. Lauderdale, USA Florida
Paris Hiltons sentence was handed down partly because of her violation of probation but also because she thought she was above the law. She was stopped three or four times before anyone took any real action. Despite her released statement, I dont think shes learned a thing. She should have to go back to jail and serve her entire 45 days, just like the rest of us would have to do. Then maybe she really will have an appreciation for the rules. Or, at least shell have the makings of a great celeb tell-all.
Clover, Safety Harbor,
Ask yourself "If this were me would I still be in jail"?
As for nervous breakdown/alcohol dependency this is all made up(she is somewhat of an actress). Even if not made up there are ways to be treated while incarcerated.
Actions like this are why there is growing disdain for each other in America.
This thing is so out of control the Feds should step in like in the Mike Vick case!
K. Brown, W. Lafayette, IN
I dont think its rigth that everyone cares so much.. its stupid. People need to just live their own lifes and stop trying to make Paris seem so terrible. its not like she killed someone.
kaytee, Orange County,
Race is indeed an issue here as well. There is something called white male privilege in our society. If it were Lil Kim, she would have had to do her time (and she sure did). DUI is serious. She already violated probation, why let her skip out on jail too?
Natasha, Brooklyn, NY
She needs to be in jail. People die every day from crashes caused by drunk drivers. It's not about the risk Paris poses to one person, it's about the risk all drunk drivers pose to all people. Drunk drivers go to jail every day for driving drunk, especially those who violate probation and drive on suspended licenses. If money can so blatantly circumvent the legal system, people will lose what faith they have left.
Our legal system may be established for the purpose of protecting wealth, but in the interest of keeping the poor folks from storming the castle, it should appear to protect "equality."
B, Upstate, New York
Shes using this time to reflect on her life, to see what she can do to make the world better and hopefully".
No wonder her entire reflection on her vacuous, pointless and catastrophe of an existence only took 3 days.
Send her back to jail immediately. If America doesn't, this will forever be cited as the classic example of a double standard and discrimination. She has not served her time. She's a dangerous drink driver with no respect for authority who must be punished, and she has to cope with the time inside just like any other violator.
She wants to "make the world better"? Do us all a favour and disappear.
Laura Roberts, London, UK
The spoilt little RICH girl has no respect for the law or even her Parents- Its still the case of Money talks, the LAW is the law who died and made her god. She did the crime she must be made to do the time-other citizens do not have the options that she has been given because she can pay her way with daddy's and mommy's money that even they inherited by the grand father. The law is not an option for discretion because you have money.
Col, Coventry, U.K
I just pray to our Heavenly Father that I am never on the same road or in her path. Some day she will mow another humanbeing down and then she will have much to cry about.
Chris D. Bowen, Portland, OR
You know she was planning to have a party for her reassigned sentence of house arrest today? There were catering companies arriving at her door step as soon as she got back to her house. It seems whenever she is in serious trouble she turns to either her cell phone or to partying and it is about time that she start taking full responsibility for her actions. So her doctor said she was on a brink of a nervous break down and need prescriptions that require to be home Well there are millions of inmates who have anxiety in jail who need perscriptions or even have cancer and they are still serving their time in jail or in the jail's hospital facility. It is not about just race but really about the US justice system becoming a mockery because they are celebrity stoned. For crying out loud Paris came to jail directly after the MTV Awards. Some mental breakdown. And she used the same nervous breakdown excuse for a current lawsuit she's in with a diamond heiress during a civil hearing.
Tiffany, Bridgeport, CT
It really is sad that when faced with undoubtedly the hardest thing she has had to do in her entire life (sit and do nothing all day with people telling you when to get up, eat and go to bed) she cannot handle it. Jail is supposed to be difficult and stressful, that's why the justice system uses it as punishment for crimes. This is a woman who will do anything for attention and that's all this is, a cry for attention.
Cole, Escondido, Ca
Hilton is a drama queen and should have to serve her time like anyone else. She knew exactly what she was doing before, during and after sentencing. Why should she get any special treatment? If were any of us we sure wouldn't get that priviledge. As for Al Sharpten, he needs to think before he speaks. This was not a "white" or "racial" thing. Hilton got preferential treatment solely because of who she is, the money she has and the act she puts on. Anyone involved in her being released after only 3 days should be held in contempt. My whole family was almost wiped out in one night by a drunk driver on a suspended license. I have no sympathy for Hilton or any other person who drinks and drives, gets a suspended license, gets put on probation, and still drives. Not to mention her actions by trying to get Swartzenager to wipe her slate clean. The judge did not make an example of her. She broke the law and she needs to serve her whole sentense in population.
Debbie, Annapolis, USA
Again more of if you have the money you can do anything you want. Look at OJ.
John, st louis, mo
It is not fair that some people get special treatment. We middle income people get in trouble for the least little thing, we get the book thrown at us. But people of her standards gets a slap on the wrist. Tell me is this Justice System fair!
Mistie, Cullman, AL
isn't the cost of drunk driving in SOME parts of the world: DEATH?
Boo Hoo, go back to jail little girl.
edward b blunt, Deer Park, washington
I have been in the courts and seen people get a full year in jail for there first offense of drinking and driving and they were nobody's in the media eyes. The fact that this socialite was allowed to go home because she didn't like her environment is pathetic. No one likes jail and she NEEDS to experience what the real world is like if you aren't born into money. Money, fame and spoiled crying fits shouldn't play a role in her getting a home release. I find it sad that she is able to manipulate the system to her advantage. When will our Laws stand for something real?
Barbara, Hershey, Pa
Eleven years ago I lost a dear friend to a drunk driver. Twenty years ago my brother was in an accident that killed six people. The driver of the other car was drunk. My brother was never the same after that. When you drink you should not drive. If you do, and you get caught, I think you should have your license taken away from you for the rest of your life, no second chances. Until laws like this are enforced, more people will be killed, or left maimed for life, be it physically or psychologically. Driving under the influence is like carrying and pointing a loaded gun in my opinion. How many lives will it take before society wakes up? I have no sympathy or interest in Paris Hilton, other than she should not be driving. She is in a position to have a chauffeur; the rest of us can have a designated driver or take a taxi. It is about saving lives.
Lola Williams, Toronto, Canada Ontario
Good for Al Sharpton! I'm in agreement. Too bad that she won't eat prison food. It's prison and a punishment; not lunch at the Four Seasons! What about all the other inmates who don't like prison food and refuse to eat it? Are they released to their homes with ankle bracelets? Hell no!! If she gets away with this, I have lost all hope in our judicial system. My grandfather, a former judge, is probably turning in his grave at this injustice of equality!! And let's talk about the sheriff. What gives him the right to let her go and overrule the judge's decision?
Michele, Levittown, USA/PA
As in any country, money will out. On the other hand if you look at the record of people caught driving while suspended you will find that Ms. Hilton received a pretty heavy sentence. Now if she was drunk again and driving then she should be locked away for a year or more.
I think maybe she has learned her lesson, maybe she will
think about it next time she decides to drive while suspended. Anyone who has spent time behind bars knows that it is a very degrading and depressing thing as it is intended to be. Let her go home and spend the next forty days there. If she leaves the house without permission, throw the book at her.
K.C., Marquette, Michigan
What's absurd is the blatant difference shown for someone with millions who breaks the law vs. the insignificant citizens of this country. Come on she is a DUI offender!!! From my understanding, the laws are very serious in this respect and aren't there counselors and health clinics in the jail? Please!!!
Mrs. Debbi, Atlanta, GA
just goes to show why our justice system should be called, the "make it up as we go to suit the needs of the rich system"
ron delaney , corydon , Indiana
Paris Hilton put back in jail. Well Calif is known for being liberal this time Los Angeles went to far what about her Paris Hilton civil Rights . Can't was to hear about the law suit her parents are going bring against you.
Patricia Scali, Bellmore, NY
The penalty should reflect the crime. Should driving with a suspended license really be punishable by jail time or are there other ways to punish these offenders. Community Service, heavy fines, house arrest (less costly to the system, let them pay for the monitoring). The jails are overcrowded already. Let them be filled with robbers, thieves, killers, drug offenders, .
Carol Lea, Metairie, LA
Do you think we are going to get a "leaked video" of her in prison?
I mean, why else would she be released so early?
nadia, london,
Everyone needs to stop talking about Paris Hilton and her worthless exsistence. This is no big story, tons of celebrities have been to jail! I don't understand why she has to be such a wimp she should just get it over and done with and then no one will really care if she doesn't make a big deal out of it. Shame Shame!
Melissa, Connecticut, U.S.
According to preliminary data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in 2006, 17,941 people were killed in alcohol-related crashes - an average of one every half-hour. These deaths constituted approximately 41 percent of the 43,300 total traffic fatalities. Drunk (those at or above an illegal BAC of .08) drivers were involved in 13990 fatalities in 2006.
This is an increase from 2005, when 17,525 people were killed in alcohol-related traffic crashes and 13,613 people were killed in crashes involving drunk drivers.
Given the above it's obvious that drunk driving is on the rise and each year we essentially lose a number of people equivalent to good sized town.
Note that she was caught several times drunk on the road. How many times was she equally inebriated and not caught?
Confining Paris to a 45-room mansion with hot & cold running servants is not much of a hardship - she's likely planning freedom parties at her posh residence as we speak.
L. Scott, Chicago, IL
She is a top icon for teenagers. They imitate her, look up to her. What example should be set for youngsters? Paris should take responsibility for the way she conducts herself. Letting her out after a few days does not hit home to anyone. Paris should be a role model and do her time.
Shannah, South Africa,
Any every day American would be sent to jail under the same circumstances.
No every day American would be assigned to house arrest going against judge's orders.
It's wonderful to see how much differently the rich gets treated than the poor unwashed masses.
G, Boston, MA
Does justice does work in this country? I remember the plug being pulled on the human vegitable... it happens everyday to people, but because it became national news, it became a national crisis.
Simply, if the media didn't play such a large role in our everyday lives, we would care less who was in jail and serving their "sentenced" time. I agree that though her sentence was served unfairly (5 days) and unjustly, it is as well true to know that things like this happen everyday, and nobody makes a big deal about it.
It would only be fair to Paris if the next prisoner for a simular offense was released to serve under house arrest received this amount of media coverage.
Who cares?
Steve, Martinsburg, WV
I agree with Scott from Canada. Paris being released had nothing to do with her being white! It most likely had to do with her financial and public status. God forbid she have a breakdown because she actually had to face the consequences of her actions like the rest of us. I highly doubt that spending 40 days confined to a home most of us would pay good money to spend one night in is going to teach Paris anything other than she is above the law.
Monique, Georgia, U.S.
The view that Paris has the real world is so distorted, she believes she is right. She must stay in jail for the entire 45 days so two things can happen: One, she does the time as the rest of us would and two, does not make a mockery of our justice system. If we investigated the Judge, Sheriff and Psychiatrist with as much ferver as we went after Clinton and Monica, we would probable find many questionable bank deposits.
Tom, San Antonio, USA, TX
She had problems with the food in Jail or unable to tolerate it?
This world has tolerated and been exposed to the disfunctional Paris and the entire Hilton Clan for far too long! Both her parents should hide, filled with shame as to what a product they have created! And donate all the wealth to be used and spend to make this world a better place. That should be their punishment for producing Paris!
As to Paris, I only hope she will be immediantly send back to Jail. Not even a question or any debate!
No Hiltons, your wealth for which you never even worked does NOT give you certain privileges when it comes to THE LAW!
GALLAGHER, RUMSON, NJ
So again Paris can't take responsibility for her actions!! The little Princess needs to grow up and act like an adult and do her time with no special privileges.
R, Arvada, CO
Perhaps the Sheriff and the Attorney need to spend time in jail!! Totally wrong to show that type of ignorance towards everyone else. Show Paris what its like to be poor and wanting things and not spoiled rotten!!!
rudy, roswell, nm
ZEE Princess Hilton should seek help in AA, Manditory 5000 meetings for 1 year. She is sick with Alcoholisim. Drink and Drive and you pay the price like anybody else.
Gary, Laguna Hills, CA
Someone needs to remind Rev. Sharpton that the OJ mockery of justice out weighs Miss Hilton's bad behavior.
If the media would agree not to publish or air any further information about Paris this would all go away & we could focus on what's really important e.g. Iraq, Iran, So. Korea, Immigration, the future of SS, etc.
Pattie Hughes, Conyers, GA
No wonder the Muslim nations think the west is morally bankrupt.
This rubs ordinary people's nose in it, as should make Americans hang their heads in shame
mark piazza, Walton on Thames,
It seems fairly straightforward to me: the judges explicit orders were that Miss Priss was to cool off in jail for 23 days and think about her flagrant violation of parole. Its not about driving on a suspended license. Its about disregarding the terms of her parole and giving the finger to the legal system. The judges order stated explicitly that she was NOT TO DO HER TIME UNDER HOUSE ARREST. To violate a judges order is also a crime. Hilton needs to go back to prison and the sheriff who violated the court order needs to be punished. Otherwise, there wll be an outbreak of disregard for the law the likes of which LA has not seen since the Watts riots.
nunez, Eureka, USA / CA
This is the picture perfect example of the difference between the Rich vs. the Poor. You have people who have spent more time in Jail waiting to Go to Court and recieve a sentence than Paris Hilton did so called "doing time". It should not matter "what" economic bracket you are in. My question even on the matter of color is if they are letting Celebs off of the hook; "why did Lil Kim have to do her time"? I just want to know, HOW MUCH DID THE SHERiFF GET PAID? Send anyone who had to do with her release back to Jail with her. She lives in a mansion and you really think that having an ankle tether is punishment? That is a vacation. People are so tired of the racism!!!!!!!!!!!!
Back2Jail, Detroit, Mi
Paris should go back.Just because she is famous and rich it doesn't mean that she shouldn't serve her time her FULL time of 45 days !!!! If it was just some normal person no way would they have got away with what Paris has got away with. She was caught driving twice while banned cause she thought- oh it's ok im famous, ill get away with it,but she didn't.Letting her out from prision is letting her get away with it !!!!! People go into prison to learn a lesson.Mabye it will make her a better person if she just stays in there people will respect her so much more than if she doesn't stay in there......well i know i would think more of her anyway!
Danni, London, Uk
Yes, let's let Princess Paris off, and perhaps the NEXT time she drinks and drives, and she will,( because there clearly isn't a penalty for it if you're in her tax bracket,) we'll all get to watch The Simple Life 16- Where Paris Gets Away With Vehicular Homicide. The genius who decided that she was just far too fragile for the punishments appropriate for the rest of the citizenry, have completely and utterly destroyed the notion that there is a shred of equal justice in this country. Shame on you all, and you should lose your jobs.
Stephanie, Horseheads, NY, USA
Of course, money was the basis for the early release of Ms. Prissy. There wouldn't have been any other ordinary citizen, from a different walk of life, fortunate enough to be entitled to the type of special treatment Ms. Prissy received. To escape the punishment of her crime, reinforces the theory that money can buy you anything including and not limited to freedom. What kind of message or impact will this send to other rich children and young adults in the world. My recommendation is to send her back to JAIL now, before the repercussion of this decision spiral out of control.

Okay...I'm really getting tired of hearing people's out cry for this poppet. Let's face it, the macabre of being in jail does give people a shock ( and rightfully so ). That doesn't excuse or give justification for extream special privilages. she served less than 3 days physically in jai and got credited for 5. [Paris] also refused to eat the prison food, unlike most inmates ( as far a media and movies protray ) who get it stolen from them. I say if she has a 45 day sentance...serve 45 days! it's not like they're aren't people equally remorseful for preforming their ill fated doings, and can't even get parole. Let's stop thinking of her as a celebrity ( which is a whole new topic all together ) and call the foul play. if you're stupid enough to violate probation for having a suspended license TWICE, especially if you're uber wealth and can afford a driver in the car of your chioce, then do the time. All 45 days with no special considerations ( other than the ones formally in place) !
Lindo, Toronto, Canada
cmon now folks.. this is america!! land of getting away with mass murder and making deals!!!
you can do ANYTHING.. as long as you at least pretend to be sorry for what you did.. oh.. and having lots of money helps too.
kel, seattle, u.s
Los Angeles is the murder capital of the universe?? The Colombian metropolis of Medellin has one NINTH of the murders it suffered in 1991 yet still has more than twice as many as the city of angels.
A bit O/T but I couldn't believe that statement.
Horace, London,
I think it is a shameful situation and it embarases me that the most powerful country in America that I live in and love proves to the resst of the world that our legal system can be baught aswell like some of the third world countries out there that we frown down up on as a high class society ITS SHAMEFULL. MAKE THE GIRL PAY HER TIME JUST LIKE ANYBODY ELSE.
Julie Orozco, Salt Lake, UT, U.S.A
I hope I speak for everyone in this situation that "it is pathetic that Paris Hilton is a top story in the United States." I believe Paris needs to serve her sentence and face up to responsibility as all of americans should do. I mean really, what does Paris contribute to society? Please, to all the media, stop reporting on useless information (Paris Hilton and who is dating who)!! I strongly disagree with Rev ALSharpton. In my opinion, this has nothing to do with "color" but the power of money. I think the Rev Al Sharpton is keeping racism alive by believing colored people are still being treated unfair, seriously, that is ignorance.
Michael , windermere, FL
So all you have to do is have a mental breakdown to get out of jail. and I thought the twinkie defense would be the best way to avoid sitting in jail. The judge in this case should throw the book at her and I mean throw the book at her maybe it will knock some sense into to that thing she calls a brain. They should throw her back in for the whole 45 day's of her sentence and no more special treatment. she is making a mockery of our judicial system.
THE BIG CHUCQUITA, carlsbad, CA,
If the American legal system is shallow, then so is the UKs. I have two words for you, Paul: Pete Doherty.

My son got 10 days in jail for driving 1 hour past suspension 1 block from his home and was not under any influence at the time, just on his way home and forgot about it being past midnight. Miss Paris needs to serve her time.
Bev, Mount Carmel, Illinois
Personally, I am disgusted. Paris Hilton wasn't going to have a nervous breakdown. She was having privledged life withdrawls. Refusing to eat the prison food? Oh, that's a good one. How's that any different from her refusing to eat high society food? She is 26 years old. Man up, hunker down, serve your time and most importantly, be an adult! Absolutely pitiful.
Mary, Indianapolis,
Could I say that I expected such a thing happening :) Shame... Prison would have been a good opportunity for her to learn a bit more about life...
Augoustinos Kallergis, Lausanne, Switzerland
she should serve her time that would be the best for her career whatever that is. How can anyone take her seriously and be in the public eye if she does not adhere to rules everyone has to follow.
barbara, Highland, new york usa
Paris should have to serve the sentence as any person would if in violation of the law, in prison. What her problem is now is a real reality show, a Simple Life for sure in a small cell without all the conveniences of home.
The point of prison is to learn that instead of being in that small cell, live a law abiding life and avoid going to jail. This would be a good life lesson.
With confinement to home for jail time now, the next infraction would dictate the same punishment again . . . Home Life.
gibbons, Tampa, FL/USA
Sharpton is a trouble maker, it is none of his business what paris does.maybe he should go to washington and start checking out with what our government gets away with, but no they have too much power so he picks on someone like paris. people in this country have no life if what comsumes them is a rich lady and jail time. he who is without sin cast the first stone.

I say not only should she be put back in jail but if they find out it was just a pay off or as stupid stunt i think she should serve out her 36 month probation behind bars. For one Im tired of hearing about the girl. If any of us did the same thing we would have been locked up and left there to rot. If we didnt eat, well that would be our problem. What kind of punishment is it to send her home to a huge mansion. Let her stay in my apartment for a day, she would beg to go to jail and get free food. Further more, Im so sick of everything turning into racial crap. This has nothing to do with her being white.
krystal, frederick, md
where are the elected and appointed officials backbones located?A little south then where it should be.Money and influence should not be a factor if you break the law.Everyone that breaks the law should pay their debt to society--no exceptions

Race absolutely has a lot to do with it. If it were P. Diddy who violated parole TWICE you better believe he wouldn't be out in 3 days. If any celebrity of color (male or female) pulled the crap that Hilton has done and SAID, no one would tolerate it. Racism?
There are MANY layers of injustice that America is witnessing. This is a perfect example of the racism that's embedded in our culture - subtle to many (who aren't black or hispanic) - yet blatant to those who see it happen everyday and are sick of it. Easy for you to say, Scott from Toronto.
Bellinda, Los Angeles, CA
Everyone here misses the real issue. This all started with Paris Hilton BREAKING THE LAW. Driving drunk is a crime. And it causes many deaths. I was almost killed by a drunk driver myself. It certainly changed my life forever..
This spoiled brat doesn't get the seriousness of her actions. And she spit in the face of all of us who do obey the laws.
Had she gotten in an accident and killed a child because she was driving drunk...would everyone say "Oh poor lil Paris, she was drunk she didn't mean to do it." Or would they excuse her because she has "spoiled brat syndrome?"
Now don't be thinking I am speaking from jealousy. I am not. I am spoiled too. But my social awareness stretches far beyond my pretty nose.
Paris needs to at least serve her time if not in jail, then in a medical ward. And she needs to do so for the full term.
Shame on her parents for raising a spoiled, sense of entitlement daughter.
Kymee, Spokane, Washington
I just have to comment about the ignorant remark Al Sharpton made. Not everything is about race!! It's really amusing how he always pulls the racism card. Isn't that ...um... a bit racist??? I love it how the people who cry out " thats racist" all the time are the ones who seem pretty racist themselves. Get over it!! Your black. She's white. That has nothing to do with it. !!!!!
Victoria, Dallas, GA
Wow.... This is lame...
I know a white male that went to jail. He made it clear that he needed mental help, and when he was ignored, he tried to hang himself in his cell. After almost dying, and bleeding from his eyes, he got sent to a luny bin for a whole three days before BEING SENT BACK TO JAIL.
There wasn't a house arrest option for him. He's in jail right now for violating probation, which is a similar sentance to what Paris has.
If this isn't favoritism, i don't know what is.
Sirami, Homboldt County, CA
RS
First of all, bringing Paris back to court has nothing to do with the judges pride. The City District Attorneys are questioning the actions of the Sheriffs' Dept., who is in charge of prisoners. The fact that Paris was freed was in direct violation to the written court order, and frankly, it smells of interference in the US justice system by someone; probably Paris's mother (read that as her "enabler").
Your understanding of the issue is muddle by your worship of the little brat.
I Say make the brat serve her debt to society as the people have deemed proper.
Mick, TO, California
I think house arrest is a very valuable tool for non-violent offenders. It punishes them without exposing them to the real bad guys (murderers, rapists) and lets them tend to their medical needs. As it is the prison system is overloaded. Why not use house arrest for all non-violent crimes?
KS, New York, NY

Well, she's been sent back to jail to serve out her full term. So I guess you can't buy your way out of a crime, even with the "capitalist attitude predominant in America".
Keith K, Minneapolis, USA
I dont think she should be sent to Jail she a high profile celebrity and will be victimized and will not be treated unlike any other inmate. Its not like she murdered anyone is it? Her sentence helps no-one not even her she is 21 and will make a lot more mistakes, why not sentence her to a community service or to pay a hugh fine in order to help children or some other worthy charity.
R, London, UK
I think that Paris Hilton should be sentenced her full length. There are people all over that get put into jail for the same reason but they don't get off the hook that easy. Who cares if she was having a mental breakdown....she should have thought about what she was doing before she went and drove on a suspended license. I don't care if she is famous or not...no one really likes her anyway so really she is only famous because she is rich. This is just my point of view.

If you have alot of money, and don't like your prison accomodations, all you have to do is sulk in your cell, cry alot and refuse to eat prison food. The nice, nice sheriff of LA county will send you home. What happens if you aren't rich? I'd just like to know?
Gary Menten, Montreal , Canada
It's not a racial issue at all. It's the almighty $$$$$$$$$$$.
Money talks and talks loud. Al Sharpten is right, but the favortism comes from the $$$$$$$$$$$$ not ths skin color.
Black, white, brown, beige, or yellow. We need to get over the racial thing and see the real prejudice. Financial and celebrity stature.
Curtis Wilkinson, Newton, NC
This outrage is crazy. There are a ton of better ways to deal with Paris Hilton than sitting her in a jail cell. Fines are good. Three four days in jail is good. Plus a fine of course. But to be demanding justice from this situation when there are so many areas of LA where you can;t even safely walk down the street doesn;t seem to make good sense to me.
Make her see how the other half has to live. THATS punishment for her.
Kerry, Mississauga, CAN
It is absolutely so ignorant that there are people who think that Paris' release is an injustice. She didn't kill anyone. I think that what people should focus on is how pedos are under house arrest and no one cares, but when Paris is under house arrest a blow up happens. It's ridiculous. People act like they've never driven on a few drinks in their entire lives. Oh, right because North Americans are all such perfect citizens and Paris is an evil creature who's going to destroy the world if she recieves punishment anywhere else but jail. I had forgotten that little flaw about her sorry.
sasha, boston, usa
Ok, So...let me get this straight:
- Disobey the law
- Disobey the law AGAIN
- Disobey the law, yet AGAIN
- Blame me disobeying the law on someone else in my payroll. That didn't work.
- Go to Jail
- Cry a WHOLE LOT.
- Freedom.
So what have I learned? I can do whatever I want in California. If I get punished, all I have to do is cry a lot, and then I can go home. Hooray.
What a freakin' joke!
J, Olive Branch, MS
As a rank and file American, the 15 seconds of my day spent paying attention to the Hilton farce is definitely annoying. What's just as annoying is the US bashing. Yes, our system is not perfect and it is slanted towards the privileged, but we are not alone. To our friends across the pond, I have two words for ya: George Michael.
Cheers!
Average Joe, Huntington Beach, CA
What Paris Hilton problem is she thinks she is beyond the law due to whom she is. This is absurd. If this was joe blow off the street corner would he get to go home and spend time? No let her sweat it out. She is our of control, selfish and needs to drop that nose of hers down so she does not drown if it rains. She is a disgrace to most of us women, I mean most of normal everyday people
Lezah, Leeds,
let justice be done, a BIG fine for violating probation, a filmed documentary about the hazards of drunk driving, etc would be a better sentence
Mark, HOuston, Texas
First of all, GLOBAL WARMING. Secondly, the sentence was alittle too accessive, however she should not have been released for the simple fact that it put a black mark of the American Injustice System and the people who can buy thier way thru life. If it was you, most likely you'd be doing the same thing. I believe she should also have to do community service. That would make her life meaningful and productive to society instead of being a complete waste of space. I agree with Trevor's suggestion that she should be fined a few mil instead of being imprisoned which the general public will have to pay for. And then of course we could be descusing more important matters such as GLOBAL WARMING instead of Paris Hilton "news".
Mic, Fort Worth, TX
LA = Murder Capital. Capitalist attitude. American injustice. Wow. I know that it is fashionable to hate America, but at least we need to get our statistics correct. LA is far from the murder capitat of the universe and in fact their murder rate is going down whereas ours is going up. Now that is scary. Now back to the hating.
PW, London, UK
I'm surprised it took only 5 days , with all the power and money the Hilton clan has I thought it would be 24 hour
stay . The sheriff should be held in contempt and jailed
for his judgement in this matter, this is another blow to the judicial system , about Rev Al Sharpton comments , he was right about it being a double standard . Thats just reality .
Bill, Sarnia, Canada
It is not only Sharpton. The Attorney of California, the Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the Sheriffs Union of LA County, Maria Shriver...and nemerous others are against her being treated as being pompous whining, sploit brat. She should grow up and face up to her responsibilities. Mommy should tell her.....if you do the crime you gonna do the time........plain and simple watson!!
Steven Cooper, San Franciso, San Francisco
The outrage at her early release is justified. Who are these doctors? Are they on some sort of family retainer? To be sure her "condition" is a fabrication to get her out of jail. Her sentence, while high, is part of the bigger picture. Whether she or anyone likes it, being in the public eye is a responsibility. Sickening as it is, this woman is a role model. In my opinion this sentence is about sending a message to all american teens. "Celebutante" behavior will have negative effects on your life. For too long Hilton and her like have shown teenage girls that life is all about the party. This judge said NO to that. She put herself in the spotlight. It's not all fun and games. A sentence is a sentence. She has to serve it.
JP, Seattle, USA
"Shes using this time to reflect on her life, to see what she can do to make the world better and hopefully, in my opinion, to change the attitudes that exist about her among many people,
If she had any kind of PR team they would tell her to suck it up, shut up, take your licks and show her "fans"( almost exclusively young males with internet access) that when you do something wrong there are consequences to be faced.
Send her to GP for the remainder and she will learn more then she has in her entire life.

"Special needs" bull. Paris has always been "special'. It's time she is treated as a common criminal. Jail is not meant to be fun. Lock her up for the full term of her sentence. And fire the $250,000/year sherrif.
Bill, Ocean City, Md, USA
The only people to blame is the MEDIA. The media system is biased. Why is this getting to be news. The media claims she is an airhead but its really the media. Think about it for a sec.

Remember the status of a woman with her eyes blindfolded? Well, she took a peek at Paris, as the scale she once held high, began to tilt - to Paris's favor. Is Justice a joke or what?

So.. Paris was caught driving while under suspension twice..... not once but twice....my understanding that under suspension is under suspension...what is unclear here. Does suspension mean for everyone else and not her..

It's a simple fight between justice and economic influence. As a private investigator in Los Angeles for many years I have watched the power to bring economic resouces to a legal fight have undeniable effect on legal outcomes. Not exactly fair, but it's a fact.
Barry Dow, Los Angeles,
This makes me mad. Money & name is not enough. That should not change what happen. The Law is the Law,Period! I don't think anyone likes jail, but that is the law for drinking & driving. This should open new doors if this happens. You break the Law, you pay the price as the rest of us have too. NO ONE is above the law. This is showing favoritism. She needs to do as anyone else would under the Laws for what she was charged. Is there not a reason this is a Law? Yes, people die !This is why we CAN NOT believe in our own courts. And next time if someone is killed. What then? She goes to Rehab for 30 days next to a pool? Come on! This is a drunk driving charge. She should do the time. If nothing is done this time & next time someone is killed.Explain that to parents of a child killed by a drunk driver. Will they care what your name is as they lay their child to rest? Money can not bring that child back! We have laws that we all live under for reasons. Explain why she is not under the same laws?
Jamie, St. Louis, USA
Anybody who minimizes a drunk driving charge obviously has never been the victim of, or seen, a drunk driving related fatality. I am talking about the drunk driver killing somebody else. You are taking other peoples' lives in your hands if you're wasted and driving.
Why should anybody, regardless of status, be excused from an obviously already lenient punishment? Ms. Hilton had already been granted several slaps on the wrist that, trust me, most people in the US would not receive. Nobody wants to be in jail- the difference here is that the average person does not get released after several days because they basically "really don't like jail". This isn't detention in elementary school.
What good is house arrest when your house is more luxurious than most resort spas? The LA county legal system is already a farce, and the Sheriff who made this call should be in the cell right next to Paris.
Ridiculous.
TaskerFive, NY NY, USA
I have no sympathy for Paris Hilton at all. She has been indulged and spoiled and has never had to face the consequences of her actions. She wouldn't eat the prison food? Then let her go hungry until she will eat the prison food,. Accommodations have already been made for her. I don't think house arrest will help her face herself at all. She needs to complete here entire sentence in jail like any regular violator. If she had been a regular person she wouldn't have been free after violate her probation the first time.
Barbara, Atlanta, GA
She needs to stay in jail, Period.
jeremy, cleveland,
I hope someone checks to see if anyone ever gets as harsh a sentence as Paris for driving on a suspended license. It does not happen. So from now on I expect to see everyone sited for driving on a suspended license sentenced to 45 days in solitary at a jail. (TAXES WILL GO UP) If you want things equal then you all deserve to get the same harsh sentence this judge gave Paris for his own person reasons which we will never know. Remember that we sentence drunk drivers that kill someone to involuntary manslaughter resulting in a few years at most of time served and how many convicted of rape have gotten less than 10 years? PERSPECTIVE FOLKS....driving on a suspended license should never have resulted in more than community service.
Jodi, Shrewsbury, MA
All I know is there are laws and (all) people need to be held accountable. I do not think 45 days in jail is cruel or inhumane. She was caught and charged then had total disregaurd for the court. She was in the same jail as everyone else but the other prisioners complaints and cries do not get them special treatment much less release. Jail is not supposed to be a pleasent place! Hello, it's Jail! I come from a moderate middle class family and I believe that if I did what she did, I would have been hauled off to jail immediately. This is an obvious case of I'm richer than you, I'm prettier than you, I don't think I like jail very much so let me out.
Penny Donnelly, Burlington, WI
She can serve her remaining sentence at her own home if it is x10 of her original sentence. Yes, that is 450 days of house arrest.
ww, NY/NY, US/NY
Where is the justice? This woman is definitely not above the law. Put her back in JAIL. This is unacceptable!
Kathy, mountain view, ca
Back in jail now!!!! Do your time like a grown up. everyone hates jail, its
only 20 days
K McLoughlin, Elmira, NY
i believe this is a ridiculous issue.....Paris hilton needs to shut her mouth and take it....if she wants to be a party/bad girl then she needs to learn that for every action there is a consequence as there is for us all....and if they do let her go then whats that saying to the rest of us? I believe that the sheriff should be charged with contempt for refusing to hold the judge's orders.....i dont know if this is true but if he was bribed with a million dollar donation from the hilton family for his reelection next year then i think he should be removed from his position immediately no ifs, ands, or buts
Spencer Millar, Anchorage, Alaska
I thought the whole point of punishing law breakers, whether murderers or drunk drivers, was to make the consequences of breaking the law so uncomfortable, inconvenient, untenable, etc, etc,,, as to limit the possibility of future offense, or otherwise cause those breaking the law to consider alternative actions in the future.
Lot's of people got into jail sane, and come out changed. Others enter jail with the expectation that the experience will change them for the better. I certainly wouldn't want a drunk heiress, particularly one subject to a nervous breakdown seemingly at the drop of a hat, cruising the highways and byways of our nation in a high powered automobile!
Paris and her family need to cowboy up, sit down and shut up, and thank whatever powers there are that she will emerge none the worse, and perhaps maybe a little more sensitive to her unique position in the world!
Or she may got completely off the rails, and no one will be any the wiser!
Edweirdness, Dallas, Tx
She deserved the punishment. She should be in jail the remaing 44 days . What is the difference between her a the other immates that are lep in prision. If she was sick , the jails have doctors and nurses who can assist her in her medical needs. We are in America where everyone should be treated as equal .
G Haydee, California
haydee, garden grove, ca
OK, so she's on the verge of a nervous breakdown. Has ANYONE thought of placing her in a good Psych hospital for the remainder of her prison term. It might even help her realise that the entire world does NOT revolve around her infantile whims and wishes.
Missmelanie, Malvern,
she should have to do the entire 45 days. why not because she is a Hilton? What a message to send to the youth of america, as long as you have money and notarity you do not have to conform the rules like the rest of us. she is an adult who knew that what she was doing was wrong and she should be taught a lesson. no favoritism for her or any other celebrity they are not above the law.
nkel, cranston, ri
What transformation? She had to spend 5 days in jail? As opposed to 23-45? What good does that do her. It is favoritism, Paris Hilton got out jail because she is rich and famous. She believes she is above the justice system, as do many other wealthy people.
I don't think that race has anything to do with this, why even bring that into the picture? The moral is the same for all races. If you are sentenced and the judge lays our specific guidelines, then you should have to follow them. Not get let out to a mansion.
Why not make an example of her? Maybe the R&F need to see that they can't buy off the system.
H West, Traverse City, USA MI
Please put her back in jail to serve out her sentence. Why should WE the public be punished?!
Jim Stimson, Crowley Lake, CA
I believe they should have kept her in jail and if her condition was such a threat to her well being, put her in the jail infirmary. I do not believe it is a racial issue, it is however, favortism towards the wealthy. Beings she has been allowed to go home, she should be allowed NO STAFF and NO VISITORS, especially not the delivery of baked goods, as we saw on national television yesterday.
Paris is supposedly a role model to young women, what are we teaching them, because you know they are watching her case very closely.
Paris needs to grow up and take her knots!
Liz , Huron, SD, Beadle
This is totally ridiculous... Prissy little air-head gets out because she is becoming psychologically unstable as if all the other inmates in there are lol... Um, who wouldn't lose their mind just a little while being in jail? She only had 45 days to serve.. What a spoiled little brat... I think she should not be able to go home even if on house arrest...Why should she be able to lay up in a comfy bed eating bon-bon's all day while any other citizen of society would have to lay up in a cold cell, hard matress and eating prison food.. Let her do the time like everyone else... Why should she get off and how will she learn from her mistake if she does? Don't we just love the justice system :-)
Vickie, Palm Bay, usa/FL
This is a complete outrage!!! Speaking as a person that has been confined in a jail cell before. A nervous breakdown is exactly what a person goes through in the first 48 hours in a cell. That is when the realization that your liberties that you take for granted on a daily basis, are now gone. Not eating food.....of course you won't eat.......your luxury of getting to eat what you want is gone. No-one likes to be forced to eat what they don't want to. Being placed in this little cell, for most people for an extended period, is to break you down to reality......not tv reality......but REALITY!!! To learn that whomever you are in this country that if you break the law, especially when on PROBATION, you will pay the price for your wrong doing. This little priss should do like anyone else put in that situation and cowboy up and do her time.

Ok, if you have money you can avoid jail in America. That seems to be the case lately. 45 day sentance should be billed at $1,000,000.00 a day. for monitoring her ankle monitor. Her staff should get paid leave and the system should deliver prison food to her home, also she must wear prison issue clothing for the 45 days. a prison cot is what she will be allowed to sleep on and no pool privlages.
Now lets see if she has a nervous breakdown at home.

I see that her medical condition didnt stop her
dragging herself from her sick bed to attend the
MTV Movie awards the same day she went in.
Trippy, Cambridge,
She should be sent back to serve her meager 45 days in FULL. If she wants to play the "bad girl" then pay the price for errors. JUST LIKE ANYONE ELSE. How many newly incarcerated individuals are forced to endure the mental challenge of being confined to a 'small space' without the POSSIBILITY of release after two/three days. DUE to their mental state. That is complete ignorance. It should not be allowed, not even contemplated. She got off easy, to begin with. Others would have received a much heavier sentence.

I really have to comment on Al Sharpton's statement. While I agree with his remark about economic favouritism bringing race into the picture had no justification execpt of course that it was Sharpton making the comment. Not once has anyone else suggested that Hilton is getting off easy because she's white. Had it been a black woman going to jail i'm sure the good Reverend would be the first to wave the "cruel and unusual punishment" flag. Sometimes Al, it isn't about race and it's alright to have a non-racial opinion.

Being sent to the slammer was the best thing that ever happened to
Paris Hiltons life to date. One day she'll thank that Judge and realize he probably saved her life. So lets not spoil her transformation.

Any one who read behind this and other story's would see that Paris Hilton has some problems, and maybe drink dependency issues. If she had been Jo blogs from the street more than likely she would have been sentenced to house arrest . I feel the judge in this case just wanted to make an example of her, and hauling her back into court is not about justice but more about his own pride. We talk about a short sharp shock , three hours in Jail let alone 3 days would be enough for most people to take stock . 45 days was over the top. House arrest is no picnic, she wont have the freedom to go out and about shopping, partying socializing etc . Try staying inside your own home how comfortable it is without the freedom of choice. I say leave the woman alone, let her stay under house arrest then move on and get on with her life . we all make mistakes she has served some time and by all accounts didn't enjoy the experience .now its time to take her off the front page and say enough is enough.

In my day Paris would have been taken down the Somme and forced to go over the top, with only half a ration of coal and a pack of woodbines for lunch. Once again - its one rule for loose heiresses of hotel empires and another for the rest of us.

These people and this country needs prayer. Wouldn't it be a tragedy to spen eternity in a lake of fire forever. Give it a thought. Wake up America!

A bent psychiatrist, a bent sheriff, white trash that has plenty of geld: they are the ingredients for manipulating US justice! This absurd distortion of justice happens regardless of whether the criminal is black, white or a Heinz 57 mixture. It's worth checking the financial status of the Sheriff before and after he released the tart.

Lets get a grip, Daddy's girl had this planned all along, I mean PLEASE!?! If this was ANYONE else it'd be shut up and put up but cos it "Paris" she gets released, what if she stole or attacked someone, what then, a sentence is a sentence regardless!!
Natalie, Warrington, England
As per the law she has to make her due time in Jail. As ''normal'' civilian would do. We have a good example of favoritism in America. If it would be a ''normal'' person breaking down, what would happen? Well you would stay in Jail.
Francis Gagnon, Saratoga Spring, USA
They say she's at the verge of mental breakdown? Is that not what prison is meant to do? Break you down, change your ways, make you remember a rotten place and burn into your head the absolute need to never break the law again. You do the crime, You do the Time, that's all there is to it! What do these people expect? It's not like daddy owns the prison system, because only then can he run it like a hotel.

At least the Americans only ankle tag prisoners who are a minimum threat to their society. We ankle tag terrorists and killers but jail old ladies for not paying council taxes. Who is right?
David Thijm, Stourbridge, UK
This is about a drunk driving charge. Los Angeles is the murder capital of the universe. Perhaps if Rocky Delgadillo knew where his priorities were - and if Los Angeles legal system didn't think its was part of the entertainment industry - and the Rev. Al Sharpton didn't want to make a point about race - and every Tom, Dick and Bubba Junior attorney in LA didn't leap around like ballet dancers hoping to get their pictures in the paper - perhaps, just perhaps, LA might become habitable. Your chances of being killed by a drunk Paris Hilton are negligible. Your chances of being killed by half the rest of the population of LA are very high. Rocky Delgadillo might like to 'direct his criminal branch' to where it might do some good, instead of wasting his time and the city's resources with this ludicrous posturing.

It was absurd to jail her anyway. It makes sense to fine her a few million dollars which would help society much more. She has access to a fortune, so take her money.
Trevor, westcliff,
Oh, why not leave her under house arrestbut make it a condition that her staff has to stay at least 100 yards away. Can she even boil water?
Sam, Los Angeles, USA
Absolutely disgusting, exposes how shallow the american legal system is, The capitalist attitude predominant in America shows you can buy everything no matter the crime. Influence Pays!
paul, Lee on Solent, Britain
Besides the obvious unfairness regarding her release, and Hilton not paying her dues, she's only going to go back on the roads and do it all over again with possibly greater harm to the public. With Hilton as precedent, there's no reason for the rest of the Hollywood elite to worry about their reckless behavior.
