Sir Paul McCartney and Heather Mills will try to agree a divorce deal this week at a secret hearing before a High Court judge.
The estranged couple and their lawyers will attend a one-day hearing at a location that has been moved out of the Royal Courts of Justice to avoid the media.
The aim of the hearing before Mr Justice Coleridge on Wednesday or Thursday is to agree a financial settlement and avoid the dispute going to a costly and public hearing. The venue is thought to be within a mile of the Royal Courts of Justice in The Strand.
If successful, Ms Mills could walk away with a settlement worth somewhere between £30 million to £50 million, made up of a lump sum plus annual payments for the couple’s daughter, Beatrice. The hearing involves a special procedure that has applied to all disputes over money arising from divorce since 2004.
All offers already made are laid on the table and the judge then indicates what he thinks a court would order, within a range of figures, were the couple not to reach agreement between themselves. It is believed that Sir Paul has offered in the region of £20 million and that Ms Mills is insisting on a figure of nearer £50 million.
Family lawyers speculate that the appropriate settlement range in this case is £25 million to £30 million. But Sir Paul may pay much more to avoid the unpleasantness of allegations being aired in public.
One source said: “This case ought to settle. It is absolutely straightforward.”

Once the money arrives in Ms. Mill's bank account the world will know the true person she is. The proof will be in the pudding as we see if she gives the money to charity as she so adamantly professed she would when they first separated. She would gain much needed respect and admiration if she does. If she doesn't then we'll all know that what most of us have thought of her all along is true. It will be a proven fact then!

What's the big deal here, Paul is a big boy, Heather was known around town as looking for a rich dummy and she found one. No excuses for Paul he's been around the block. Time to anti up sucker! Reminds me of the old adage, be careful what you wish for, you may just get it!
evienita, Charlotte, USA
I remember when the relationship blew up. There were reports that Paul left and went to France after Heather mocked him for the poor reception of "Chaos and Creation". He had enough of her nastiness. She had been quoted "I wish people would treat him differently. Everyone worships him as some kind of god or something". The woman never appreciated the man's achievements and was never a Beatles fan. My impression is that she never really cared for him that much.
Having Beatrice was her guarantee that she would ride the money train all the way through life. I think she is evil enough to have abused McCartney's good side long enough that he finally said "enough, pay her off and get rid of her". She has had her hand out for what? nearly 18 months now and we have seen reports of "settlement hearings" a dozen times.
This wrangling will probably go on another year. She seems Hell bent to squeeze every last shilling out the man's pocket she can get.

Heather Mills should now go into the dictionary under the
description for "golddigger". Not once during this ordeal
has she shown any interest in anyone other than herself
and money. She has a child and Bea and Paul seem
to be the only ones suffering. Paul should ask for custody
of Bea as he is the better parent. Also Bea will find out
someday what Heather said about her father. My question
to Paul would be why pay Heather isn't it just blackmail.
Fight her even when Bea finds out who do you think she
will believe?

Liz, Mission, KS USA
Golddigger is the first word that comes to mind. She needs to get a job and stop living off lies and other people. She had nothing to do with him earning that money. He will take care of his child. Heather has shown who she really is by buying up houses that are bigger than Paul's and renting a house for one month on Long Island for $250,000 this past August. It seems her favorite charity is herself.
She like to portray herself as strong and independent when she clearly is a con artist. She is an insult to women.
I have no idea why any rich man would marry. It can't be worth it. If she gets a large amount for 4 years the courts are effectively making golddigging a valid profession.
Barbara Siler, Albany, NY USA
The grief that results from traumatic events in one's life may potentially cause anyone to possess poor judgement.
No one is perfect and everyone make mistakes. Both parties have clearly done so.
A reasonable amount and visitation should be arranged for Beatrice; and both Ms. Mills and Mr. McCartney should get on with their individual lives.
A. Johnson, Conroe, Texas
Am I the only one to think that this kind of "settlement" by the Nouveau Riche degrades the institute of marriage to a kind of crypto-prostitution?
Ed Zuiderwijk, Cambridge, UK
Mills said she would take no money when she left the marriage. She said on Larry King, she would leave the marriage the way she came in. While she should have something, even the 20 million Sir Paul said he would give, shows one thing. She is the gold digger she always protested she wasn't. She said she was an independent woman and supports herself, another lie. Have some self respect woman and take a small amount.
D. Cording, WPB, FL, USA
For 4 years of marriage I think 20 million would be sufficient. And of course the money should be for Beatrice. Heather should be able to support herself.
