SMALL FRY
Do famous people eat? That was the question I asked myself on the way to a dinner at Harvey Nichols for the launch of the Olsen twins’ new fashion line, The Row. The concern was that dinner would be insubstantial: the Olsens are so miniature, I was half expecting them to do portions as tiny as their clothes. I was right to worry. We were served slivers of tomato with herbs, then a cube of organic Shetland cod, new potatoes and broad beans, followed by a thimbleful of jelly and ice cream. I was still peckish afterwards, as was the 6ft 5in man to my right. Outside on the terrace, Lily Cole, Blake Fielder-Civil and Mary-Kate were done with dinner and had gone back to smoking fags. Amy Winehouse arrived just as dinner was over, looking magnificently thunderous. Poor love was fretting that Lily and Blake had been flirting, but envy replaced sympathy when I learnt the lucky girl had grabbed a Maccy D’s on the way.
IS IT OKAY TO...
Wear a New Era baseball cap? Oh, look, there’s that Lily Allen in one. In fact, those noddy hats are everywhere. Who knew that, one day, they’d become shorthand for cool? Worn undecorated and oversized by urban boys, and neon and fitted with the visor tipped skywards by nu-ravers and indie kids, they’re the obvious remedy for a bad hair day. The question is, though: can just anyone wear one? Instinct says nooo, but John, a twee indie kid who runs a Bethnal Green club night called Ghost Face, says yes. “New Era caps run the risk of looking faddy, but not if you don’t take yourself too seriously. You have to wear it in a knowing way. Not snarky knowing, just with a touch of irony. There’s no age limit. In fact, the more inappropriate, the better.” He’s talking to you, Mr Hedgefunder.
IF THE SHOE DOESN’T FIT
It’s time for a pair of proper ladies’ shoes, so I hoof it over to Manolo’s place in Chelsea. There in the window are the latest treasures from Mr Blahnik’s collaboration with Christopher Kane: 495 quids’ worth of acid-green patent-leather sandal with a heel so high we’re talking orgasm foot*. Disaster – there’s nothing in my size. I try the size below. My outer toes may never forgive me. I call Christopher. Should I buy them or not? “Och, I’ve done it many times,” Christopher says. “Sometimes you need to. You just make your feet fit the shoe and get cabs.”
SEX ZINE
It was London art week last week, but in Dalston the latest issue of the fanzine PiX – a poster featuring a Joy of Sex-style drawing by YBAs Sue Webster and Tim Noble of themselves mid-coitus, surrounded by Siouxsie Sioux album covers – was the big topic. One enthusiastic reader of PiX – which is co-edited by Gareth Pugh’s flatmate, Hanna, and the DJ Princess Julia – was seen wearing it as a cape (www.myspace.com/thepixzine).
