For the aristocrats of British theatre, the wedding of the actress Billie Piper to Laurence Fox was a distinctly unshowy.
The invited cast of family and fellow actors at St Mary’s church in the village of Easebourne, West Sussex, numbered hardly more than 50. Perhaps those great patriarchs of the stage: Edward Fox, and the groom’s father, James, were disappointed at the lack of fanfare. Villagers, who turned out in force to watch from behind barricades certainly felt a little let down. The groom, best known for his role alongside Kevin Whately’s Lewis in the series that followed on from Inspector Morse, arrived 45 minutes early. He seemed a little nervous – the best man and ushers dragged him off to a local pub – after which he said he felt “very good” about the day ahead.
Ms Piper arrived with five minutes to spare, her ivory dress covered in a matching black coat with large collars.
The bridesmaids wore black capes over dark dresses with purple skirts – beneath grey clouds on the last day of the year, the effect was mildly gothic.
Rosemary Smith, a watching housewife, was not impressed. “She looked very ordinary,” she said. “I had expected her to be a bit more glamorous. She didn’t have anything in her hair – no flowers, no nothing.”
For other villagers, disappointment in the dress was more than made up for by the celebrities: there was Kevin Whately, there were James, Edward and Emilia Fox, there was the bride’s former husband, the broadcaster Chris Evans, and, according to one determined spotter, “that woman out of Coronation Street”.
There was, however, one man who towered over all of these, and even the wedding itself in terms of the feverish excitement he generated. Excited girls clambered on cars, and on the shoulders of their fathers, mobile phone cameras poised, hoping for a glimpse of The Doctor, otherwise known as the actor David Tennant.
Tennant starred alongside Ms Piper in Doctor Who, the series that transformed her from a pop star into a household name.

I was there!! She looked very pretty, but i mainly went along to see David Tennant. He is just as gorgeous in real life, and massively tall too! Made my year!
Rosie, Midhurst,
i saw the photos & thought they looked very simple but extremely elegant. Billie & her groom looked lovely, & the whole event looked like it was exactly what THEY wanted. Good luck to them.
yveie, Worcestershire,
In answer to Small Dog, Yes, we have proof readers, but in English. There was nothing gramatically wrong with the statement. Nor is it untrue in the UK.
However, if you disagree with the sentiment, then maybe you should just say so.

Billie seems such a wonderful and likable character, and I wish them both all of the best. What is everybody going on about her hair for? It looked fine to me and it is up to her what she wants to wear. She looked stunning to me!

I live in the house next door to St Mary's Church Easebourne, and I am a member of the church choir. We were honoured to sing for Billie and Lawrence's wedding yesterday. As we processed up the aisle, Lawrence, looking a tiny bit nervous as he waited for his bride, beamed at us and thanked us for coming. My position in the choir of gave me the very best view of the couple. Billie looked stunningly beautiful in her simple silk wedding gown - low cut and backless, with a short train. The couple seem very much in love and held hands throughout the service. Our vicar, Derek, gave a lovely address, and even brought a few laughs from the Fox family in the front rows.
They seem a lovely couple and we wish them all the best, and hope they will be happy in our village.

Nobody seems to have mentioned how miserable she looked. She could barely conjure up a smile!
Chrissy, Halifax, England
Billie looked beautiful yesterday as my children and i saw and it was all worth the wait i hope billie is very happy and i thought it was a nice touch inviting chris evans too but best of all was seeingf david tennant.
Tanya Rowe, arundel, england
i am very pleased for Billie and i hope she will have a long and hapy mariage. I also think that if Billie chooses to wear nothing in her hair then she is free to do that so people should stop pointing things out.
Alice, manchester, England
Sounds like another Soap Opera Wedding ! Why is this classed as "News" ? Yawn..........................................
