Amy Winehouse visited a private rehabilitation clinic in London yesterday after she was caught on video apparently smoking crack. The singer will be hoping that the footage has not ruined her chances of conquering America, where her album Back to Black has sold 1.3 million copies.
Her record company, Island, part of Universal Music, is ready to abandon its American campaign to promote her. “It may be time to draw a line under it all and move on,” said Nick Gatfield, the label’s president.
She had been invited to perform at the Grammys, the US music industry’s most glamorous night, in Los Angeles next month. She is nominated for six awards, including Album of the Year.
Her well-publicised drug problems hampered her request for a visa. Winehouse, who cancelled her last US tour after an overdose, made a personal appeal for a visa after being convicted of cannabis possession in Norway. It is believed that the US authorities wanted evidence that she was drug-free before allowing her in.
Mr Gatfield described Winehouse as a hugely talented artist and said that she would be given time to deal with her problems. He said that she had America at her feet. “It’s a reflection of her status [in the US] that when you flick through the TV coverage [of the Grammys] it’s her image they use.” However, he added that there would be “absolutely no pressure from the company” to force her back to work. Universal Music said that it was deeply upset and disappointed about the latest revelations but would give her its full support.
Winehouse is due to appear at an awards ceremony in Cannes this Saturday alongside Kylie Minogue, Céline Dion and Rihanna. She pulled out of a number of UK concerts before Christmas.
Edward House is an outpatients department of the Capio Nightingale Hospital, which is known for rehabilitating drug users. The 24-year-old singer arrived at 4.45pm accompanied by her father, Mitch, a London taxi driver, and stayed for two hours. Wearing a dark top and pencil skirt, she appeared to be in good spirits and had returned to her black beehive hairstyle after a brief experiment as a bottle-blonde.
Pete Doherty, the Babyshambles singer and Winehouse’s friend, checked into the Nightingale Hospital for drug rehabilitation treatment last year.
Last night, Winehouse’s spokesperson insisted: “Amy has not been admitted into rehab. She has regular appointments with a doctor at the Nightingale Hospital and she will not be staying overnight. She is in good spirits and walking tall.”
Footage published in The Sun appeared to show Winehouse inhaling fumes from a crack pipe after a reported drug binge in which she was said to have snorted Ecstasy and cocaine and admitted to taking six Valium tablets. The video was said to have been filmed during a party at Winehouse’s home in East London in the early hours of last Friday, shortly before she attended a court hearing of her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil. He is awaiting trial on charges of assault and conspiracy to pervert the course of justice.
According to The Sun, Winehouse snorted powdered Ecstasy and cocaine before heading to her bedroom, where she inhaled crack in front of her wedding photo. When friends are heard in the video to go out with them, she replies: “I’d be useless to you because I’ve had about six Valium.”
Police said that they were unable to take action unless they received a complaint that a suspected criminal offence had been committed.

Not one asks why this girl went over the edge into drugs. Google [ winehouse headlock ] and read carefully. Cocaine + Ecstasy + Ketamine. Check USA CDC info for illegal uses of ketamine. Please, spare this girl hatred. "Whatever you do unto the least of these, you do unto me."
Tough Is Not Enough, New York, USA
I can relate to what she's going through, drugs seem like any only answer for her and she is trapped. Yes, she can recover, only if and when she is ready to take on the hard and painfull journey recovery entails. There's hope for her, well, unless she overdoses and dies like a friend did last month. Media should stop portraying these young artists debauchery as the new measure of success. Addiction is a real and fatal disease. Many people suffer at its peril, not so famouos, but still living in despair. She's crying out for help...someone take the heed and stop glamourising her drug induced existence!

How little she loves herself

She might be a nice person. Hope she lives long enough for her to find out. I was once like her. It is clever when you are young, when you get older, you're more of a slob, and you must have a minder, and you think you are charming but sadly you no longer are.

One of the most overrated, hyped artists i have ever had to work with. She should just get a permanent room at the rehab facility.
Lisa Linder, New York, USA
so sad. she is so talented and wasting the opportunities that are before her.......
Dee, bartlett, tn
Too bad,a lot of talent that appears to be going to waste.
I hope she wises up before it's too late.
I hope she gets healthy before she ends up alone and dead.

You cannot justify drug and alcohol addiction on the grounds that it produces greatness in a few. Those who see them as role models and follow them into an addiction they cannot get free from are victims of the celebrity worship culture.
it's a shame that some many of our top artists are surrounded by the sycophants who will get them anything they ask for, or even push them into the destructive drugs and alcohol culture. Fortunatly for many of them, they can afford the high prices the clinics charge to help them 'dry out'. It's about time our celebrities took thier job seriously and learned to say no!
Ron, Milton Keynes, Bucks
Why glamourize this selfish and not too pretty singer. She's an adult and knows the consequences of her actions. Leave her alone and see what happens.
Hamad Lone, London, England
pop music is not great artistry. just great marketing. "drugs" and "rebellion" are part of the marketing strategy of pop music
one day someone will write on the cultural rip off that is pop music
ian, london,
video evidence and a confession and the police say they can not act? That is more evidence than is used to convict motorists!! Must be the Met ....and they feel the need to protest for more money? For what? For doing nothing !

Its only through suffering that great art emerges. Go Amy. We need more people suffering if we are to achieve Purnell's dream of a artistic renaissance.

How about Dave Gahan? His comeback from heroin produced some of the finest music of his career. It humbled him and matured him dramatically.

Yeah she's a good singer. Her song "No, no no" is very catch, and she's totally sexy.
At the end of the day, sadly, she's an immature brat. She ain't no role model or hero, and she doesn't deserve attention and respect. She is hurting people.
Adrian, Seattle area, US of A
Completely recovered musical artists include Stevie Ray Vaughan (until his tragic death in a helicopter crash), and Steve Earle (who portrays a recovered junkie brilliantly in HBO's "The Wire"). These were just the first two to pop into my head. Ryan Adams got clean, but we will see if he can stay that way.
The way is difficult, but it can be done. Hope Amy pulls through. I am not a fan, but from what I have heard she does have considerable talent.
HarryO, Seattle, WA
Answer to Martin--1)Eric Clapton 2)Marianne Faithfull 3) Stevie Ray Vaughan. There are others, too.
She can get it together if she wants to.
Alice, USA,
It's all downhill for Amy from here. Not to be gloom, but can you name an artist, who battled with drugs, and completely recovered?
Only the good die young.
My heart goes out to the families drugs has destroyed through the ages.
