In a life not characterised by its predictability, Kate Moss does at least seem, with amazing regularity, to get engaged to whoever she happens to be dating. The latest lucky man, if the tabloids are to be believed, is Jamie Hince, 39, guitarist with the Kills.
The fact that he is a self-proclaimed introvert vegan from Andover should not fool us into thinking she has changed her type. Hince is also a chain smoker and is allegedly not averse to a party. That he was once voted one of the worlds top ten sexiest vegetarians, and has an avowed fondness for toast, was not, apparently, a deal-breaker.
Reports of this particular romance first surfaced last September, shortly after the end of her relationship with the troubled Pete Doherty. “Jamie looked like it could have been a bit of a rebound thing at first," one of Moss's friends is reported as saying, “but now it seems like it's the real deal.”
Hince's partner in the Kills, Alison Mosshart, is allegedly less impressed. She and Hince are variously reported to have met eight years ago at a party, in a London squat, and when they were staying in neighbouring hotel rooms. We must live with the fact that we may never know the truth. But for the uninitiated, their music is more likely to be heard in chic fashion circles than Kentish Town dives, and their clothes are more likely to be limited-edition designer than Camden Market.
Mosshart once said that she and Hince grew up in unmusical households, listening to the radio late at night. Both are still very much nightbirds, which would seem to happily coincide with Moss's habits, and they have spent a fair few nights recently recording their third album in a remote town in Michigan.
“We bonded over Edie Sedgwick, Hunter S.Thompson, Dada, Laurence Ferlinghetti novels, coffee, wine, cigarettes and toast,” Mosshart said about Hince. Presumably Kate Moss shares at least some of those interests, though it would be churlish to speculate as to which. And in further proof that the world of celebrity is a small one, Mosshart once dated Jefferson Hack, the father of Kate Moss's four-year-old daughter. Do keep up.
As for the prospects for Hince, a friend of Moss once said that getting engaged was her way of showing she was serious about someone. The rich are indeed different.
“It's pretty insane the way gossip is such an incredible thing now,” Hince moaned recently. “The way there used to be secrets, and people used to be able to build myths and have a private life. It's not the case any more.”
Someone should tell him that without Kate Moss, fiancée or not, Hince could build as many myths and have as private a life as he likes. Or they could just stay in.
