Rowan Atkinson has finally admitted what comedy connoisseurs have been bemoaning for years: the Mr Bean films were ghastly. The actor voiced his dissatisfaction at the weekend in advance of his appearance next year in Oliver! at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, as Fagin, Dickens’s villainous advocate of “picking a pocket or two”.
“My problem is that, although the films have undoubtedly been commercially successful . . . an awful lot of what we have done has not been good film-making,” he said. “I find it frustrating that, apart from Four Weddings and a Funeral, I have yet to be involved in a film of which I am totally proud.”
One hopes that his theatrical debut in the West End is closer to his small-screen triumphs as Edmund Blackadder than his erratic big-screen career, which has ranged from an inept would-be spy in Never Say Never Again to a bumbling actual spy in Johnny English.

Mr. Bean is the funniest thing I have ever seen. As "Enrico Pollini" in the movie Rat Race, Mr. Atkinson was remarkable playing an italian in a leisure suit. He deserved an Acadamy Award for that role. Perhaps Rowan Atkinson is to the U.S. as Jerry lewis is to France.

I would have to tell you that from my standpoint that "Mr Bean" follows in a great line of physical comedians, such as Abbott and Costello, the Three Stooges and Charlie Chaplin who have been loved by most and hated by some. I, for one, enjoy this type of humor hoping that Atkinson is Bean for years

The Mr Bean films actually brought a great deal of pleasure to my children, who were great fans when they were growing up. Why is it necessary to diminish the enjoyment they and, I dare say, other children derived, by making such self critical remarks?
Andreas, London,
Haha, Chris you are so right - Benny and Bean are massive in France too. Python, Blackadder, Porridge, Fawlty Towers - no one has ever heard of them.

Sadly, here in Spain, Mr Bean remains one of Britain's most popular exports. But they're still mad keen on Benny Hill too.
