There were kings and queens, singers and comedians, and a toast from his sons: it was a glittering celebration for the Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace last night, the eve of his 60th birthday.
The Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duchess of Cornwall and princes William and Harry joined 400 guests at a black-tie reception, as European royalty and supporters of his charitable organisations gathered with celebrities such as Dame Shirley Bassey, Felicity Kendal and Griff Rhys Jones for the first of the Prince’s two birthday parties. Among the royals attending were King Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden and Queen Sonja of Norway.
Princes William and Harry paid tribute to their father as “an inspiration to us and so many others” and joked that they would now be having a stairlift installed at Highgrove.
Supporters of Prince Charles’s charitable work included Dame Julia Cleverdon, until recently chief executive of Business in the Community, and the environmentalist Jonathon Porritt. The Philharmonia Orchestra, of which the Prince is patron, performed Elgar and Wagner.
Today the Prince will have a working birthday, with a visit to the East End for The Prince’s Trust Youth Week.
