ANYTHING THEY CAN DO . . .
Let’s not use this Mother’s Day as another opportunity to list all the things women do better than men. Oh, okay then — let’s. “I have to say it would be multitasking — men are really good at doing one thing properly and then finishing,” said Jemma Kidd at a fragrant cocktail party given by Diane von Furstenberg in aid of the women’s charity Vital Voices (the room was an ocean of DVF wrap dresses and grey Chanel quilted bags). “I can do, say, five things at a time,” Kidd says. “Talk on the phone, watch a movie, text, e-mail and surf the internet.” The writer and fashion plate Plum Sykes — whose mother counselled her to work really hard at school — trumped her. “Being intimidating,” she said. “If I want to use my femininity to get something from a man, I’ll wear very high heels. Not to arouse him sexually. But I’m so tall — I’m 6ft 2in in heels — that it works a treat.” Yikes.
PARTY SPIRIT
Are British girls tougher than the rest? To Paris, and a party put on by the Soho and Tribeca Grand hotels, at Régine nightclub. So which nationality can party the hardest and still look paparazzi-perfect six hours later? There was the Russian Dasha Zhukova, right, supping vodka and doing her trademark wiggle, and all with meetings for Pop magazine the next day. There was Milla Jovovich, representing the Ukraine, dancing on a couch, with a baby and nanny back at the hotel. And there was Lily Donaldson, far right, holding it down for the Brits, sipping Jack Daniel’s out of a bottle — and still looking a treat the day after on the Stella McCartney catwalk. I could kill her.
A CULT IS BORN
A new rock’n’roll haircut has reached our shores, and it’s called “the Jenny” (see above), as modelled by the 15-year-old actress Taylor Momsen, aka Jenny Humphrey in Gossip Girl. Momsen debuted her new shag over here — predicted by some to be “the Rachel” of this decade — in last week’s episode. The Yanks are ahead in the series, and it is already a “hair cult” in New York. What most people don’t know is that Momsen had originally requested a cut like Joan Jett, but panicked when she realised she hadn’t specified which Joan era. Fred Vanderbunt, her hairstylist and friend, told her to “sit still and shut the f*** up”. From such suffering are great haircuts made.
SOUL FOOD
Friends in California are touting a retail trend for these new, more soulful times: spiritual shopping. It was born only a fortnight ago at a party thrown by the recently bankrupted LA boutique owner Tracey Ross, at the majestic home of the beauty-care empress Normandie Keith. Melanie Griffith (pictured with Ross, below) was there, as were Rob and Sheryl Lowe. “It was a no-Manolos kind of day,” Ross told me. Apprently there was a psychic healer, superfood drinks, plus floral tributes by the celebrity florist — “he does everyone” — Eric Buterbaugh. I must say, it does sound more fun than the lingerie department of John Lewis on a Saturday afternoon.
