What do you expect to see when you visit Soho? Sex shops, sex shows, buffed-up young men strolling the streets, a thousand pairs of eyes ogling from the windows of the coffee shops lining Old Compton Street. Babies don't tend to feature much.

Yet the gay high street shop Prowler has taken the slightly unexpected step of introducing baby clothes to its flagship store, right in the heart of Soho - perhaps recognising that gay men and women are as keen to pass on their genes as the rest of us. Visitors might be surprised to find, among the shop's usual stock of gay magazines, sex toys and teeny-weeny tackle-toting underpants, an exclusive range of babywear (colours include pink) bearing slogans such as “My parents are big gay liberals”. According to a recent reader survey from Gay Times and DIVA (a leading lesbian magazine), 11 per cent of gay men are fathers and 20 per cent of lesbians are mothers. I'll bet they have some seriously well-turned-out toddlers - no sick-coated fleeces or synthetics for them.
