It is a brave man, woman or social networking site that dares provoke the breast-feeding lobby, one of the most exasperating groups of people on the planet. I should know: I’ve been a breast-feeding mother, twice. Two six-month stints in full lactation can definitely mess with a person’s head.

I suspect that Facebook’s decision to take down all pictures of its members breast-feeding was driven not by some sinister powdered milk plot but by a diligent, if cack-handed, attempt to remove potentially provocative imagery.

Indecency is, of course, in the eye of the beholder. For the majority of Facebook users these pictures will seem completely innocuous, but there are those for whom they will not be. This could be because they belong to a different culture or era and are therefore less comfortable with images of naked female flesh; or because they are teenage boys, and want their smutty little wrists slapping.

The closeness of mother and child is a beautiful thing; but like all great loves it does not necessarily translate to a wider audience.
