Pete plays guitar, eats special sweets and falls over a lot. Pete met a famous girl called Kate and the pair went ballistic on Class A drugs.
The cautionary tale of Pete Doherty has been turned into an illustrated children’s book that is becoming a Christmas bestseller.
A Boy Called Pete details the rise to fame of the notorious rock singer who “sings songs and wears hats”. But his predilection for “mind-bending drugs” means that Pete and his friend Kate are “always getting into trouble”.
The book claims to be a moral story and warns children that “Class A drugs are not very good for you. They make you smelly and a bit untidy-looking.” Pete finds that he is no longer famous for singing songs and is made to stay in “a very big house with high walls” because “London has lots of rules and lots of authority”.
Like the protagonist of Hilaire Belloc’s tales, Pete comes to a sticky end. But readers should feel sorry for him “because once upon a time he was a very clever and handsome man”.
The book is published by Popjustice, a website that has become the music industry’s prime forum for gossip and merciless lampooning.
Doherty is joined on the shelves by A Girl Called Britney, “a perfect popstar and a perfect mummy”, as well as illustrated tomes on Elton John (who “likes to get married”) and Michael Jackson.
Peter Robinson, founder of Popjustice and author of the books, said that Doherty was a perfect subject for treatment, because “his life is like a sitcom. You don’t know when he will get arrested next.” He said the story was “a warning to young readers”.
A spokesman for HMV said: “The Popjustice books have a real quirky appeal and they are going to end up in a lot of Christmas stockings. There are five Doherty biographies out, so there is a danger of ‘Pete fatigue’ come Boxing Day.”
Mr Robinson has signed a deal to turn the books, which sell for £4, into an animated TV series. Robbie Williams is said to have ordered a copy of the illustrated book devoted to him, and to have been was impressed.
Kate Moss may be less impressed with her starring role in the Doherty book. David Whittle, the illustrator, re-creates a “special photograph” of the model that “some people claimed was of her snorting a massive line of cocaine up her hooter. Ouch!” As well as detailing the pop star’s colourful past, the book features a series of child-like illustrations which some may argue do not do justice to his handsome, if not gaunt features. They have him eating chocolates, holding up a degree, sailing a vessel dressed as a pirate, being chased by the police and throwing a guitar in a bin. It also features a freshly dug grave with RIP Pete on it.
Mr Blanco had been due to take the lead role this week in a production of the Dario Fo play Accidental Death of an Anarchist, about a man who falls to his death in a police station.
Staff at The George Tavern, Stepney, where the production was to be staged, marked the young actor’s death by chalking “Mark Blanco RIP” on the blackboard outside the pub.
The bar manager said: “He was in here every day and was the heart and soul of the place.”
Doherty and his girlfriend, the model Kate Moss, frequented the pub and the singer was a guest at the party where Mr Blanco died. Paul Roundhill, who hosted the party and described himself as Doherty’s literary agent, said that Mr Blanco had arrived in an agitated state. He said: “He had spoken to Pete and invited him to the play and he was terribly excited that he had talked to someone as famous as Pete about that. Nobody knows how he fell.”
