So, how do you feel about wearing a flip-flop that has the potential to make your bum smaller and your legs leaner?
I thought so. Me, too. The concept (and the shoe itself) has been dreamt up by a woman who specialises in coming up with things we all want, but just didn't know it. Marcia Kilgore is the former personal trainer who came up with the concept of Bliss the Mecca for spa hoppers on both sides of the Atlantic and then surpassed herself with her next project, the gloriously tabloidish "Soap and Glory" skincare range.
Kilgore created Fitflops in response to her own needs. "I never have the time to go to the gym," she says, "so I thought, wouldn't it be great if you could get an MBT sort of flip-flop that you could wear in the summer, that exercises your legs while you walk to the office?" Kilgore refers, of course, to the monumentally ugly (though some say equally effective) Masai Barefoot Technology training shoe, developed by Swiss Engineer Karl Muller.
MBT trainers (more than a million pairs sold) are thought to improve posture, relieve back pain and exercise your legs and bum while you walk.
Muller first took an interest in the technology after crossing a Korean paddy field barefoot and discovering that it alleviated his back pain. I guess Korean Barefoot Technology doesn't have the same ring. He went on to analyse the barefoot walking techniques of the Masai in East Africa the semi-nomadic Masai allegedly have no postural issues or backache. They also have no savvy deal struck with MBT, that would allow them to benefit from every pair sold. The company does, though, have a project to drill boreholes, supplying clean water to areas of Kenya. So that's all right, then.
Kilgore's own foot mechanic was Dr Dave Cook, a lecturing podiatric biomechanist (who even knew this was a profession?) at South Bank University in London. Kilgour says she was impressed by his passion, knowledge and his trim buttocks "which you could bounce a quarter off". Sounds good to me.
Fitflops, it is claimed, burn fat, improve posture, strengthen muscles and reduce joint strain. How do they work? Well, in a similar way to MBT, the Fitflop slightly destablises the foot as one walks, creating a kind of continuous tension in the muscles of the foot and leg. "It's like a mini-wobble board," explains Kilgore. "It makes you step more naturally and it activates the slow-twitch muscle fibres in the legs [the fat burners]." Do Fitflops (£38) really do the job? I've only been wearing mine "exclusively" for a few days, so it's hard to tell. They definitely make walking a different experience, and, as one normally prim mother said to me on the school run, "The concept is the dog's b*******." You heard it here first.

My daughter and I each bought a pair of Fit Flops in April. We both say they are the most comfortable shoes we have ever worn. The band across the top of my foot is a bit loose for me but it's up high enough that I don't have any problem keeping them on. I have just ordered another pair.

I've been wearing my Fitflops for 2 months now. Comfortable (although rubbed terribly at first) and probably better for your posture than normal flipflops, but not worth the money (this product is 'made in China', so I suspect a nice profit is being made). I feel silly for buying into the hype.
Louise, London,
I think they are fantastic. I have worn mine for about 3 weeks and apart from being the most comfortable thing I have worn on my feet for a long time, they do actually work. My muscles in my legs and butt do feel like they have had a workout when I have been wearing them for the day.

I have to say I'm very disappointed. These are definately a gimmick! My feet are covered in blisters. My holiday was ruined as fitflops caused nothing but blisters and sores on my feet. Fabric absorbs moisture so they're unhygienic. Buy Birkenstock, Berghaus or Crocs instead! Walk away from these!

Hello,
Bought my online, just received them today. So far only walked around the house (snowing outside), they feel comfortable and cushy, I think if nothing else they'll be a very comfortable pair of slip ons. I am not looking for an easy solution, and am an avid work-out addict. Bought them for the times when you take your kid to Disney World and don't really work out, but walk a lot.
So, I'll get back to you on that.

Absolutely love my fit flops bought them in kensington in august and from the word go my feet never tired. why cant all shoes be made this way. I generally suffer with my feet tendonitus in the heels and through my job am on my feet all day so you can imagine the pain, when i finally get home to sit down before having to cook dinner. please please can the makers of these wonderful fit flops please make sensible walking shoes with the same properties as the fit flop as i would buy them in a heart beat. the fit flop for me is like walking on air the cushion sole is perfect for walking all day without pain. love them love them love them.
Elayne Bailey., LONDON.,
Absolutely hated these shoes. I was skeptical but I read positive reviews and decided to give them a try. I usually am an active walker but I've been away from it for several months. As soon as these shoes came in, I put them on and went for a one hour semi-fast paced walk on my tredmill. Not only did my feet have blisters the next day from trying to keep them from slipping off (I assure you I had the correct size), my muscles felt absolutely nothing for days to come. I continued this "experiment" for several days and felt no improvements. I returned them to bath and body works and the manager actually said to me, "ANOTHER pair being returned. I assume you hated them and they did not work." Enough said. Save your money for holiday shopping and stick to traditional workouts.

I picked up a pair in australia and I LOVE them. I have even purchased toe socks to make it through winter with them!

I have, like others, worn my fitflops almost continuously and am not looking forward to cold weather when I shall have to wear shoes/boots. I have found that my ankles and feet have not swollen up at all as they usually do in summer and they are looking slimmer and trimmer than for many years.
The only question I have is how to keep them clean and not - inevitably - a bit smelly. I scrub them periodically but don't want them to perish.
