Evening

Wearing a few statement pieces in dynamic colours will have far more impact than piling on all the contents of your jewellery box in one go. If you opt for a dramatic pair of earrings, steer clear of anything heavy around the neck. It’s also worth investing in an elegant cocktail watch with a jewel or fine-leather strap because clunky metal chains or thick leather straps will kill the effect of a knockout dress.

Work

Your watch and jewellery - much like your suit - should send out the right signals: discreet, assertive, efficient and in control. Avoid items that will jangle and prove distracting. Look for clean lines, as accessories should always complement your outfit rather than steal the limelight.

Weekend

Dress up neutral weekend wear with something bold; oversize watch faces are modern and sporty and a good alternative to anything too feminine. Graphic jewel designs are also best indulged when you’re wearing something pared down. Ramp up the rock factor, and you’re ready for Saturday’s shopping.

Occasionwear

Social occasions such as Ascot, Henley or a summer wedding are the perfect excuse to dig out your finest pieces. Be warned, though: rich jewel colours can look overdressed for daytime, so consider paler stones and avoid overdosing on the St Tropez. You want the VIP enclosure, not the WAG pen. And less is always more, especially when you’ve opted for a pattern dress.
