View a picture gallery of the worst of Victoria Beckham's outfits
As Victoria and David Beckham begin to make their mark in LA - Posh in a panoply of ever tighter outfits, David in nothing more than a pair of pants (see the latest shoot in W magazine) – here in the UK we’re more than accustomed to the former’s questionable love affair with fashion.
From Baden Baden hotpants to blingtastic Cavalli, Posh may be ‘making it’ in LA, but from years of over-exposure her pitfalls have become all too familiar for those of us on home turf. As the question begs, can she really be taken seriously in America, here we take a look at some of her more memorable forays into fashion.
Surprise, surprise: after only a handful of visits to LA Posh has already made the headlines for a series of questionable outfits. Most notable was her bid to be the newest signing for the LA Dodgers. Resisiting the temptation to wear a pair of practical trainers (heaven forbid she ever wear flat shoes) Posh opted for the platform version with the athletic manoeuvrability of a brick. Meanwhile, the most noteworthy fashion soap story since DVB landed Stateside is the bizarre relationship between Victoria Beckham and Katie Holmes. As each week passes the two seem to morph into one – same haircut, same huge sunglasses, same love of three inch heels.
But as we have all come to learn, this is Posh true to form. Even from her early days in the Spice Girls we could sniff her desire to outshine the others. While Ginger, Sporty, Baby and even Scary smiled, Posh scowled; while the others revelled in primary colours, Posh only wore black.
That is until the Spice Girls split. Then Posh began to indulge more and more in outlandish outfits. First there was the memorable Dave and Vic show – who can forget the matching Gucci biker leathers. And who would have guessed Victoria Beckham was an art lover? With the aid of good friend Roberto Cavalli she created a comprehensive replica of a Ming Vase for Elton John’s White Tie and Tiara Ball. (One wonders if Victoria - resplendent in Chinese dragons and a heaving cleavage was almost by the curatorial team at the British Museum for advice on Chinese ceramics.) Finally, lest we forget the trip to Baden Baden: legs, legs and more legs. In a daily uniform of hotpants, bosom-hugging waistcoats and hair extensions Posh was the veritable Queen of the Wags, determined at every flash of the paparazzi bulb to reign supreme and squash anyone else under her stiletto heel.
More recently, we have watched with incredulity as Posh pulled out all the stops to maintain headline focus on both sides of the Atlantic, pulling out a corker at the British Glamour Awards. Hailed as Glamour Magazine’s Woman of the Year (after Mother Teresa and Princess Diana, what better person to fight for the plight of the poor and needy worldwide?) her outfit was a cross between the Rocky Horror show and the chorus line at the Moulin Rouge: Chanel hotpants, lined stockings and a pair of leather fingerless gloves. She was lauded by Karl Lagerfeld while the public was more concerned about how she coped with the toilet breaks.
From a woman who wrote a book on how to dress, this is a sumptous back catalogue of excruciating extremism, one of which LA is blissfully unaware. But give the lady some time – we know she has plenty of ammunition for self destruction left in that Chloé handbag.

Victoria Beckham does not embody style, she merely embodies an imitation of a trend. She is probably the most ill dressed celebrity there is, perhaps only upstaged by the likes of Britney Spears. The States may, or may not love her. But one thing is for sure, she certainly ain't no Audrey Hepburn.
Natacha , Buenos Aires,
The point is that while Posh ticks the fashion boxes, that's really all she does- where is the style??!
And by style I mean what we laud real stylish ladies for; the ability to make clothes inidividual perhaps, to set trends (not among the chavs I mean), to accessorize or pair pieces with imagination and flair.
Posh possesses none of these. Her 'fashion' consists of pairing designer dresses with designer heels. That's not fashion, that's paint by numbers. She reads about coloured jeans so there's coloured jeans up next, but only with a black vest top. She's so terrified of looking 'unglamorous' that we never get casual looks which are usually the true test of style. The closest she gets is wincingly tight jeans with hells. As for accessories (there's usually too any) its large sunglasses and expensive bags all the way. Where's the colour? The patterns? Embroidery? 80% of photographed outfits are black/white/neutrals.
Her clothes are boring. Full stop.
Rebecca, edinburgh,
I'm appalled that anyone could consider that gorgeous Cavalli dress a disaster. The fabric is amazing, the cut sculptural, and she has the figure for it. Remember, that was the time of the chinoiserie inspired fashion, so it was very au courante.
Heather, Albuquerque, NM
Were we watching the same programme? VB came across as vacuous, narcassistic, shallow, conceited and self-obsessed. The staged PR was nauseating. I can't actually believe I managed to watch 60 minutes of banal, shameless self promotion. Aside from her husband, she has nothing going for her. It really is no wonder he has a wondering eye.....
Kerry, Sydney,
All things being relative - I think Ms. Posh will have a positive effect on Los Angeles fashion.
I used to have a passion for fashion before living in LA, but I have joined the natives here and dress where nothing matches anything, and it doesn't matter. Nothing fits, nothing is designed to fit. Personal comfort is paramount and that is the sum total of "fashionâ here.
will be a treat to see Ms. Posh be posh in LA. It was nice to read your column and remember the nuances of fashion where fashion matters.
The only question I have is - will Posh make LA posh, or will LA make Posh as drab and mismatched and "casual" as the rest of us.
The day you see Posh in matronly pressed linen will be the day that LA won. Or, the day you start seeing starlets get into and out of cars in short skirts, in a ladylike non revealing manner, that will be the day Posh won.
Diane, Los Angeles, USA
It was like watching a car crash... you couldn't look away... it was awful TV
The icing on the cake was the statement about missing David & the kids & this was the longest time away so to console herself she went shopping!
She says she needs a full time assistant but I was unsure why!! Do you need a full time assistant to watch you drink champagne? All I can say is thank the lord this wasn't stretched any longer than the already too long hour special.
Rich, NY,
She will, (inevtiably), smarten up and realize her own reality. she is no paris hilton, yet she thinks she can moreso 'manouver' the press... she has a rude awkening awaiting her... and i guarantee her it won't be pretty. i lived in the u.k. when she was supposedly famous there, and she wasn't, and she knows it. THAT, is the ultimate gimmick... she was NOT a respected figure EVER. she thinks she can take America for a ride... hilarious!!!
lomeo, toronto, canada
I think she looks fabulous. I believe her secret is that she washes her face in champagne....

To the UK....
David and Victoria(Beck&Posh) it seems will be
more appreciated here in Los Angeles than there
lately. David Hockney and many other Brits have
found out that living in L.A. is great.
Los Angeles Anglophiles wish more who are
not happy with London lately would follow the
Beckhams here. We need more British here
not less!

The Beckhams have probly set the state US/UK relations back to the revolutionary war.
George Glasser, Hoyland Nether,
While I hate the vacuous nature of celebrity today as much as the next person, neither of them are famous for nothing.
Victoria Beckham was a member of one of the most successful girl bands in the world, their albums have sales of around 40,000,000 worldwide (including the biggest selling US album of 1997).
And as for David Beckham, he was captain of the England football (ahem, soccer) team, the home of football.
So comparing them to someone like Paris is totally illogical.
Having said that, the LA program was the most shockingly bad piece of television I have ever seen!
Dan, London,
I watched the show Monday and she seemed like a lot of fun. I'm sad to see there aren't that many episodes. I'd have liked a whole season's worth. Reality shows depend on the charm of the star and she definitely has that. And I thought she was pretty sharp too. Most people looking at a massive view of LA wouldn't immediately be concerned with the huge drop that could kill someone. So she's sensible too. Maybe she can do something else like a talk show or fashion show.
Antoinette, New Bedford, MA
Please, take them back. We never wanted them and are already sick to death of reading about them. The whole $$ angle re making football more popular in the US is a joke as well. Didn't work with Pele, didn't work when the US women won the World Cup, it never worked. It's not going to work now, either.
So, please, take them back.
Alfred Bommel, Newport Beach, California
now that you sent us Posh, we should send you Paris.
B. Ored, Los Angeles, California USA
"Is LA ready for Victoria Beckham's style?" I just sprained my fat from rolling on the floor with laughter. I am afraid that her dowdy haute couture look just won't cut it here in Southern California. Nobody here, including the media, knows her or cares about her. If she wants to get some attention and get a FIRST glance, let alone a second, she's going to have to do something about her attire! She must remind herself she is in Southern California and try to "dress" accordingly.
Bob Evans, Anaheim, California
What silly silly people. I hope this is over soon.
jim, northern california, california
I watched her show and loved it! I wish it was a permanent series...her fashion was fabulous, down-to-earth and funny. Stop hating on Victoria..she's awesome.
jessica, sf,
I've never seen Victoria Beckham on tv before, and to watch her on tv tonight in the coming to America show was really entertaining! I think she is gorgeous, funny and she'd be great to hang out with. It's nice to see a lady dedicated to her husband and children, and who isn't nasty to others, and is modest. Good luck to her and her family, and I really hope she is made welcome in the states!!
Leanne, Manjimup, Australia
Jealous. If you got it, flaunt it. 20 years from now, she won't have it. I don't know how Beckham can even be convinced to leave his house in the morning.
Marvyn, Mufreesboro, TN
Just what we need, two more pseudo celebrities.
Malak de los Reyes, Washington, DC
Ready for her what???
Nicholas Lee, Windsor, UK
I saw the show too and really liked it. I could see myself watching it more if they had given a go for more shows. And her outfits arn't that bad.
H, Dallas,
This article reeks of jealousy and spite - leave the woman alone for God's sake! I watched her show last night and thought it was hilarious - most of it was very tongue-in-cheek and her shoes were, as always, to die for.
OK, she makes some style mistakes, but then - who doesn't? And with arm candy like David who really cares?
I hope the whole family has a fabulous time in LA and that the ladies in the US press are not quite so bitter and spiteful as those in the UK
Emma, Vancouver,, British Columbia
...check out the hilarious Naugahyde halter top Mrs. Beckham is wearing in the Ali G "interview" she did along with her husband; it looks so comfortable! so sexy! all lopsided and jammed up around her neck!

I agree, I liked her instantly. Her enthusiasm and love for her family were nice to see. I would definitely watch. We should be as open-minded about her as she is about us.

She's in LA now. Here we aren't surprised by fashion or lack of. Hollywood is the capital of extravagant fashions. She'll blend right in and be just one more. There isn't going to be much of a limelight here for here. She might even be able to relax without everyone doing articles and stories about her every move and outlandish fashions.
Ryan, Los Angeles, CA
I love her so much she is so real about life and she does LOVE HER family. I watched the her show on monday and enjoy every bit of it. She has got class and style and will give holly wood a better face than what we have been seeing. Am so glad they are here.
Jairo, Washington , DC
i also liked this show i wish it were a permanent show she is witty and more down to earth than i think anyone knew.i would love to see this brought back to the origanal idea .
carrie, lincoln park, michigan usa
I watched the show last night msyelf. And I have to say I enjoyed. I am glad she has a sense of humor (even thought it can be a little dry) I liked the fact she was willign to try new things. I would definitely watch again. If we are stuck with Paris and Nicole SImpl Life. I think America cand eal with another reality show. POSH ROCKS! SHE IS MAJOR! LOL!
AQT2C, phila, pa
Before watching a few minutes of her show last night (as much as I could get through without vomitting from disgust while simultaneously yawning from extreme boredom), I had no idea this woman was as much of an obnoxious, annoying, silly, vapid little bitch as she seems to be. Here in LA, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a REAL celebrity, and we don't pay them too much mind. If "Posh" thinks this city, or this country, is going to drop everything to follow her every move, I'm afraid she has a rude awakening in store for her. Mention her name and most people reply, "Who?".
Brian, Los Angeles, CA
'Effortless' will never be used in the same sentence as Victoria Beckham when discussing her fashion 'choices'. Forced, trying too hard and desperate, will be used more and more often, as Posh finds herself desperately trying to fit in to life in LA, although she may want to re-think the killer heels in favour of a couple of pairs of flip-flops- go on, Vic, relax!! Chillout a bit, give your bunions a rest and make for American Apparel, if you really want to fit in!! Posh is a fashion victim, not icon, and we now have our very own Paris Hilton equivalent- not really famous for much, but more famous for being famous. And wearing a different outfit every 3 hours whiole doing it. Posh, find something to do, something really worthwhile, and you may find you dont need to try so hard when getting dressed every morning. (which must get bloody boring for you!!!)
Louise Majors, london, england
I don't think you understand LA. She will do great in the city of angels. We do extreme expression well.
Origen, LA, CA
She is a great girl!
karl lax, orange, va
I enjoyed Victoria Beckhams show and find her funny, smart, and very beautiful. I would love to see more episodes of this show as it is right up there with Kathy Griffn's, "My life on the D list". As Victoria would say, "She is Major"
LOVE HER!
Jeff Ammons, Knoxville, Tennessee
Two words---WHO CARES?
Tina, Los Angeles, U.S
I watched her show on Monday and I liked it. She was not taking herself seriously and seemed to be open minded to the things that LA offered. She seemed pleasant and funny and someone that is in love with her family. If this show came back, I would watch it.
