View a picture gallery of the worst of Victoria Beckham's outfits
As Victoria and David Beckham begin to make their mark in LA - Posh in a panoply of ever tighter outfits, David in nothing more than a pair of pants (see the latest shoot in W magazine) – here in the UK we’re more than accustomed to the former’s questionable love affair with fashion.
From Baden Baden hotpants to blingtastic Cavalli, Posh may be ‘making it’ in LA, but from years of over-exposure her pitfalls have become all too familiar for those of us on home turf. As the question begs, can she really be taken seriously in America, here we take a look at some of her more memorable forays into fashion.
Surprise, surprise: after only a handful of visits to LA Posh has already made the headlines for a series of questionable outfits. Most notable was her bid to be the newest signing for the LA Dodgers. Resisiting the temptation to wear a pair of practical trainers (heaven forbid she ever wear flat shoes) Posh opted for the platform version with the athletic manoeuvrability of a brick. Meanwhile, the most noteworthy fashion soap story since DVB landed Stateside is the bizarre relationship between Victoria Beckham and Katie Holmes. As each week passes the two seem to morph into one – same haircut, same huge sunglasses, same love of three inch heels.
But as we have all come to learn, this is Posh true to form. Even from her early days in the Spice Girls we could sniff her desire to outshine the others. While Ginger, Sporty, Baby and even Scary smiled, Posh scowled; while the others revelled in primary colours, Posh only wore black.
That is until the Spice Girls split. Then Posh began to indulge more and more in outlandish outfits. First there was the memorable Dave and Vic show – who can forget the matching Gucci biker leathers. And who would have guessed Victoria Beckham was an art lover? With the aid of good friend Roberto Cavalli she created a comprehensive replica of a Ming Vase for Elton John’s White Tie and Tiara Ball. (One wonders if Victoria - resplendent in Chinese dragons and a heaving cleavage was almost by the curatorial team at the British Museum for advice on Chinese ceramics.) Finally, lest we forget the trip to Baden Baden: legs, legs and more legs. In a daily uniform of hotpants, bosom-hugging waistcoats and hair extensions Posh was the veritable Queen of the Wags, determined at every flash of the paparazzi bulb to reign supreme and squash anyone else under her stiletto heel.
More recently, we have watched with incredulity as Posh pulled out all the stops to maintain headline focus on both sides of the Atlantic, pulling out a corker at the British Glamour Awards. Hailed as Glamour Magazine’s Woman of the Year (after Mother Teresa and Princess Diana, what better person to fight for the plight of the poor and needy worldwide?) her outfit was a cross between the Rocky Horror show and the chorus line at the Moulin Rouge: Chanel hotpants, lined stockings and a pair of leather fingerless gloves. She was lauded by Karl Lagerfeld while the public was more concerned about how she coped with the toilet breaks.
From a woman who wrote a book on how to dress, this is a sumptous back catalogue of excruciating extremism, one of which LA is blissfully unaware. But give the lady some time – we know she has plenty of ammunition for self destruction left in that Chloé handbag.
