Dressing up, part 1: some American fashionistas practically wear ballgowns for the 10am Carolina Herrera Show in New York. Now their London counterparts are slowly ditching their slovenly ways. Cue multiple trips to the Daniel Hersheson blow-dry bar, a wardrobe of new dresses and serial outings with Anya Hindmarch’s patent Lautner bag.
Dressing up, part 2: female impersonators proliferate on and off the catwalks, although the impersonated female in question is more the porn-star Tawny Roberts than the Alist actress Naomi Watts. The Noki show, part of Fashion East, featured drag queens in terrifyingly apocalyptic outfits, with hair attached to fingernails and chemical masks that had even Gareth “The Dungeonmeister” Pugh looking somewhat uneasy in the front row.
Dressing enthusiastically: an upbeat fashion mood means only one thing: a slew of patriotic T-shirts. Favourites are Diane Von Furstenberg’s London T; the London Fashion Geek slogan (from the Geek Squad, a company that troubleshoots your computer problems) and Christopher Bailey’s watery Union Jack available at Burberry, part of the proceeds of which help victims of the UK floods.
Dressing down: forget Kate and Pete; London’s new style icons are Agyness Deyn and Gareth Pugh. Subtribes of Agynesses have been spotted cloning the model’s trademark magnolia crop and black eyebrows – although, dammit, as of Wednesday night’s Giles show, she’s gone tangerine. Meanwhile, Gareth’s delicate Beatonesque beauty is aspired to by many an East of Hoxton-ite male, some of whom have adopted pussycat bows and handbags made out of old Vogue magazines.
Dressing yourself: what you’ll really want to buy next season: a blazer, a blouse and a stand-out shoe in a colour that doesn’t really go with anything but is a statement unto itself.
Looking intelligent: many fashionistas were seen sporting Harry Potter-style glassless glasses – at least that’s better for the eyes than borrowing someone’s prescription pair.
