If, after 82 mince pies, you’re wondering how you’ll ever again fit into a pair of “boyfriend” jeans – let alone the skinny variety – here’s a comforting thought; in six months’ time you might not have to. Because the good news on the fashion horizon is that the catwalk’s lean, dark, dominatrix fantasy is now out, replaced by fuller skirts, softer, feminine lines and bold colours.
Which is a good thing because, as most women know, a ruffle or a flounce judiciously deployed will hide a multitude of insecurities that a pencil skirt and a corset belt will not. This year is shaping up to be a colourful, flamboyant one. If you’re smart (and quick), you might be able to pick up an item or two in the sales. Here’s what to look out for:
FLORALS
No, we don’t mean digging around in the attic for your Laura Ashley garb circa 1976. While the florals in question aren’t too prescriptive – they range from the bold, splashy type at Dolce & Gabbana to spriggier patterns at Dries van Noten – the trick lies in how to give this staple a modern twist. Don’t be too precious about your flora: toughen things up a bit. Choose simple, sleek hair (most catwalk styles showed models with casual chignons), minimum make-up and jewellery, nothing boho and gladiator leather heels (see Balenciaga) to give your outfit an edge.
How to make this work
— Opt for florals that bear some relation to your size: petite frames need something spriggy all over; taller ones can carry off a loud, graphic print for a more dramatic look.
HIGH WAISTS
High-waisted trousers and skirts not only offer a polished and elegant alternative to jeans or regular trousers, they also elongate your body (great news for the petite among you). Worn with a simple shirt or fine knit, they exude a rakish charm.
How to make this work
— Ensure that the waist is not too high as this draws too much attention to the hips. For a less boyish look, find a blouse with full sleeves to give your outfit a less tailored feel.
— If your trouser legs flare out at the bottom, opt for flat shoes (if you’re tall enough to carry them off) , otherwise wear a wedge platform.
— Look for fabrics that skim over the bottom and tops of thighs rather than hugging them. Avoid pockets or detailing on the front; these only add bulk, as do heavy tweed fabrics.
