Of all the cruel sartorial fates that a woman might endure, the opportunity to be photographed standing next to a supermodel is not one that many would welcome. Especially when that supermodel happens to be in around £7,000 of double-faced Dior cashmere and you are wearing a crumpled, off-the-peg white jacket, which plays havoc with your pallor.
Such was the fate of the PM’s wife, Sarah Brown, when she held a luncheon for Carla Bruni Sarkozy yesterday in St James’s, London, with 150 female guests including Emma Freud, Judi Dench, Annie Lennox and Sabrina Guinness.
The fashion tension was palpable. Go too trussed up and you might appear as if you were trying to compete, too toned down and you might blend into the background. In the end the hair was big, the coats’ fur trims were even bigger. But, bar a few exceptions such as a slick grey trouser suit (not too dissimilar to Mrs Sarkozy’s), the rest of them appeared to be a motley crew with no discernible “wow” factor.
Sarah Brown’s former career as a PR consultant would certainly have impressed upon her the importance of a camera-friendly statement outfit. Certainly there was nothing wrong in going to Jaeger, a premium high street brand which is renowned for its tailored, classic approach to fashion. But it was a mistake to choose monochromatic shades. Her choice of white jacket (a careful, three-figure £299) did not help slim her silhouette and the black dress was ageing. However, the opaque tights were a triumph of sorts; not everyone can pull off 10 denier the way Mrs Sarkozy can. Perfect, toned and wrinkle-free legs are certainly a requirement.
The choice of jacket fabric was also unfortunate: when you know you are going to be subjected to the harsh glare of the paparazzo’s flash, cotton can often possess the unflattering sheen of something that has faded in the wash.
There is a pathetic expectation in this country that Sarah Brown should dress as a woman of “the people” when actually she is the PM’s wife, who should have got herself kitted out in something with a luxe finish: a tweed, perhaps, to keep her warm, or a wool or silk jersey, which would have at least hung properly.
Unsurprisingly, given Mrs Sarkozy’s access to Dior’s autumn/winter collection, she managed to look sufficiently “on trend” in her fashionable choice of purple and grey, as well as elegant and pulled together. In her trouser suit, she even appeared a little dynamic. In another canny move (not much, one assumes, was left to chance for this trip), none of these Dior items will be sold until May or June, thereby ensuring that these outfits were being worn for the first time. It is a coup for the French fashion house, whose sales will undoubtedly rocket off the back off the endless press coverage Mrs Sarkozy has received this week. So lucky for those invited who could not make it to the lunch, and the subsequent unfavourable comparisons that will follow. But then, unless you are a Rolling Stone, how many times in your life do you have to stand next to a supermodel?

Agree with most of the comments below. If women are now to be required to look like couture-clad French/Italian supermodels before being 'allowed' to appear in public, then there is very little hope for any of us!
Yes, Ms Bruni is a very beautiful and elegant woman, and her clothes are exquisite, and there is nothing wrong with admiring her for that. But why can't we just admire, without using it as a stick to beat other women? I thought Sarah Brown looked perfectly fine, and as long as it isn't inappropriate or offensive, shouldn't she just wear what she likes and feels comfortable in?
Sarah, London, UK
Why do women do this to their own sex? Humiliate them publicly about what they wear and how it looks. Why not turn their attention to how the men are booted and suited? Why not compare the cut and the cost of the PM's and the President's clothes? Are these fashion writers saying that the men are to be taken seriously but the wives are merely trivial accessories not to be taken seriously? Come on girls you should be ashamed of yourselves, and what's more you are making yourselves look shallow and ridiculous. Who cares!

If I was mother of the bride and had just spent nearly £300 on a jacket I would be pretty fed up to have had The Times fashion writer being so specific about the make and cost of Mrs Brown's outfit.
I thought she looked very nice indeed.
If she had bought something more expensive she would have been criticised because of that. No hope of praise for her from The Times no matter what. Some of the outre garments featured in its fashion pages make we wonder who on earth would wear them.

No matter what the Prime Minister's wife wears she will be criticised in The Times either for not spending enough or for spending too much.
I thought she looked very well.
I expect anyone who has bought the Jaeger jacket will feel self-conscious wearing it now that the price is on public record. Shame!

FOR CRYING OUT LOUD
And you wonder why women aren't taken seriously in jobs like these. Of course they wont be with women such as the author of this article nitpicking fashion sense when thats not the real matter

My goodness, who was the last lady in the lavender outfit, straight out of the fifties? Normally, I wouldn't comment on such things as fashion. But this outfit was strange!!
Selena, Toronto, CA
Sorry but I have to agree the Brits don't make the effort - and you can't tell me that Sarah Brown couldn't afford to get a new outfit. London shops are full of fabulous clothes so why not just try for a change? Most of the big stores have advisors who would have loved the challenge. No doubt Carla was wearing couture for this important occasion - an opportunity to promote French fashions too not taken up by a Public Relations guru - shame!!!

Intelligent women who run their own companies and do great jobs have far more interesting things to think about than how they will look in the photographs the next day.
I'd be happy to stand next to a supermodel anyday, obviously I'm never going to match up in clothes and looks but a confident woman who feels success has many different types of measures isn't going to worry about that.
Rachel, Windsor, Berkshire, UK
I think Sarah Brown looks fantastic - stop this self hating navel gazing that we Brits do. You wouldn't be happy even if Carla Bruni was the PM's wife.
Shardonay, Romford,
Come on, this sort of thing belongs in the Daily Mail's "Femail" section! "Yes, ladies, looks are ALL that matter in life. Aren't you ugly next to Carla Bruni? Yes, you are" etc. etc.
