What is your favourite item in your wardrobe? A grey Yohji Yamamoto tuxedo coat with an interior S&M-style shoelace construction. It was the first nice piece of clothing that I bought after my second son was born, so it’s a little big but certainly worth gaining a stone for.
What is your fall-back outfit? Earnest Sewn jeans, Yohji short black boots, a white T-shirt and little cashmere vest. This never looks bad, as long as you have a great haircut.
What is your one piece of fashion or beauty advice? Fashion advice: if it’s not an instant “yes”, don’t buy it. Beauty advice: always wear sunscreen on your face.
Biggest fashion faux pas? I think I’ve managed to block most of them out of my memory, but I still cringe at the thought of a flesh-toned pink stretchy dress that I wore to my sixth-grade graduation ceremony.
What aspect of fashion do you hate most? That if you have a full-time job you can’t possibly keep up.
How do you think people perceive you from the way you dress? That I’m dressing for myself and not anybody else.
If you could steal anyone’s wardrobe, past or present, fiction or reality, whose would it be and why? Katharine Hepburn’s wardrobe. I love those trousers — you’d understand if you saw my knees.
If you could change one part of your body, which would it be? My knees. Actually, can I push my luck and extend that to my legs in general?
What are your five desert island staples? A white Splendid crew-neck Barneys Co-op limited-edition — and now discontinued — T-shirt, sunblock, Sexy Mother Pucker lip plumper (in case I have to woo the natives), a pair of FitFlops (obviously, classic red) and my iPod.
What is a day in the life of Marcia Kilgore? Mornings are crazy, as I get my kids fed, watered, dressed, brushed and to school on time. I then rush to the office for a 9.30 creative/artwork/marketing review. Anything can happen after that. I may be doing a TV or radio interview, attending a four-hour product development meeting to conjure up new ideas for FitFlops, taking a train to Nottingham to meet the big guys at Boots, or hosting an editor event for my beauty range, Soap & Glory. Once in a while, I spend eight hours glued to my computer.
Marcia Kilgore founded Bliss and Soap & Glory. She also designed the FitFlop.
