In the era of the high-rise heel, it’s no surprise that an architect has been called upon to design women’s shoes.
Architect Zaha Hadid, known for her abilities to mould metal and glass into spectacular buildings, has joined forces with Brazilian shoemakers Melissa to create a new women’s shoe.
The £200 limited edition shoe takes on features of one of Hadid’s grand-scale designs with cut out holes for the toes and diagonally sloping straps.
“I have 30 years of research on different areas of architecture and design and this was a very challenging project," said Hadid, "not only in design but on the technical side.”
The company is well-known for collaborations with designers from in and outside of the fashion world. The company has previously sold designs by Vivienne Westwood, as well as interior designer Karim Rashid and the Brazilian Campana brothers, known for their eccentric furniture designs.
Not unlike a complicated building, you will have to wait to enjoy the landmark designs - they are not available in the shops until September when they will be launched at London Fashion Week, and then they will only be available at Dover Street Market.
Melissa has a patent formula for creating footwear and boasts that the classic shoe takes less than a minute to produce, adding that it has made 50 million pairs of shoes over the past 20 years.
The ecologially-conscious shopper need not worry about the plastics in the shoes. All products are created from sustainable sources and we’re reassured that the shoes can be disassembled and recycled too, making them ideal for vegans, environmentalists - and architects.
If you’re more interested in the designs than the shoes, a large scale model of a pair was installed in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Click here to see the You Tube video.
