It's home to some of the strongest voices in fashion, the grandest personalities in the magazine business and an army of thigh-high booted foot soldiers sometimes referred to as Condé Nasties.
Now Condé Nast - which publishes Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ and Tatler - is vaulting into a new arena with its latest magazine: a style magazine edited by one of the most influential taste-makers in the UK.
Katie Grand, the creator and editor-in-chief of the niche magazine Pop who has worked as a stylist to high-flying brands such as Louis Vuitton and Prada, will launch a new title incorporating fashion and art.
"It is a new departure for Condé Nast UK to publish an edgy, high-end style title in this sector," said Nicholas Coleridge, managing director of Condé Nast, in a statement.
The magazine, due on newsstands in March 2009, will be the fourth launch Grand has presided over. She set up Dazed & Confused with Jefferson Hack and the photographer Rankin in 1993. In 1994 she launched an offshoot magazine called Another, now published biannually. Pop was created in 2000 as a sister to The Face. And while the new magazine will be published by the home of Vogue and other fashion titles, its focus will be on experimentation rather than dishing advice on how to wear the latest Balenciaga.
In an Observer Woman article in July, Grand said of her magazine Pop, 'I realised a couple of years ago that, much as I love Vogue and W, the kind of magazines that are closest to my heart are the style magazines, like The Face, i-D, Interview. I find Interview magazine really inspiring - not that I'm comparing myself to Andy Warhol! - and I suppose I want to build Pop into something equally iconic, with covers people remember.'
The as-yet-unnamed magazine will appear in a slightly larger size, and its new editor has set her sights high. "I feel the time is ready for a new magazine, a new arena for new ideas. This time we’ll have a larger format, bigger budgets and broader horizons than ever before," Grand said in a statement.
