The day the world was waiting for has finally come, one anticipated by millions around the world – Michelle Obama has stepped out in her first Inauguration Day outfit.
And the first glimpse of the First Lady-to-be’s wardrobe has indicated a strong leaning towards regal pale gold.
Arriving at St John's Episcopal Church in Washington, Michelle Obama first showed off her outfit, stepping out of the car wearing a coat and matching shift dress in lace brocade in golden hues.
If a slightly sombre choice, the outfit, designed by Cuban-American Isabel Toledo, was entirely appropriate for the church setting and later the stately ceremony on the dias. A shimmer of metallic thread shot through the fabric gives it a subtle shine without being too flashy or inappropriate. It was made of Swiss wool lace, backed with netting for warmth and lined in French silk, according to the New York Times.
What appeared to be an embellished diamante necklace was a fashion-forward touch adding a hint of decoration without being too distracting. The green kitten heel shoes were an unconventional choice but certainly a counterpoint to years of first ladies who match shoes and bags.
Meanwhile, her husband opted for a classic politician’s outfit of black suit, red tie (a bipartisan gesture?), white shirt and highly polished shoes. In a robust fashion move, neither Obamas wore a hats or scarves to protect them against the harsh winter weather, although the First Lady's gloves appeared to match her shoes.
Mrs Obama, known for her bold choice of colours, has worn yellow tones in several previous public appearances. On the Tonight Show with Jay Leno last October she wore an entire outfit of co-ordinated yellow: a demure two-tone yellow cardigan over a yellow print blouse with yellow skirt. Then, just yesterday, she wore a different yellow cardigan for the We Are The Future Concert at the Verizon Center in Washington to honour military families.
Mrs O has not indicated how many times she will be changing her outfit today, but fashionistas are waiting with bated breath to see what she will wear to the ten inaugural balls she will attend with her husband tonight.
