I am a young mum who needs sprucing up. I like looking casual and feeling comfortable, but I’m sure that there is a better way to do it than in my old tracksuit bottoms and hoodie. Please help me to find a stylish new look; I am 33 and a size 12.
Don’t worry — these days you can easily achieve style and comfort in equal measure. Actually, the catwalk has shown some sportier styles for summer, so the high street is awash with jersey harem pants and racer-back vests, more of which later.
First, you need to buy a few basics that are good quality and well cut. American Retro has one of the best selections around. Look at its top and trousers, above. Both are simple in design but possess something faintly fashionable — probably the subtle choice of colours and tiny details, such as the just-so buttons and perfectly cut-away pockets.
American Retro isn’t the cheapest option (the top pictured above is £51, the trousers £70; 020-8969 4441), but if you purchase a few good basics there then you can top up on the high street. Click on to the AR website (americanretro.com) and look at the whole collection; it is a masterclass in how to wear casual clothes without looking as if you have just left the gym.
What you need to remember is that several thin layers worn together always look nicer than one bulky sweatshirt. H&M has plenty of plain, thin T-shirts in good basic colours for around £8 that are easy to layer.
American Apparel is a little more expensive, with cardigans starting at £29 (americanapparel.co.uk), but it has lots of modern designs to answer your stylish needs. And don’t forget that even when you’re wearing jersey, a nice necklace or floral scarf won’t go amiss.
