Security alert
With the threat of Peta activists boycotting the Julien Macdonald show, security guards at the Hilton hotel where it took place were zealously checking bags and confiscating bottles of water. Unfortunately they forgot to confiscate the greatest threat to Macdonald’s image - a front row of less-than-stellar celebrities such as Tania Bryer, Tamara Beckwith and Tara Palmer-Tomkinson (overheard discussing her favourite dog breeds). And why was the water confiscated? Never mind a Peta protester damaging some of the clothes if they chucked it at the catwalk; they might also wash off some of Julien’s make-up.
Model of the moment
Who was the real star of fashion week? No, not the clothes, the caterers or Stuart Rose, but model of the moment Irina Lazareanu, who opened practically every show from Paul Smith to Richard Nicoll. Anyone wanting to imitate her style might have to start befriending some designers, however. When we caught up with the former Babyshambles drummer she was wearing a pair of Louise Goldin leggings given to her by the designer after the show. No wonder she was having a "fantastic time."
Shoes Al Gore would love
Fashion loves recycling, as anyone who sees this season’s round of leggings and ankle boots knows. But short-lived trends and non-eco-materials mean that – at heart – fashion design is hardly a green endeavour. Now, as a kind of an Earth-friendly fashion statement, a designer has created couture shoes that can be recycled. Georgina Goodman has incorporated recycled drinks cans into a one-off pair of heels to highlight reusability of the material and, well, basically to see if she could do it.
"It's very difficult to make something on the foot that's metal," says Goodman. "But then, I have worked in hard materials before, so I decided it would be a really exciting and creative challenge," says the designer whose women's shoes sell for as much as £1,000. Her "recycled" shoes are made of leather and adorned with metal - cut into circles, melted and twisted into spike heels and stitched onto leather pieces, with laces that are finished with a spray of pull-tabs. The effect is half art project, half high-end stiletto. While they're unlikely to drastically reduce your carbon footprint, they're an interesting response to an alarming ecological crisis. "We're all going to have to start to think carefully how we as individuals think about our environment," says Goodman. Drinks cans are 100% recyclable. "They can also be recycled infinitely so technically I could produce an entirely new pair of shoes for next season by melting down this pair." Just think of it as a step in the right direction.

Zandra upstaged
No one expected the pink-haired Zandra Rhodes to be out-shone at her own show, but Laquisha Jonz a 6-foot-something transvestite, and the accessories editor of Rubbish magazine, stole her thunder. Clad in an Adidas tracksuit that stretched inelegantly over her prosthetic hips (Jonz is almost as wide as she is tall), Hatton Garden’s entire diamond collection around her neck and with a wig of many colours, Zandra, like the rest of us, was left speechless.

Trinny and Susannah pants
Trinny and Susannah aren't backwards in coming forwards when dealing with fashion and flab. A ruthless and methodical confidence knock, soothed by several cashmere twinsets and the odd stiletto heel, sorts out the former. Whilst the flab has been something they literally worked around. Not any more, because T&S have developed their very own suction pants designed to systematically lift bums, flatten wobbles and reduce thigh size, they are the lazy woman’s lipo and give a whole new meaning to letting someone into your knickers. Trinny & Susannah Original Magic Knickers™ will be available nationwide from the autumn.
