Marc Jacobs “She was caught shoplifting. It was so ironic because she had taken some [clothes] that were ours, and yet she’d always had so many of our clothes anyway, so we couldn’t figure it out. But it wasn’t that important. She asked to be in the campaign and we were like, sure, let’s do it.

Juergen Teller “I was fascinated by that Bambi look she has got. I just wanted to photograph her face, and I got rid of the clothes, which maybe wasn’t such a good idea.”

Marc Jacobs “Kate has incredible personal style, she’s a great personality and a really good friend. We’ve shared lots of laughs and been through ups and downs.”

Juergen Teller ”She said, ‘I haven’t got time to do the shoot. I’m going to be on holiday.’ And then she said, ‘Why don’t you come to Ireland with me to Ronnie Wood’s?’ I said, ‘The weirder the better.’ She was drumming away on the drums and picking up the guitars.”

Marc Jacobs “I’ve always loved Stephanie on a personal level. She’s done my shows, way, way back in the day. I love that image.”

Juergen Teller “I did a book with her called More. We worked on it for two and a half years. There’s such a warmth about her. She’s so fantastic with the children and was great with my daughter. She’s a lovely lady, but she comes with this complete sexuality and it was important for me to capture it. For this picture, at first she did some funny bends and I thought, that’s not going to work. And then she did it again and it was magical. “

Juergen Teller “She’s a close friend. Marc had seen some pictures I’d done of her and he said, ‘It would be a dream come true if we could have Charlotte Rampling in an ad.’ We shot in the Hôtel de Crillon in Paris. I didn’t tell Marc I was going to be in the pictures. The clothes arrived and I was too fat and couldn’t fit into any of them. The only thing that fitted me was these silver pants. She said, ‘So, Juergen, what are we going to do?’ I started to sweat and I said, ‘Well, Charlotte, I thought I could just kiss you and fondle your breasts.’ As soon as I said it I thought, oh my God, I shouldn’t have said that. But that’s what I wanted to do. I’ve just got to be honest. She did not say a word. She cocked her head back, got out her cigarillo, lit the cigarillo and just let me sit there. I thought, oh God, the show is over. Then she had another drag from her cigarillo and said, ‘Let’s go.’ F***ing hell, I got away with it.”

Marc Jacobs “I said to Cindy, ‘I would love it if you did the ads’, and she said, ‘Well, I’ll do it, but I don’t want to sit as a subject, I want to be a part of it.’ She and Juergen got together and had a great time inventing all these characters, so it became more like a Cindy Sherman piece.”

Juergen Teller “She’s very good with make-up, and she’s very good with her body structure and her face structure. She knows how to play around with it. She puts more work into it than a model. She works actively with her appearance. She does her own make-up.”

Jurgen Teller "Kim Gordon was in the very first ad in 1998. They were friends and she always wore his clothes. It was exciting for me because I like their music and I couldn’t think of anything better than to listen to their music and photograph them."
