Jean Seberg proved that ‘boy hair’ could look good on women and kickstarted a trend that dominated the Sixties (along with the miniskirt). Her pixie-haired feminity lives on, most recently echoed in Audrey Tautou's Amelie.
5. Annie Hall, Woody Allen, 1977.
With Kate Moss’s waistcoats and the revival of Oxford Bags, the Annie Hall look never really went away. Even Diane Keaton refused to leave it behind, rarely being seen in anything other than a suit jacket and trousers on the red carpet.
6. Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, Howard Hawks, 1953.
Marilyn Monroe singing ‘Diamonds are a girl’s best friend’ in her pink dress and gloves has been mimicked over and over again. Whether it’s Madonna or Paris Hilton, the platinum Blonde will always be sexy.
7. Desperately Seeking Susan, Susan Seidelman, 1985.
Head-to-toe black with gold costume jewellery and pillar box red lipstick became an Eighties staple after this film. featuring pre-biceps Madonna. For better or worse, it was also the film that made it ok to show your bra strap.
8. Pulp Fiction, Quentin Tarantino, 1994.
Again, we see the black clothes and red lipstick, but this time with a Louise Brook-esque black fringed bob. Uma Thurman’s Mia Wallace was endlessly influential. It has launched thousands of Halloween costumes, syringe attached.
9. Saturday Night Fever, John Badham, 1977.
John Travolta’s white flared suit has inspired fancy dress costumes since the film’s release in 1977. Acclaimed film critic Gene Siskel liked the film so much he bought the original suit for $17,000 at a charity auction.
10. Blow Up, Michelangelo Antonioni, 1966.
Blow Up was the film that defined the Swinging Sixties, with its debauched fashion shoots, wild parties and, of course, plenty of miniskirts. It was the first British film to feature full frontal female nudity.
