In a kind of fashion meets French exchange programme, the vibe of New York's trendy Lower East Side (LES) is being transplanted to central London for four weeks.

For the project, the Wish You Were Here Swap, 11 up-and-coming designers from New York’s Lower East Side district, will be selling their wares in two pop-up shops. The LES, as it's known, has a reputation for trendy young designers, secret clubs and hipster denizens. The event is running in the Newburgh Quarter, a shopping area near London's Carnaby Street, in collaboration with a Lower East Side group.

At the launch this Saturday attendees will be able to take a free trip in a black cab painted with the iconic New York yellow with black and white checks. American brownies, truffles, slaw and ribs will be dished up at the Big Apple Food Market off Foubert’s Place. Diners can also dig into classic Big Apple hot dogs and cream cheese bagels.

As part of the month-long exchange, shoppers will be treated to a discount shopping night, a New York style block party with a catwalk show, and a Hallowe’en closing party.

In New York last month, shoppers across the pond took part in an English tea party, listened to bands and browsed racks of Fred Perry, Twenty8Twelve and Peckham Rye, among other labels.

The move is the latest in a growing trend for ‘pop-up’ shops and restaurants, where retailers set up shop for a limited period in disused units. The Newburgh Quarter has hosted several pop-up experiences, including a walk-in cocktail created by jelly and food entrepreneurs Bompas and Parr, in which attendees donned head to toe jumpsuits and sipped gin and tonics in a room filled with a fine gin mist.
