Maternity wear — judging by the glut of smock tops and empire-line styles this summer — is finally enjoying a style renaissance. Take Tuesday night’s party at the Serpentine Gallery, which was one big celebrity bump-fest. I counted no less than 12 glamorous women in figure-hugging silk jersey, ornate beading and gladiator-style gold sandals. But how easy is it to look stylish when the temperature hits 30C (86F), and just how much flesh is it acceptable to bare?
The consensus is that showing your stomach in tops and bottoms that don’t quite meet is as irredeemably naff (not to mention dated) as flashing your G-string. The dress is a big hit this season (a loose kimono in cotton or silk is a practical option in the heat), although take care to avoid very shiny fabrics or large, graphic prints that will accentuate your size, rather than your bump.
It’s also worth noting that although empire line is in vogue, it’s a cut that will emphasise your stomach rather than conceal it. Show a bit of new season savvy by teaming slimmish, low-rise trousers with a longer, looser top for a change in body proportions.
To draw attention to other parts of the body, look for details such as puffed, fluted or three-quarter length sleeves or a deeper V-neck. Instead of trying to fasten bulky cardigans or jackets that look awkward over your bump, try a cropped jacket or capelet which will be less restricting.
While teetering around in high heels is impractical, those resolutely averse to flats should consider a small block wedge, which still manages to elongate heavy calves and ankles, giving you that extra physical and mental lift.
