Mothers and daughters have traditionally dressed very differently; how
connected are your styles?
Yasmin: I had my daughters young [the first at 24] so I feel very close
in age and there isn’t an obvious style barrier — though there probably
should be! I actually think that young people are more conservative these
days. It’s difficult for them to find something that’s their own. I came
from a generation that wanted to break some rules.
Amber: Mummy has influenced all three of us. The most important lesson
she’s taught me is to make an effort when I go out. If I’m just seeing
friends I don’t care, but I’ll always look nice for a special event.
Do you feel that your wardrobes are interchangeable? How much do you borrow
from each other?
Y: I’m probably not quite as quick to get my legs out as I once was, but
if I’ve been to the gym or am having a good day, then I can get away with
the same things as my daughters.
A: I probably take more from her than she takes from me. The things
that take my fancy are usually pretty tops. I keep them for ages and then
she comes in hunting around. Mum has some great vintage [Azzedine] Alaïa
stuff too. One rule is that I can’t wear anything before she does.
Yasmin, did you design the YLB collection with cross-generation clothes
sharing in mind?
Y: I honestly design clothes for myself. If they don’t make me happy
and I can’t wear them, then the piece doesn’t go into the collection. I was
flattered and shocked that when I brought the samples home, my daughters
were gasping to get their hands on bits.
What are your favourite items in your wardrobes?
Y: My fluffy Muk Luk slippers — I spend most of my time in heels, so when
I get home I can’t wait to get them on my feet.
A: A Temperley leather jacket. I wear it with everything.
What are your fallback outfits?
Y: I designed a tea-dress inspired by a vintage blouse that I loved. I
wear it all the time.
A: Head-to-toe black: an American Apparel dress with big platform
heels.
What is your one piece of fashion or beauty advice?
Y: Have fun!
A: Take care of yourself, always moisturise and cleanse.
Biggest fashion faux pas?
Y: I make them all the time; I’d hate to think there isn’t another one
around the corner! There are things that other people thought were faux pas:
I once wore a Prada dress that went see-through when the camera flashes went
off. Yes, you could see straight through the dress and I had lace knickers
on, but I didn’t think it was a big deal.
A: Kermit-green, ribbed leggings.
What aspect of fashion do you dislike?
Y: The idea of being dictated to. It’s about forming your own story.
A: I don’t like the way people are slaves to fashion. I like to wear
something different.
How do you think people perceive you from the way you dress?
Y: They probably think I’m a bit more uptight than I actually am. I am a
complete and utter juvenile and don’t take many things seriously, so maybe I
make up for it in the way I dress?
A: I don’t think people would be able to tell I’m a model, which isn’t
a good thing!
If you could steal anyone’s wardrobe — past or present, fictional or real —
whose would it be and why?
Y: Cleopatra’s — I would have done anything to flirt in those marble
halls, having milk baths. I’ve been to the British Museum, I know what bling
was around back then and it is right up my street.
A: Brigitte Bardot as she’s so feminine and always draws me in.
If you could change one part of your body, which would it be?
Y: New knees. I’m not talking outside, I want new joints. And changeable
eye colour would be cool.
A: My feet, I’d make them numb so that they didn’t hurt in heels.
What are your five desert-island staples?
Y: The family, an endless subscription and delivery from Amazon,
moisturiser, tweezers and a mirror to use with them.
A: My iPod, a really good book, my best friend, a fluffy rug to snuggle
up on when it gets cold and Mummy’s moisturiser.
What is a day in the fashion life of Yasmin and Amber Le Bon?
Y: Every day is different. I’ll be functional and comfortable for a week,
and then, suddenly, like everyone, the fancy takes me and I’m someone else
altogether.
A: For a casting I wear tight clothes so that they can see my body. In
the evening I dress up with lots of dark eye make-up.
