Amy Winehouse designs 17-piece women's wear line for Fred Perry

Patrick Foster, Media Correspondent

The Fred Perry brand may be a British institution but its latest designer is known as something of a rebel: Amy Winehouse is to bring her edgy style to the classic clothes maker.

The singer has created a 17-piece women’s wear line for the company, to be released in the autumn. It is the first of four collections that she will design for the label. The range, which will be sold at Fred Perry stores and concessions such as Selfridges, includes polo shirts, jumper dresses and Harrington jackets.

Winehouse, 26, is the latest in a series of singers to sign collaborative deals with fashion brands. Lily Allen created a collection with New Look, and Beth Ditto, part of the American band Gossip, has signed a similar deal with Evans, the plus-sized women’s wear chain.

John Flynn, the managing director of Fred Perry, said: “We are excited that Amy is working with us on this quite unique project. We have had a great relationship with her over the years as she has been a loyal fan and supporter.”

The label said that Winehouse had been “very involved” in designing the clothes, which it said were mainly pink and black and included “dangerously short” pencil skirts and “punk-inspired” Capri pants. “Collars are most definitely raised and ready for action. And yet for every tomboy twist there’s a deeply feminine twirl,” a spokesman said. “It’s Amy all over — sharp, clever, sexy, lots of attitude — but stays true to the Perry aesthetic and unrivalled heritage.” Prices will range from £22 to £100 for a cropped trenchcoat.

The spokesman said: “We had three design meetings where she was involved in style selection and the application of fabric, colour and styling details. She is a loyal fan of classic Fred Perry products so her designs were focused on developing a recognisable, heritage-influenced Fred product.”

Winehouse, who has suffered from drug and alcohol addictions, is expected to release a new album this year. She said: “I’m really excited about this collection. We’ve been working on it for a while and it’s great to see it finally come to fruition.”

Perry, Britain’s most successful tennis player, founded the brand in 1952. Other musicians who have also designed for it include Paul Weller, Terry Hall, of the Specials, and the Blur singer Damon Albarn.Paris Fashion Week, pages 64, 65
